Yankees news for August 12 ------------------- Click here for full articles: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040812055310143 Sturtze So Good August 12 New York Post: If the Yankees were blind dates last night in Texas, they would have been described as having great personalities. In other words, they weren't pretty, failing to take full advantage of seven walks and having two batters hit in the first five innings. But thanks to a solid effort from spot starter Tanyon Sturtze and relievers Paul Quantrill, Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera, the visitors were effective enough to carve out a 4-2 victory in front of 43,729 at Ameriquest Field. The win halted a two-game losing streak and kept the Yankees' 91/2-game AL East lead intact over the Red Sox, who crushed the Devil Rays, 14-4. After giving up two runs in the first inning Sturtze blanked the Rangers in the next four and left after five with a 3-2 lead. Starting for the first time since July 24 at Boston when he bruised the right pinky in a brawl, Sturtze gave up five hits and two runs. He was hit with a three-game suspension but hasn't had his appeal heard yet. He is 4-2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Giambi talking but saying little August 12 New York Daily News: Jason Giambi didn't offer much new information about his health yesterday, but the Yankee first baseman did issue an emphatic response to questions about whether his season-long illness is connected to steroid use. "This is absolutely not related to steroids at all," Giambi said, "and that's all I can really say about that." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sheffield puts hurt on Texas August 12 New York Daily News: SOME DAYS, Gary Sheffield can take one of his vicious swings, and there are no jolts of pain in his left shoulder. Other days, he checks his swing and feels "like somebody shot me," Sheffield said. All that pain has Sheffield reevaluating his career. He says he does not want to go through another season like this one. The bursitis in his shoulder prevents him from lifting his arm straight up and he is considering getting a cortisone shot when the Yankees return from their nine-game road trip on Aug. 20. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moose answers call in Columbus August 12 New York Daily News: The Yankees should have some more answers about their vulnerable starting rotation today after Mike Mussina threw three scoreless innings last night in a rehab start for Triple-A Columbus. Mussina, on the disabled list since July 16 with a stiff right elbow, allowed only two hits to Indianapolis, a Reds farm club. He struck out five and did not issue a walk, throwing 46 pitches. If Mussina feels okay today, the Yankees could begin to piece together their fragmented starting five. "Everything was good," Joe Torre said. "I'm anxious to talk to him. We have to see how he came out of it. Forty-six pitches, that's a good test." Mussina could start Tuesday in Minnesota, but he may pitch a simulated game, too. Mussina will join the Yankees in Seattle this weekend. Javier Vazquez missed his start last night because of pinkeye and won't pitch until at least Tuesday or Wednesday. He is slated to throw a simulated game in New York today. "I'm glad he feels well enough to do that stuff," Torre said. But the manager also added that Vazquez is "shut down from being around people" because the pinkeye is contagious. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Struggling Pettitte Back In City August 12 Hartford Courant: The past three days Andy Pettitte woke up in a hotel room in midtown Manhattan, a portion of the city into which he seldom ventured when playing for the Yankees.Pettitte and his family preferred the suburbs and avoided the crowded sidewalks of the Big Apple except for those sojourns down the Canyon of Heroes for four World Series victory parades. "This is definitely strange," Pettitte said at Shea Stadium where he is scheduled to start today against the Mets in his first game in the city since he was outdueled by the Marlins' Josh Beckett in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series at Yankee Stadium. "I didn't use to spend a lot of time in the city, and now I'm with the team in the hotel. It feels weird." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday's scouting report August 12 Dallas Morning News: RHP Orlando Hernandez (4-0, 2.25 ERA): El Duque is 2-0 in his last three starts and appears to have recovered from a hamstring problem that forced him from a July 27 start against Toronto after two innings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yankees at Rangers August 12 Fort Worth Star-Telegram: Right-hander Scott Erickson opposes Yankees right-hander Orlando Hernandez. Erickson is making his second start for the Rangers, having allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings in a 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. ------------------- Click here for full articles: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040812055310143 |
