Griffey to miss rest of season with torn hamstring

By TERRY KINNEY, Associated Press Writer
August 11, 2004

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Ken Griffey Jr. will miss the rest of the season because of a torn right hamstring, the latest setback in a long line of injuries for the All-Star outfielder.

Griffey will have surgery Monday, the Cincinnati Reds said. Team medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek said Wednesday that an MRI exam showed Griffey had ruptured his hamstring last week in San Francisco.

Griffey, who hit his 500th career home run earlier this season, could be fully rehabbed in time for spring training, Kremchek said.

The Reds said Griffey was hurt while making a sliding catch in right field last Wednesday. Griffey had moved over from his usual spot in center field for the game, his first action in nearly four weeks since tearing his hamstring.

``He had a complete rupture of the hamstring off the bone,'' Kremchek said. ``He knew it wasn't right, and that's why he hadn't really played since he injured it in San Francisco.''

``He didn't come back earlier because I think he was hoping he would be able to get over this and pinch-hit or he'd be able to do something to help the team,'' he said.

The new injury was similar to one Griffey had on his left side three years ago. But that one was a partial tear that healed without surgery, Kremchek said.

I think it's ok to post AP articles, since they don't belong to certain newspaper. They are just "out there"...floating around.

More breaking news: Dentists have discovered that Julia Roberts has 18 more teeth than the average human being.

Ken Griffey Jr. will never be healthy again. Even when he had gotten off to the good start, most of us knew that he would eventually go down. I was rooting for him. But.....tough luck, nigga. :dunno:

First thing he needs to do is move to an AL Team and become a DH. I'm sure that will happen in the offseason. Hell, if Bernie was to retire I'd take a flyer on him. He has a good contract and I'm sure the Reds would even be willing to eat a portion of it, although if they traded him to the Yanks I'm sure they'd expect us to big up the whole salary. Move to the AL Junior, it will be the best thing for ya. :peace:

That's chump change compared to some of our contracts. :please: I'd give him a shot, especially with that shot being at DH if he's willing to take it. Like I said though, I would also demand the Reds pick up a little bit of it, which if dealing with us I'm sure they wouldn't do. I'd take on Junior in a NY minute, but not to replace my boy Bernie at DH with Beltran in CF. Bernie would have to retire... :peace:

$12.5 million a year over the next 4 years of his playing career, of which the past 4-5 years has been a waste, with a $4 million buyout for the 5th year, plus $12 million of deferred payments from 2009 through 2024 from previous years' salaries is not chump change. That might be reasonable for the old Griffey, Jr., but there is no way to know that even as a DH he could recapture the old magic. The guy will be 35 years old next season and 38 at the end of the deal, assuming 2009 at age 39 would be bought out. Even this year, when healthy, Junior wasn't hitting for average. He seems to have become a one dimensional power hitter, when healthy. When not healthy, he is a complete waste of money.

That's a lot to take a shot that could easily backfire. Let Cincy be stuck with him as he continues to break down. Let Seattle think they could capture the old magic. Let anyone take the chance, other than the Yankees. The Yankees are nuts if they take another guy on that has a serious injury history and makes big money. People are upset that Bernie makes $12 million this year, but at least he contributed to 4 titles and 6 pennants FOR THE YANKEES. If the Yankees were to acquire Junior, they'd be paying a shell of his former self that much money without having ever gotten any benefit out of him in the past.

Plus, does this team really need ANOTHER DH? People are kidding themselves if they think the Yankees' own walking injury, Jason Giambi, will be able to play first base for the better part of the next 4-5 years (probably 4, assuming they buy him out of his contract before the 2009 season for $5 million). I say this all the time. DH needs to be reserved for Giambi after Bernie is out of the picture.

This is all before I mention that the guy does not deserve to be a Yankee after vowing never to play for them just because Billy Martin, who has long since died, yelled at him in the clubhouse as a kid when his dad was here.

I'd do it, we're talking a DH here, and I think getting out of Cincy and staying out of the field will help him a lot. Cincy will give him up for a 6 pack of Busch at this point and George is always willing to take on money. And yes this is chump change, we're talking George here. He'll gamble with his money, and if he can bring in someone of Junior's caliber to DH, I'm sure he'll do it and I know I would. You've seen the flashes this year when he's healthy. I'm willing to gamble and bet that him being a full time DH will serve great therapy to that hammy. With that being said, it's up to Junior and it's up to the Reds. Our they willing to swallow some money??? Well they better be and I'm sure they would, they want him out of there even more then he wants out of that city. This is all a moot point though, I don't see Bernie retiring next year which means we have no void at DH. And actually with Giambi around under that contract we have no void at DH x 2. :serious:

Why would Giambi agree to go to Cincy??

Why would the Reds want Giambi who makes billions when they have Casey!?

Stupid trade, Amit! You should be ashamed of yourself. :nono:
