COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- New York Yankees right-hander Mike Mussina pitched three scoreless innings Wednesday night in a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Columbus.

Mussina, who went on the disabled list July 6 because of a stiff right elbow, allowed two hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter while throwing 46 pitches -- 29 strikes.

He gave up singles to Indianapolis' Luis Figueroa in the second and Brandon Gemoll in the third, then was replaced as planned to start the fourth.

New York manager Joe Torre has said he wanted Mussina to make at least one start in the minors before rejoining the Yankees' rotation. Mussina has had a disappointing season, going 9-6 with a 5.20 ERA in 18 starts.

It took him 46 pitches to get through 3 innings against minor leaguers. :serious:

When you strike out 5 guys in 3 innings, you throw a lot of pitches!

Who told him to strike guys out? We need quality innings and legnth, not stat padding strikeouts. Besides, Randy Johnson would strike out 5 in 3 innings on 35 pitches.

We don't need quality innings and length out of a re-hab start! As long as he got up to around 50 pitches, that's all that matters.

Exactly. The stats, including innings pitched, don't matter at all. It's getting in his pitches and coming away from it feeling healthy.

I was joking. I know its a rehab start and all you hope for is that he comes out healthy. Stats don't matter much because we know he can pitch, its just a matter of him being healthy.

I'm gonna be saying this for the atleast the 4th time:

I'm not an idiot. Some people will argue that, but I'm not. If I say something that sounds too ridiculous, I'm joking. Just like the "Leo Mazzone would have made Sturtze into a 15 game winner," was a joke. Come on people, get with the program.
