Crash Costs Glavine 2 Teeth And Next Start

Quote:

Mets pitcher Tom Glavine, the former Massachusetts high school hockey star, lost his two front teeth and split open his lower lip yesterday.

He did not absorb the blow in an athletic endeavor, but in a taxicab, during a ride that usually lasts about 10 minutes.

The Mets beat the Houston Astros, 7-3, at Shea Stadium last night, but Glavine's mishap is more of an indication of how it is going these days for the Mets, who have rapidly fallen out of the National League East race and appear headed for another sub-.500 finish.

Glavine was treated at N.Y.U. Medical Center in Manhattan and was expected to be released late last night, but the Mets said he would not be able to make his scheduled start tonight against the Astros.

But only Glavine was down two teeth. He had once been asked why he chose to pursue baseball instead of hockey.

"I had all my own teeth and I wanted to keep it that way," he said.

Then he joined the Mets.

Crash Decks Mets Ace

Quote:

The impact hurled Glavine face-first into the plexiglass partition, splitting his lip and knocking out both his front teeth.

"I ask him, 'Do you have any problems? Can I help you?'" said Kovalonoks. "He said, 'No, don't worry. We have to call police now.'"

The cabbie said he and the 38-year-old ace pulled out cell phones and called cops.

Kovalonoks said he realized he was driving a celebrity when several Port Authority Police cruisers arrived - and the cops went straight to Glavine.

"From what I understand, he is a very important man, but everybody forgot about me," said Kovalonoks, who couldn't get out of the cab because his door was jammed. Eventually, police came to his aid.

It was unclear whether Glavine was wearing a seat belt. Neither the cabbie nor the SUV driver was injured. No summons was issued, but police said they were investigating.

 What's even funnier is that people still don't care about what happened to him.

NYPD: Mr. Glavine, are you alright? Don't worry sir, we're gonna get you out.
Glavine: I lost some teeth and I've got a headache.
NYPD: Get an ambulance, NOW!
Kovalonoks: What about me? My head is bleeding and I can't feel my legs.
NYPD: Are you a millionaire? Are you a big leaguer?
Kovalonoks: No, I'm the cabby.
NYPD: Then shut the f*ck up and wait your turn.

Tommy does have bad luck. A week ago, all he wanted for Christmas was a "2-run lead", now he needs his 2 front teeth. :no1:
