It started in disaster, with Todd Zeile pitching in relief of a 19-10 beating. It ended in disaster, with Al Leiter suffering his worst loss of the season.

All in all, the Mets have had better road trips.

The Mets went away for 13 games in 14 days, and quite frankly, not much good happened. The rundown? Shane Spencer was arrested, then suspended, then released. Jose Reyes, Mike Piazza, Kaz Matsui and Vance Wilson all got hurt. The Mets made three controversial deals, acquiring two pitchers but trading three top prospects.

Despite their struggles, the Mets are certainly better than last year's last-place outfit (through 110 games, the 2004 Mets are 52-58, eight games ahead of 2003's pace). But with the team not going anywhere, could the Mets reverse course and sell off some of their veterans, assuming they clear waivers? Or, in Leiter's case, waive their 10-and-5 rights?

Odds are, nobody will go anywhere. And the way things are going, right now that includes the Mets.

Road to Nowhere

Very annoying article, but well-written and very true.
