Mets need to evaluate Howe

Assess Art Howe:

Some people want him fired, others think it's not his fault. The Mets need to find out once and for all. Just as they told Bobby Valentine to manage the last week of 2002 as if it were the World Series, the Mets need to use the final 52 games to decide whether Howe is the right man for them. If he is, give him full support. If not, pay him his remaining $4.7 million and put him out of his misery and then see if Lou Piniella can get out of his contract.

Howe has been given a decent chance to show what he can do, but for whatever reason it's not working yet, as 153 losses in less than two years have shown. And this is not to say that all the losing is his fault, just as it wasn't Valentine's fault in 2002. But so far, Howe has not made the team better than its constituent parts. Since 2003 it mostly underachieves. If he was given free rein to manage the team the way he wants, maybe it would be different. But Howe is micromanaged from the front office and does what he is told, so we'll never know. Piniella could stand up to the bosses when necessary, and get away with it.

The interesting thing about Howe is that he has no discernible base of support. With Valentine, half the fans loved him and half hated him, and the same went for the front office and the clubhouse. Even though many vehemently disliked him, he also had a strong foundation of support. For Howe, other than his greatest admirer, Piazza, he doesn't have any of that. It seems that if half the people don't like him, the other half just don't have an opinion.

Howe in New York might just have been a bad idea from the beginning because he never seemed comfortable with all the attendant non-baseball activities that go on here, especially with the Mets. Piniella would eat it all up and love every minute of it.

This was an interesting idea:

If Matsui can't -- or won't -- play second this year, then try to trade him to Seattle for Bret Boone:

Boone has a $9 million option for 2005 that vests with 51 more plate appearances. Seattle, which is owned by Japanese investors, wanted to move Boone's contract in the past, so maybe a deal that would put Matsui and Ichiro together could be worked out.
