DL Isn't Plan For Matsui

An industry source said Kris Benson's agent, Gregg Clifton, was in New York yesterday setting the groundwork with GM Jim Duquette for a new contract for the recently-acquired free agent-to-be right-hander.

The Mets are considered to have a very good chance to sign Benson, who will likely command a package in the three-year range. The pitcher spent his off-day yesterday searching for an apartment.

According to the Kansas City Star, Royals C Justin Huber, sent away by the Mets as part of the Benson trade, has an injured left knee, hurt just prior to the deal. KC GM Allard Baird said yesterday he's not sure what the diagnosis will be but was hoping to get an answer last night.

Baird did not want to speculate yet on potentially adding another player in the deal, believing he and Duquette can work out whatever needs to be worked out.
