"I'm going to tell you what I was quoted as saying in 2001 and I got made fun of by a lot of people," said Rodriguez, a former teammate of Olerud's. "He's the best player I ever played with."

Because Rodriguez played with Ken Griffey Jr., who was named to an all-century team and will most likely be a Hall of Famer, that was a mouthful. Olerud is a former batting champion with 2,145 hits and a .295 career batting average, but there are no plans to save any wall space for him in Cooperstown.

Rodriguez explained himself by saying that Olerud is never out of position and that he seems to produce pivotal hits. Rodriguez said he "gets goofy" when he talks about Olerud, and he was giddy as he discussed a minor transaction that he believes will be significant.

"I'm very excited because I know what he can do for any team," Rodriguez said. "He just completes our team."
