Sheff to tie, A-Rod to win
August 5
New York Daily News: Esteban Loaiza made his Yankees debut last night and got a quick taste of what life in pinstripes is all about. Gary Sheffield provided the first late-inning blast with a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth and Alex Rodriguez finished off a dramatic 8-6 win with a two-run shot of his own in the 11th.
While such rallies are becoming a bit of a ho-hum occurrence for the Yanks this season, Joe Torre said he believes A-Rod's dinger could be the catalyst for a surge from the third baseman. Torre likened it to Jason Giambi's extra-inning grand slam against Minnesota in 2002, though A-Rod said he thought he might have started a roll with his ninth-inning hit off Red Sox closer Keith Foulke two weekends ago at Fenway Park.
"That was the biggest hit of the season for me," Rodriguez said. "But this is right up there with the biggest hits I've had as a Yankee."

Mariano saves best for late-game jams
August 5
New York Daily News: Here's what qualifies as a shaky outing for Mariano Rivera: two innings pitched, three hits, two walks, one strikeout and zero runs.
That was Rivera's line last night, when he pitched the 10th and 11th innings in the Yankees' 8-6 come-from-behind win over the Oakland A's at the Stadium.
Rivera, who earned the win when Alex Rodriguez hit a game-ending two-run homer in the 11th, is now 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA. But it was anything but an ordinary outing for the usually dominant closer.
Rivera threw 51 pitches over the two innings, an enormously high number by any standard, especially his.

Comebacks pitch in to make difference
August 5
New York Daily News: In the end, maybe it won't matter that George Steinbrenner didn't get his man, Randy Johnson, or that Esteban Loaiza didn't look like an upgrade over Jose Contreras last night. Maybe all that matters is the Yankees lead the world in late-inning heroics, and, as always, they have Mariano Rivera in the bullpen.
Is that enough to win a championship, even with the most vulnerable starting rotation of the Joe Torre era? Strap the A's to a lie-detector test and let's see how they answer that after the Yankees beat them, 8-6, in 11 innings with still another remarkable comeback in a season already full of them.

Chavez & A's reach out to Giambi
August 5
New York Daily News: Eric Chavez is one of the lucky few who have been able to get in touch with Jason Giambi recently. Since being diagnosed with a benign tumor, the Yankees' first baseman has not been back to the Stadium and is apparently not returning calls.
But Chavez reached his former A's teammate by phone "a few days ago." Though Chavez did not reveal many details of the conversation, he did say that Giambi was unable to guarantee that he would be back on the field by the end of this season.
"He wasn't quite sure," Chavez said before last night's game at the Stadium.

Heredia sent to minors
August 5
New York Daily News: Felix Heredia finally ran out of chances. A night after struggling in a mop-up role, the lefty reliever was sent to Class-A Tampa so he can work with pitching guru Billy Connors.
