Astros Eyeing Baylor

Quote:

Don Baylor has agreed to wear many hats during this season, but at least they have all been for the Mets organization. It's likely he will be wearing a hat with a different team logo before 2004 is over.

Unless interim manager Phil Garner can turn the Astros (54-52) around and make the playoffs, Baylor could be the next Houston manager. According to two sources, Astros management is very interested.

"It's more than him being at the top of the list," one source said. "He is the top of the list."

The Mets seem aware of the possibility that they will lose the man who has served as bench coach and hitting instructor this season. General manager Jim Duquette said, "If the Astros end up looking for a new manager, I'd be astonished if (Baylor) isn't interviewed for it. You just keep hearing his name linked with that organization."

I don't have a problem with Baylor managing Houston, as long as they wait until the season is over.

I still want Wally Backman to be the next mets manager.
