Feck this guy...TC has earned his stripes..literally..why should this softlipped Mormom screwball walk into our lineup and just be given a job?? I'm no HUGE fan of TC ..he K's a lot and looks tired..but the same can be said about Olerud... |

Olerud doesn't K alot...he has about an equal walks to K ratio...his bat sure isn't what it used to be, but hopefully Donnie can work w/him on speeding it up a little bit...& he's a steady glove too & a good clubhouse presence...a pro's pro they say...i have no problem w/this signing...how could anyone object when you basically got this guy for nothing? if he doesn't work out, we are none worse for the wear, & Giambi may possibly return by the postseason...as a stopgap solution, i don't think we could have done much better unless we traded for Tino, in which case we would have had to give up a prospect or 2 considering how hard it is to deal w/Tampa Bay's ownership in trades. |

I agree with you on the K/BB ratio....well, its a fact. He still has a good batting eye and he knows how to hit, but the bat speed is gone. I don't think there's much a hitting coach can do to help that. Olerud is a veteran (looks older than he is) and looks like someone who would study "the art of hitting". If his problem had been making contact or laying off bad pitches, then I think Mattingly would be able to help. Unless Steinbrenner springs for the fountain of youth, I think his bat is still gonna be slow. But he is a good glove. Didn't he screw Mientkiewicz out of the Gold Glove last season? And even if he continues to hit .245, its still better than Clark's average. |

all i know is people were saying Sierra had lost his bat speed before he got here, & he's been doing a fine job off the bench & in pinch hit situations...i think Olerud could still get on base w/more regularity than Tony Clark, even though TC has more pop in his bat at this point...that's all we need out of our #8 & #9 hitters anyway...the big bats can drive them in from that point. |

Sierra's bat has slowed, but he's found a way to overcome that. Production is all that matters. Before coming here, Sierra was coming off a .275 season with pretty good power. He had gotten off to a great start and people were talking about, "He's an All Star candidate. It would be awkward with the whole Joe Torre situation." <--- Yeah, MM. In relation to Olerud, Sierra was producing. As I said, it doesn't matter how slow your bat is if you've found a way to combat that and be productive. John-O hasn't. I'm not against getting him, because he is an upgrade. I just don't expect much offensively out of him. As you said, he'd be a 8-9 hitter. |

as long as he got on base more often than TC, did a solid job hitting in situations (moving runners over, etc.) & fielded his position well, that would be fine by me. |
