Mike And Mets: Bubble's Bursts

Quote:

At a time when the Mets have needed Mike Piazza the most, he has given them nothing.

Piazza was hitting .318 five weeks ago. He has hit .141 since, with one home run and six RBI. He is just back from another injury, this one to his hand. There is at least a bit of symbolism in that. Piazza hasn't just hurt the Mets lately, he's killed them.

Piazza wasn't going to win the National League East for the Mets all by himself. No matter what he did, the Braves would still be in first place right now, continuing to be the surprise story of the whole season, even more than the Cardinals are. But if Piazza shows up at all in the month of July, the Mets aren't nine games out going into tonight's game against the Brewers.

He hasn't shown up, at a time when the Mets needed him to do that as much as they ever have. Shipping him up the line to first base was supposed to be the solution to everything.

The fault shouldn't fall on Piazza, it should fall on the Mets for thinking that he could still be the centerpiece of the mets offense.

Piazza does deserve some criticism and Timo is right, the Mets should have known that Piazza was on the decline and no longer able to carry an offense. Even if he was having an average season with the Mets (.309/35 HR/94 RBI) that's not enough to be the centerpiece of a good offense.

But Lupica is an overrated "I'm holier than thou" a-hole and if this thread turns into a "rip that rat" forum, I'm all for it.

both strider and timo make good points, piazza deserves to be bashed somewhat for the way he has played lately and shouldn't have been put in the position to carry the mets offense but lupica IMO went overboard with his comments, i mean that backpage headline is a little strong!!!

In all fairness to Lupica, I don't think he had anything to do with the headline. Last I heard, the headlines are left to "specialists" who are prone to going overboard.
