Mets' Peterson Pitches In

Quote:

Of course, Devil Rays GM Chuck LaMar indicated Kazmir will be in the big leagues in September, which wouldn't have occurred with the Mets. Kazmir conceivably could be in the D-Rays' rotation at some point next year.

Different strokes for different folks, Peterson replied. He countered by pointing to Jeremy Bonderman, whom Oakland shipped to Detroit in a deal that sent Jeff Weaver to the Bronx and Ted Lilly to the A's. Bonderman went 6-19 with a 5.56 ERA with the Tigers as a rookie in 2003, while Lilly "took us to the playoffs," Peterson said.

As for the short-lived build-from-within mantra?

"You go invest in several pieces of beachfront property and now someone comes in and, gee, you bought it for 100 grand, and they want to give you 500 grand for it," Peterson said. "You say, 'All right, let's turn it over and let's get another piece of property.' That is building from within. When people make trades, they don't make trades because someone doesn't want somebody. You make trades because people have needs. Our time frame right now is a little bit different than Tampa's."

A commonly held belief among those objecting to the Zambrano deal is that Kazmir could have been dealt for Alfonso Soriano in spring training. But Duquette called the notion "ridiculous." Could the Mets have gotten more than Zambrano? Perhaps. But Peterson said don't sell short Zambrano, who will debut Thursday in Milwaukee.

One thing that appears certain is Peterson will not hesitate to make changes he believes are necessary. Ricky Bottalico, one of Peterson's successful reclamation projects, threw his first bullpen session for the coach during spring training. What happened?

"[Peterson] switched everything," Bottalico said.

Peterson moved Bottalico over to the first-base side of the mound for a better angle on his delivery. As Bottalico notes, "It's where I am now." He's also toting a nifty 3.48 ERA.

"I think the biggest thing is gaining trust in a pitching coach," Bottalico said, "and [Peterson] earns that quickly."

Peterson also couldn't care less if some people don't like the trades.

"I'm not interested in what anybody thinks about the deals," he said. "When we go back to the research we all did as an organization with our scouts, with Jim, with our owners and the due diligence to make this acquisition, if there's something that we missed, I'd be very curious what it is."

Now it's up to Peterson to help Benson and Zambrano deliver.

in response to the part in bold wow what a slap in the face, lol i thought it was kind of funny but some met fans are going to be pissed cause of those comments!!!

It's fine if Peterson says that he can fix Zambrano in "10 minutes", but that just means that fans will have even less patience with him than they normally would.
