Knicks Offer Kurt In Deal For Dampier

Quote:

The Knicks may have improved their chances of acquiring Erick Dampier by offering Kurt Thomas in the proposed deal for the Warriors' free-agent center, according to a league source.

The Warriors were considering a sign-and-trade for Dampier that would have included the Knicks sending center Nazr Mohammed and forward/center Othella Harrington to Golden State. However, the Warriors last week acquired Portland center Dale Davis in a trade for Nick Van Exel.

As long as they dont trade KT for J-Craw. You should never trade big for small (ala Patrick Ewing essentially for Glen Rice). This deal would improve you at center and also let Sweetney start as vdfebduderocks pointed out

please, KT's a slightly above average PF...i'd give him up for Craw in half a heartbeat...that kid can be a star in this league.

I'd do this deal in a heartbeat. Sweetney can easily be a better player than Kurt Thomas if given the chance.

i forgot to mention that KT is 32 & has reached whatever "peak" he's ever going to reach...it's all down hill from here for that guy...& he's signed for the next 4 years? hell yes get rid of him for Jamal Crawford...the kid is only 23 & already putting up #'s comparable to Allan Houston last year...you could EASILY sign a bigman w/the MLE any year you want to that's just as good as KT, & alot younger...for example, i'd rather have Etan Thomas backing up Sweetney than KT taking minutes away from him.

That wasn't the problem with the Patrick Ewing trade. It's that there was a trade, period. He should have been forced to finish his last year on his contract and then walk away, so they wouldn't have taken on a 4 year deal for Rice, which became two of the worst contracts in NBA history in Shandon and Eisley.

This deal has to be done. We get stronger up the middle with Dampier. Thomas has been good for us, but his ceiling has been set.

*cough* Shawn Kemp! *cough* Raef LaFrentz! *cough* Vin Baker! *cough* :D

Shandon & Eisley got horrible deals, but none worse than Derek Fisher or Adonal Foyle just signed this year.

Yup, those were all bad deals as well. My main point is that the Knicks didn't need any of the contracts they picked up. They could have let Ewing walk. That was the smart move at the time, but the Dolans don't make moves based on what makes sense on the court.

Agreed, had they let Ewing go then they would have had 16 MILLION of the cap, instead that was the beginning of all their cap troubles. I hate the Dolans :fyou:

Exactly. Let Ewing walk. Don't max out Houston-- only offer him a little more than the other teams that could have fit him under their cap at the time (Detroit, and I think Chicago). I am not saying this after the fact. This is what I wanted all along. The Dolans and Layden ruined the Knicks. At least Isiah is able to make moves, ridding the team of Layden's trash, although he just caps them out more and more in the process. He's made them a more watchable, competitive team though.
