Hawks Don't Want Dampier

Quote:

The final barrier preventing the Knicks from acquiring Golden State's Erick Dampier could be lifted today, as Atlanta is expected to pass on making a substantial offer to the free-agent center -- or any offer at all, according to an Eastern Conference executive familiar with the Hawks' game plan.

The Hawks, the only team with abundant cap space left in this free-agent market, can offer Dampier more money than any other team, but they don't regard the 7-footer as a reliable building block, and are more likely to invest their bankroll in Memphis forward Stromile Swift.

That opens the door for the Knicks to complete a sign-and-trade acquisition with the Warriors for Dampier, though no agreement had been reached last night. The Knicks are offering Nazr Mohammed and Othella Harrington in the deal, which would enable them to pay Dampier $9 million in his first season.

Warriors GM Chris Mullin wouldn't tip his hand yesterday: "We talked to several other teams," he said, referring to Memphis and Indiana. "Nothing is imminent right now."

I think we ought to stop paying attention to what the newspapers say, and wait for the ESPN report to come out. You know how much needless drama the post has created? That's plain and simply a tabloid paper, and what's sad, is that most of us continue to listen to it. Fact is, Vescey and Berman don't know jack sh*t, and we listen to them anyway, as if they are the basketball Gods themselves. It's really sad, when you think of it.

I heard Vecsey once told the truth. Then again, maybe that was a lie too. :P
