Crawford Close

Quote:

Isiah Thomas got close to Kobe Bryant on Wednesday night, but the Knicks president moved closer to landing free agent combo guard Jamal Crawford in a multi-player sign-and-trade with the budget-conscious Bulls.

Thomas' one-hour meeting with Bryant at a location near Bryant's Newport Beach, Calif., home with owner James Dolan and Garden president Steve Mills in tow, was nice publicity, but better will occur if the Knicks add Crawford without losing Kurt Thomas in the transaction.

It looks as if it's not a matter of if, but when, Thomas will get Crawford. A Chicago newspaper reported the teams were close on a deal, saying it could be finalized by yesterday, but the Knicks and multiple sources denied that.

Knicks Try To Deal In Bull Market

Quote:

Jamal Crawford has neither the credentials nor the marketing appeal of Kobe Bryant. But Crawford is closer to joining the Knicks today than Bryant may ever be.

In the wake of Bryant meeting face-to-face with Madison Square Garden's three top executives on Wednesday in Newport Beach, Calif., the Knicks and Chicago Bulls continue to make progress on a multi-player deal that would send Crawford, a free-agent guard, to New York in a sign-and-trade.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas and Bulls GM John Paxson are still negotiating the players that would be included in a deal for Crawford, who would get a six-year contract worth approximately $60 million.

Thomas is expected to meet with Crawford over the next few days, according to Crawford's agent, Aaron Goodwin. "There has been progress," Goodwin said yesterday. "I think the Knicks are the front-runners right now."

I have to admit, I am not in love with this move at all if it happens.

I heard the rumor as TT and KT for JYD, Crawford, and E-Rob. Talk about going into cap hell. what happens to Houston? I'd be under assumption that we'd be paying him $18 million to be the 6th man of a very mediocre team and we'd be paying about $41 million for our backcourt alone.

And then who plays SF? E-Rob, Penny, Shandon, Dermarr? This move doesn't add up.

Then again that makes it all the move likely that the Knicks will do it.

I heard they might trade Shandon as well to get the junk players. I also heard about a 3 guard starting rotation like the old Detroit days with maybe Sweetney at PF and Mohammed at C. If H2O gets injured, then Dermarr or Ariza plays the 3

I was thinking about that. Having a 3-guard lineup like Memphis has a 3 forwards. But Crawford is only 6'4" and we'd have another Sprewell situation with him being out of position and undersized.

That's the problem. This deal would make more sense if the Knicks feel Houston will continue to miss time. That might be the case.

I'd be all for it if Crawford was signing for the MLE, but now that his asking price has risen, and it has to be a sign-and-trade, I am not 100% thrilled with it. I don't like having to take on Chicago's trash contracts.

It would be nice to move Shandon's absurd contract, but Eddie Robinson will be buried on the bench here. At least Junkyard Dog is a good rebounder. It's taking on 2 bad contracts to get rid of one bad one, while also giving them expiring contracts in Mutumbo and Othella.

Lets say Houston is healthy though. He's not going to be play the 3. He's bad enough at defense, imagine he had to guard a small forwards all the time? He'd still be the shooting guard. Lets say he plays 30 minutes a game. It would be a good idea to limit his minutes as he gets older and more brittle anyway. Marbury will play 40-42 minutes a game. That doesn't give Crawford many minutes. Is he going to be happy playing around 20 minutes a game? Crawford isn't going to play anything other than the 2 guard positions. I doubt he'd play the 3. If Houston gets hurt though, it'll be great to slide him in there and have some scoring punch.

We shall see. I don't love all of Isiah's moves, but at least he is able to make real moves, unlike that stiff Layden.
