I noticed a conversation between Yanks473 and BleacherCreature in another thread about me that took place while I was out of town. Since it's about me, I figured I'd address it. Here's a recap: 473:
BleacherCreature:
473:
rsjTerp23:
BleacherCreature summed me up pretty well. I was sitting on his back patio a week ago out in Arizona discussing this team with him, while also trying to convince him that it was a bad idea to drive drunk 360 miles to LA to catch the Yankees/Dodgers game, which was to start 10 hours later. Also, as Terp pointed out, he and I have explained that we are these types of fans to you for 3 years, 473. I'd like to clarify a few things. I have explained many times that I am 28, hence I was born in August 1975 and grew up in the 1980s. I was born a Yankee fan as a family tradition, but the only real things I remember from before 1982 are the Burger King 1978 Yankees poster I had in my room at my old house before moving in 1979 and my Dad going to the 1981 World Series. I remember a lot from 1982-1984 and everything from 1985 on. Sure, I had some nice teams to root for in the 1980s, but they never had the pitching to win it all, or even make the playoffs. However, as Creature pointed out, I was always an optimist. I looked for positives: 1. The nice 1-2-3-4 of Rickey Henderson, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, and Dave Winfield. 2. The young players coming up: Jay Buhner, Doug Drabek, Al Leiter, Roberto Kelly, Bam Bam Muelens etc, etc. Anyway, I knew those teams had no real shot, but I rooted my heart out. Everything since 1994 has been great, except for the strike. Sure, there have been disappointments, including Mattingly retiring without a ring, blowing the 2-0 lead to Seattle in the 1995 ALDS, and some other playoff losses. However, those other playoff losses are not the end of the world to me. The Yankees can't win every year. I am happy as long as they have a legit shot, which they have had every year since 1994. All that said, the part that 473 and others don't get about me is that I too get incredibly pissed off at trades, signings, and players' performances. Come on, do you guys not remember me being pissed off at moves like Boone for Claussen (still don't like the move despite Claussen's struggles and Boone's huge HR in Game 7), letting Pettitte walk (still don't like it despite it being the fault of both sides and Pettitte's injuries this year), signing Kenny Lofton, or the performances of guys like Juan Acevedo? Do you not remember me never being a Clemens fan, even though I rooted for him as hard as possible while he was here? I am not all rosey about the Yankees. Like Creature said, I don't like the baseless comments like "we have no shot in this series," "Jeter should be traded," or "Torre is clueless." Those are just pure silliness, a word I popularized on these boards. I was all for the Giambi signing, but do you guys really think I am happy with his performance this year? Come on, I thought the Yankees were getting the player he was in Oakland. Last year, I was willing to accept the injuries led to the dramatic downfall in batting average. I thought this year would be a bouceback season. I have no idea why he is so pull happy. I think the short RF porch is the most overrated thing in the world. You have to pull the ball right down the line to take advantage of the Yankee Stadium dimensions. The power alley is still deep, albeit not as deep as LF. He should be spraying the ball all over the field like he did in Oakland and how Mattingly wants him to do so now. I never liked the Contreras signing. That's one part that Creature was a little wrong on, but using it as an example of how I feel about a lot of players is still valid. I didn't like giving an unknown a huge deal that would be untradable if it doesn't work out. El Duque got 4 years, $6 million. That's a good risk. A 4 year, $32 million deal is a ridiculous risk. Hey, I hope the guy turns it around now that his family issues are resolved, but I am certainly not holding my breath. Michael Kay's comments, while hypocritical because he only says them on ESPN Radio and not YES, are pretty valid. I never liked this starting rotation. I liked the Vazquez deal, even though it meant giving up Nick Johnson. I don't like trading young, promising players, but when it is in exchange for a young pitcher, I am ok with it. I liked getting rid of Weaver for Brown, but I expected this. I expected injuries. I didn't think Brown would be an ace since I thought he would be hurt at times, but I thought he would pitch well when healthy. I looked at the trade as addition by subtration. I don't like Contreras, as I mentioned, never have. I wanted Pettitte back no matter what. I knew Sturtze sucks. OK, he saved the Yanks twice this year, but come on, he's always been awful. All pitchers pitch well once in awhile. Halsey looked bad today, but he's young, and shouldn't have even been in this situation yet. I'd like to hold onto him. Young lefty starters don't grow on trees. I'd do a Moyer trade if they can do it without giving up Navarro or any top prospects, or Halsey. I don't like his age and want the rotation younger, but he could help this year. I knew the lefty relievers were pretty bad, but I didn't get too upset because I don't think there are many good lefties out there. I mentioned Guardado LAST YEAR, well before the season ended. I wanted him, but he wanted to close (I think Seattle knew Sasaki was going to bail and head back to Japan). Rhodes is soft as tissue paper. Sure, he's better than Heredia is or White was, but he can't pitch in the clutch. He never has, going back to his days on Baltimore. BJ Ryan is not available. I'd rather go with no lefties than go for more crappy lefties. I want to develop young players, with low salaries, and sprinkle them in with veterans. I don't want a $200 million payroll, even though I know there is nothing wrong with it per the rules and I defend the Yankees' right to do so any chance I get. I want to surround guys like Jeter and A-Rod, who will be here at least 6 more years, with some younger, more hungry players, who will not just go for the HR. I want Navarro being groomed to take over for Jorge as Posada gets older, just like Jorge was with Girardi. I want Bubba in the mix as the 4th outfielder and to see him get some at bats. I know he's not great, but he's hungry and doesn't make much money. I want a team I could watch grow together with free agents and trades used to improve the team, not build the team like a fantasy baseball roster. Anyway, I know this is long and I know many people have a Strider "10-line rule," but funnily enough, I read Strider's long posts in their entirety and I hope those that question the kind of fan I am read this also. I am more than happy to answer any other questions anyone has for me concerning how I feel about this team, which I think is definitely good enough to win the AL East, maybe even good enough to make another run to the World Series, but probably not good enough to win it all. Fire away. |

OK, I'll let you know when my full manuscipt is complete. Face it, you're just jealous I can put together some coherent thoughts in paragraph form while you can't complete a full sentence without butchering it. If people don't want to read this, that's fine. 473 asked, and if he wants answers, he will read this, and ask follow-up questions. It's not my fault most of you have the attention span of a gnat. |

I totally agree with what Moo quoted. I don't wanna trade Navarro for Garcia, since it'll probably be a 3 month rental. I don't want an All-Star team or a $200 M payroll, especially when a lot of it goes towards hitters who don't come up big (Giambi, A-Rod). With the payroll we have, we shouldn't have Brad Halsey pitching, and we shouldn't have to look for lefties around the trade deadline. The pitching and the lefties should already be here. I don't like it when there's only 5 guys on the team who try to beat out grounders to SS (Jeter, A-Rod, Bernie, Bubba and Ruben.) Basically, I think that for the money spent on this team, it shouldn't have all those holes. |

lets just say with Matt23 and Terra lurking...makes it more interesting, and more likely ill stick around...when they left MSG I was looking to get banned...but my Mods not pricks like ED 473 and Kocur (although I secretly still believe that 1. they are all the same person or 2. share the same brain or 3. see 1 and 2) great post Matt |

Thanks. It looks long, but it's easy to read. It's amazing how much easier it is to read things when they're not in caps, ideas aren't separated by long stretches of periods (........................), and the ideas are thought out before hitting the submit button. That's why I read your long posts, Strider. I might not agree with everything, but you think before you type and write well. People like to say writing well doesn't matter on here, but those are people who don't realize teachers weren't telling you how to write to be pains in the asses. They were doing it so you could communicate with people in life.
Thanks Zero. I have also tried to bring some logical fans into the mix, like BleacherCreature. I was pissed when you were banned and once you were, EdO started his campaign to do the same to me. I never was though. I just stopped posting after awhile. |

I'm 50/50 on the Navarro for Garcia thing. We need starting pitching and like it or not, we're a "right now" team. Although I'd like to keep him, Navarro isn't gonna help us right now. Posada is signed until 2007, so we'd have some time to figure out what we're gonna do. I agree with you there. I'd like to see a more competitive league, but I don't have a problem with us having the huge payroll. I do hate the fact that George isn't getting his money's worth however. I agree 100% there. I did a persuasive essay on the Yankees' payroll and through my research, found that the combined salaries of the D'Rays, Brewers, and Pirates is less than half that of the Yankees'. At $184M, our nearest competitior is $63M behind. There is no reason why we should have this many glaring holes. Like I said the other day, its like spending $1M on a McClaren and finding out that it doesn't do over 100 mph. Its still a great car (we're leading the league in record), but for as much money spent, you shouldn't have a reason to complain. I have to disagree on the hustling. A-Rod doesn't bust it to first unless he thinks he can get a hit out of it. Bernie doesn't bust it down the line either. A lot of the time, he jogs halfway, then speeds up near the bag. |

473 cares since he asked BleacherCreature about me, and since I was out of town, I was unable to respond. If you don't care, that's fine. I don't give a sh*t about most of the stuff you post either. Posting coherent thoughts that you don't agree with is coma inducing? Are you still in that coma when you type your nonsense? Maybe that explains the caps, the made up words, the incomplete sentences, and the rants? Thanks, Timo. Even a Yankee fan can acknowledge a good post. Illiterate a-holes can't. |

Kocur dude.......what the hell? Why are you gonna attack Matt like that after he makes a post explaining his feelings on the Yankees? That's not cool.....I have had my disagreements with Matt (a lot of disagreements actually) but I'm not gonna come out and attack the guy for his post........ I didn't read the whole thing, but I read most of it and got the gist of what was trying to be said. He didn't deserve to be jumped on by anyone like that. |
