Pistons/Lakers Game 2; Major choke job

I can't even express how pissed off I am right now. The Pistons had that game. If they had only fouled Shaq when he touched the ball at the end of the 4th, he would have gone to the line for 2 shots, rather than Kobe hitting that 3 point shot to tie it. Then Kobe continued to go nuts in O/T and Detroit forgot to show up.

A Jordan-esque performance by Kobe in the 4th and OT.

A Jordan-esque performance by Kobe in the 4th and OT.

I have hated Kobe Bryant since the day he was drafted, but he is absolutely incredible. He's the closest thing to Jordan since Jordan, obviously. I don't think there will ever be another Michael Jordan, but Kobe is going to go down as a legend in his own right, as long as he stays out of jail. That was a Jordan-esque performance though, you are right.

I'm pretty pissed. The Pistons had that game and they gave it back. It's understandable, though. Facing the Lakers in the last minute is terrifying for other teams and the Pistons choked. Kobe was awesome, but it never should've gotten to that point.

I'm more convinced the Pistons are going to win this series after last night than I was after Game 1.

Don't forget, the Lakers were up by 11 at one point last night, and it was the Pistons who came back, on the road, to take the lead late.

Yeah, they blew it in the end, but going home with a split after winning Game 1 easily and playing a tight Game 2 is enough. You know the Palace is going to be rocking for Game 3, and Detroit won't miss so many open shots.

they do this every year guys...aren't you used to it by now? why do people still assume this team is beat when there's still time left on the clock? i've seen too many miracles that this team has pulled out of their stinky asses to think they are out of any game when there's still time left on the clock.

Lakers in 6, like i said at the beginning of the Playoffs.

I'm not saying the Lakers are beat, i'm saying I think the Pistons are the perfect team to beat LA if there is going to be a team to beat them.

The Lakers do not play defense, and the Pistons will make the Lakers work for everything they get. The Lakers also do not blow anybody out, their killer instinct is gone.

You know Rip Hamilton isn't going to play nearly as bad at home as he did in LA, and Kobe's going to have to guard him.

I like the Pistons to win 2 of 3 at home, and I like the series to go 7 games, and for whatever reason, I like the Pistons to win.

I usually assume the Lakers will win all of their series, but I root against it with all of my might. I agree with Terp, Detroit is the team with the best shot at knocking them off, and I am glad it is them in the Finals instead of a team like Jersey or Indiana.

I hear you, it is frustrating, but I will never give up hope. If only Detroit had drafted Melo. He could have been a big difference maker. This is not being said in hindsight. I thought they were nuts to pass him up the night of the Draft.

so was i, but you knew they were taking Darko from all the hype that was going around about him...he was supposed to be a young Sabonis...so far he looks like a young Chris Dudley. :P

i'm sure he'll get better though, but i don't know if they'll ever not regret the decision to take him over Melo though.

Yeah, Darko will improve and get PT, but Melo was an instant impact maker. Detroit had a really good team and the #2 pick. They should have taken advantage of that and gone for it all. The weird thing is that it's not like they went with an 18 year old over a 22 year old college graduate. Melo was 19 and was ready to produce immediately. I guess Dumars has a plan, but I would have gone for the sure thing, the guy who had just led his young college team to a national championship as a freshman.

The NBA is such that you ALWAYS draft the best available player.

This isn't the NFL where the rosters are huge and you draft for what you need.

Melo was the pick for Detroit, and unless Darko turns into a 25 pt, 10 Reb force, it will be a failure.

This is the thing. There are a few things that killed the Pistons. Derek Fisher was left wide open several times and he hit them all. We were slow to rotate towards him. When you play the Lakers, you have to charge at those 3 point shooters, like they killed your mother. That's how good their shooters are during the playoffs.

And the announcers were right on the money last night. Rip Hamilton did not guard Kobe well, on that 3 point shot. I noticed that Kobe seems to move rather well, and got the shot off pretty easily. He put a hand up and stayed in front of him, but there wasn't much pressure. Kobe pretty much got all the space he needed with that crossover move, and Rip let him do that.

But like Bip says all the time, there are a million things that lead to the outcome. Not just one play at the end. How about Rip shooting like shyat in the first half? Ben Wallace missing free throws?

and they take advantage of their opponents mistakes. But great teams and players learn from their mistakes. What the Pistons did in OT, was that they freaking settled for the long Bomb Js for just about the whole period. It pissed the hell out of me.

the Yankees did this to teams too over their reign of championship years...they took advantage of the opponent's overconfidence & pulled out some miracle wins where everyone thought they were sure to lose.

this is nothing new...great teams just get the job done.

The only thing I'm convinced of at this point is that the series will go 7. The Lakers upped the defensive pressure last night, but you've seen throughout these playoffs that the Lakers lack that killer instinct. They'll probably mail one game in in Detroit, play hard in another, and a third will be up for grabs. It's up to Detroit to grab that third game and take the 3-2 lead back to L.A.

As far as the Kobe shot last night, Hamilton's defense was as good as you could possibly hope for. The problem is that Kobe can get his shot whenever he wants. There's no arguing this. I'd be terrified if the Knicks were up 3 and Kobe was left with a contested 42-footer. He's that type of player. Larry Brown likes to play much like Riley and Van Gundy where he won't double and triple team stars on a regular basis, so that the supporting cast can just sit back and hit shots that high schoolers can hit. I don't mind that strategy, but last night they had to either foul Shaq quickly, or take a chance at wrapping Kobe up before he made his move and attempted his three. Yes, it's risky as you're leaving it up to the refs to decide if there's continuation, but Kobe is that type of player where you'd almost rather him on the line for 3 than attempting a 30-footer. You just knew that shot was going down. Or else run a big man at him and force him to move the rock. Problem there is that he has great court vision and he had the ball in the middle of the court, making him hard to double team where he can't just dribble around a vulnerable big man and either set someone else up for three or still get a quality three off himself. In either case, Detroit missed some free throws late which added to their demise. Even f'n Shaq drained his and-one to cut into the lead late.

I want to see a healthy dose of R. Wallace next ballgame, much like that one stretch in the fourth where Detroit sustained some offensive firepower. Malone can't guard him, and if they double he'll find open guys. He held up his end of the bargain when he was with Portland, while guys like Scottie Pippen wilted. I say ride him and let everything come from the adjustments made. I know he's injured, but if he can stay out of foul trouble, Detroit would be in good shape.
