I saw OneByOne is back (welcome back), so I wanted to bump up this thread.

Matsui is a very good hitter, but consistent is the last word I would use to describe him. He's either super hot or goes into slumps. At the end of the year, his numbers will be great, but he's not a consistent hitter. He's very streaky.

Thanks Mattingly. It was a long, long flight home and back. My father doesn't have too many days left, but we had a chance to watch the Yankees on my sister's big screen. We reflected about those games he took me too during the early 60's. As you know, my trip home did turn the Yankees around (lol) and as soon as I left they fell asleep against the Mets....

Sorry about your Dad, Dave. Glad to have you back though.

Thanks everyone. You know he just got out of the hospital for a short stay and the first thing that really iritated him was the fact that the Yankees lost to the Mets.

Getting on base 5 out of 5 times today it is no wonder that Hideki is over .400 on base perct., and inched his BA over .300. He is also the Yankee leader in runs scored with 31.

This post was six weeks ago and low and behold, Matsui is batting .303 and on base percentage at .400. Way to go Hideki.

Yeah, he is very good over the course of a season, but he is not consistent! He is streaky as hell!

Oh I see what you mean. He's better and better each and every year.

Well yes, he has improved this year, but that's not what I was saying. I was saying that over the course of a season (at least the 1.5+ seasons as a Yankee), Matsui has major peaks and valleys. There are a couple of weeks at a time where he just goes nuts, getting on base all the time, driving the ball, and driving runs in. Then there will be a couple of weeks where he is just awful, during which he grounds out to second non-stop, and his batting average plummets. I accept that as normal hot streaks and slumps that players have. However, that is not consistent. You've used the word consistent many times to describe Matsui. I am agreeing with you that he is a very good hitter, but I consider him to be more streaky (both good and bad) than consistent.
