Getting on base 5 out of 5 times today it is no wonder that Hideki is over .400 on base perct., and inched his BA over .300. He is also the Yankee leader in runs scored with 31.

Although he hasn't hit the kind of Home Runs he was supposed to, Matsui has been an excellent player from all other aspects..........

Actually didn't Torre say last year that they didn't expect him to hit that many home runs

I walk loudly and carry an even bigger stick!

You can't say he was "supposed" to hit more homeruns. Last season in ST, Joe said that he doesn't expect him to be a slugger, more a linedrive doubles hitter. We know what we have in him. A solid hitter and fielder, a fundamentally sound player, and a clutch hitter. You can't expect much more than .290/20 HR/105 RBI from him. But we'd all gladly take that.

So far he's been on base 9 for 9 in last two games. Scored 3 more runs

My eyes are open. In fact, I consider Matsui to be more of a streaky hitter, both good and bad, than consistent. His numbers will be there at the end, but like many hitters, he goes through hot and cold streaks. He's super hot right now!

Well I'm not surprised. In Japanese baseball he consistently hit over .300. All players have bad streaks, but few can pull themselves out of it. There are players and then there are baseball players.

I didn't really pay that close attention to his hot and cold streaks, but would you say it is like Bernie in years past in terms of streaks?

Talking about Bernie, he got 11 straight hits in terms of Ab's two years ago. Is Matsui anywhere close to the record? What is he 6 for 6 so far? I think the record is 12 straight, right? I know Bernie missed it by one.

What I really like about Matsui this year is that he seems more relax with his pitch selection than last year. Thus, making it easier for him to hit the ball with authourity this year.

I think Matsui will hit 25-30 this year, but I don't think there is any chance of 50!

Matsui would be a #2 hitter on most clubs. No doubt. We just have the luxury of him batting 6th 7th and 8th

With everyone else starting to get in a groove, and the highlights being Jeter's slump and Sheff not hitting HR, Matsui has definitely pulled through bigtime without the media all over him compared to the rest of the guys.

I don't think that he'd be a #2 hitter. Most 2-hole hitters are either fast runners or slap hitters. Matsui hits into too many double-plays to bat him there. I think in mostt lineups, he's probably a #3-5 hitter.

I saw OneByOne is back (welcome back), so I wanted to bump up this thread.

Matsui is a very good hitter, but consistent is the last word I would use to describe him. He's either super hot or goes into slumps. At the end of the year, his numbers will be great, but he's not a consistent hitter. He's very streaky.

Thanks Mattingly. It was a long, long flight home and back. My father doesn't have too many days left, but we had a chance to watch the Yankees on my sister's big screen. We reflected about those games he took me too during the early 60's. As you know, my trip home did turn the Yankees around (lol) and as soon as I left they fell asleep against the Mets....

Me too. Sorry to hear about your dad. I assume that he's lived a good and long life, you can take some solace in that.
