Then Torre admitted that May 9 in Seattle he broached the idea of giving Jeter a day off with hitting coach Don Mattingly but Mattingly pointed to the next day being an off day and suggested Torre stick with Jeter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeter homer helps Yanks win May 21 New York Daily News: For several days, Derek Jeter has felt he was close to breaking out of the slump that has consumed his season. Before a recent game he was lamenting that several hits had been taken away from him by spectacular plays. One of those hits, he reasoned, could have started a streak that would make everyone forget 0-for-17, the latest incarnation of his slide. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A-Rod back to hear boos May 21 New York Daily News:Angry fans threw fake money at Alex Rodriguez from the stands when he returned to Seattle, his first baseball home, three years ago. In Boston, where they hate him because he went to the Yankees, they not only booed him for four straight days last month but gave him a one-finger salute as he ate in a restaurant there. Now what? Tonight A-Rod returns to Texas, where he became the $252 million man and put up great numbers for three years, but left via trade over the winter after what amounted to a failed attempt to make the Rangers a winner. He never publicly asked out, and in the end, the Rangers felt they needed to trade his contract to give themselves a better chance to win. Yet the perception among fans, and to some extent people around the ballclub, is that A-Rod forced his way out of town. So even though the Rangers have enjoyed surprising success so far this year, there is plenty of anti-A-Rod sentiment here. How much? A sellout crowd tonight will let everyone know. "I hope our people don't boo Alex," Rangers manager Buck Showalter was saying in his office four hours before last night's 6-3 win over the Royals. "He deserves better than that." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Texas not missing MVP May 21 New York Daily News: Since being stung by the savage reception he got when he returned to Seattle after signing the richest contract in baseball history, Alex Rodriguez says he no longer predicts how fans will react. Besides, he says, he hasn't really thought much about his return to Texas, where he became an MVP but failed to get out of last place. But when the Yankees' new third baseman met a group of reporters recently to discuss his impending return, it was easy to sense that he expects to be booed when he suits up against his old team tonight. He also seems to have less of an emotional attachment to Texas, where he had three incredible seasons for three bad teams, than to Seattle, where he started his career as an 18-year-old. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason back to DH role May 21 New York Daily News:Jason Giambi was back in the lineup for the second straight night as the Yankees' designated hitter last night, with Tony Clark at first base again while Kenny Lofton and Ruben Sierra sat. Joe Torre said Giambi's back, which had knocked him out of two games, was slightly stiff, so he didn't want to try Giambi at first base. Having Clark at first has been a defensive advantage for the Yankees, thanks largely to his 6-7, 245-pound frame that allows him to stretch for balls Giambi might not be able to reach. Clark also provided an advantage with the bat last night, going 1-for-4 while Giambi failed to reach in four trips. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeter's HR Helps Moose Top Halos May 21 New York Post: Mattingly's faith was rewarded momentarily when Jeter hit a two-run homer but he wasn't able to build off that blast until last night. That's when Jeter delivered a two-run homer off Bartolo Colon and a broken-bat single that led to a run as the Yankees defeated the Angels, 6-2, in front of 43,810 at Angel Stadium. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeter Gets Offense Into Gear in Yankees' Victory May 21 New York Times: Unless he is counting his championship rings, Derek Jeter has little use for numbers. Mention a statistic near him, and expect to get a sniff, sneer or scoff in return. ``It's more of a feel, as opposed to results,'' Jeter said before the game. ``You want to take the feel from last night and keep it over a long period of time.'' To Jeter, there are too many variables to trust numbers. He was hitting .187 coming into the Yankees' game Thursday night, but he felt like .400. Jeter had taken several good at-bats on Wednesday, but had no hits to back up his feeling. That changed on Thursday, when Jeter singled and homered in his first two at-bats, scoring the Yankees' first two runs in a 6-2 victory over the Anaheim Angels." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At Home, Mo Pitches In May 21 New York Post: As he closes in on 300 saves, Mariano Rivera is giving back to his native Panama. Rivera, with the support of the Yankees, has opened two Intel Computer Clubhouses at Fe y Alegria and La Parroquia de Fatima in Panama City. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Maintaining His Position Among Game's Best Relievers Is a Simple Matter for Rivera May 21 New York Times:There is, in Mariano Rivera, a certain wisdom, a wealth of knowledge and insight parceled quietly, with humility and confidence. Tom Gordon, the Yankees' new setup man, is two years older than Rivera and has more major league experience. Gordon once converted 54 saves in a row. Yet he sees Rivera as a shaman of pitching whose every word and action is another bit of sage advice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rodriguez Readies Himself to Mess With Texas May 21 New York Times: Alex Rodriguez will return Friday to the place he once thought would be his home for a decade, the place where he talked about winning six or seven championships with the Texas Rangers, and the place he was desperate to flee before his third season here was even finished. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Benedict A-Rod May 21 New York Post: Friday night, Rodriguez, swaddled in Yankee threads, returns to Texas, where many fans must feel like Benedict A-Rod is marching home. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A-Rod expects the boos of Texas to be upon him May 21 Newark Star-Ledger: Alex Rodriguez said he doesn't know what kind of reaction to expect when he returns to Texas tonight for the first time since the February trade that brought him to the Yankees. Well, maybe he does. CLICK HERE FOR FULL ARTICLES, then click 'READ MORE' under Yankees news for May 21: http://www.yankeemania.com |
