Giambi's HR Helps Lieber Top Halos
May 20
New York Post: Jason Giambi returned from a balky back and Jon Lieber continued to prove the Yankees were very wise to sign him when other teams shied away.
Giambi, who missed the previous two games due to back spasms, crushed a two-run homer and Lieber allowed two runs in seven- plus innings as the Yankees squeaked by the Angels, 4-2, in front of an Angel Stadium crowd of 43,742.
Teams may squawk about George Steinbrenner's spending habits but they love to see the Yankees in their building because it instantly becomes a cash register. Last night's gathering was the largest of the season for the Angels.

Giambi shift pays off in big way for Torre
May 20
Newark Star-Ledger: Jason Giambi made it back into the lineup last night, part of the way anyway. Listed as the first baseman when the Yankees' original lineup was posted, Giambi was shifted to the designated hitter spot after taking batting practice. Giambi, who couldn't get his back loose and was unable even to pinch hit in Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to the Angels, said he felt confident before taking batting practice that he would be in the lineup somewhere.
And he made a solid contribution to the Yankees' 4-2 victory over the Angels, delivering a home run and a double. "It's right there," he said. "It's just a question of not feeling it when I hit. ... It's close. I felt it a little bit (Tuesday) night and so we decided to pull the plug."
"I told him I had plenty of paper," said manager Joe Torre, who was ejected from last night's game in the sixth inning by umpire Tim Timmons for arguing a strike call.

Yankees' Patience in Lieber Pays Off One More Time
May 20
New York Times: The Yankees are not used to waiting. As an organization, instant gratification is more their style. But with Jon Lieber, it was different. The Yankees saw a potential bargain in Lieber, and they were willing to wait for the payoff.
After missing last season with an elbow injury and all of April with a strained groin muscle, Lieber is proving he was worth the Yankees' two-year, $3.5 million investment. He won for the third time in four starts Wednesday night, guiding the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Angels at Angel Stadium.

Derek hoping extra work will shake slump
May 20
New York Daily News: Derek Jeter was in a T-shirt and shorts on the field at Angel Stadium yesterday, hitting in a group with spare infielder Homer Bush. The two took swings for about 30 minutes, part of an early batting practice about 5-1/2 hours before game time.
Jeter was searching for something, anything, that would help him get out of the slump that has hurt his season so much. The Yankee captain is mired in a 1-for-26 slide, and is without a hit in his last 17 at-bats following last night's 0-for-3 against Anaheim. (He was also hit by a pitch and walked to force in a run.) He is 17 for his last 112 (.152) and is hitting .187 this year.
Jeter is trying not to hit so many grounders to the left side, which he calls a sure sign he's struggling. At least he has his confidence. Jeter has turned defiant about his three-tiered slump, which even Joe Torre believed he was out of twice before the shortstop relapsed.

Jeter has little to show for effort but victory
May 20
Newark Star-Ledger : The box score shows that Derek Jeter was 0-for-3 last night and is now 0-for-17 overall, with only one hit in his past 26 at-bats. But the Yankees shortstop and captain left Angels Stadium last night feeling awfully good about his evening.
Jeter hit the ball hard his first two times up, robbed of an extra-base hit by Anaheim center fielder Chone Figgins in the third. Later he was hit by a pitch and drew a key walk to drive in what proved to be the winning run in the Yankees' 4-2 victory over the Angels.

Jason Returns
May 20
New York Post: A batting practice in which Jason Giambi sent numerous balls over the right-field fence convinced him and Joe Torre that Giambi's muscle spasm problem in his back was improved to the point he could DH last night after missing the previous two games.

As Royals Fade, Trade Talk Swirls Around Beltran
May 20
New York Times : Carlos Beltran has not changed one aspect of his daily routine, even as speculation about where he might be continuing that routine intensifies. Beltran still analyzes videotapes of his at-bats, he still listens to his iPod to relax and he still spends hours trying to help the Kansas City Royals win.
He does not focus on whether he will be playing center field for the Royals next week, next month or after the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline. As someone whose name has surfaced in trade discussions for years, Beltran says he has conditioned himself to ignore everything about where he could eventually be relocated.
"For me, it's easy," Beltran said Wednesday before the Royals beat the Texas Rangers, 5-3. "Last year, I really allowed myself to deal with the trade rumors. I was traded to every ball club in the major leagues and I ended up with the Kansas City Royals."

Lieber & stroller a hit duo
May 20
New York Daily News: "It was another big night of pitching for Jon Lieber, however, and the righty gave the Yankees their third consecutive strong start in a 4-2 victory over the Angels last night in front of 43,742 at Angel Stadium."
