Yanks thrown out
May 19
New York Daily News: It was the kind of game the Yankees of the Joe Torre era have thrived on - tight, well-pitched, one or two moments deciding the outcome. The Angels, who entered the game with the majors' best record, grasped the moments to win, 1-0, last night. First, Jorge Posada, who was trying to score from second on a single, was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Vladimir Guerrero to end the ninth."

No Boone in future for Yanks
May 19
New York Daily News: Forget the tearful reunion with a clip of his momentous ALCS-winning homer playing on televisions in a press conference at the Stadium. The Yankees won't be re-signing playoff hero Aaron Boone to be their second baseman of the future, said a baseball official with knowledge of both the Yankees' and Boone's plans.

Extra Painful Loss
May 19
New York Post: Randy Johnson may or may not be a Yankee this summer. But even Johnson, who threw a perfect game last night for the Diamondbacks, couldn't have won had he been in pinstripes at Angel Stadium last night - because even the best hurler can't win without a run. Working against an injury-depleted Angel lineup, a sensational Yankee pitching effort was flushed when the Angels posted a 1-0 victory in 11 innings in front of 43,660.

Arm and Bat of Guerrero Beat Yanks in Anaheim
May 19
New York Times: Vladimir Guerrero is thriving with his new team, the Anaheim Angels, and he unleashed his laser of a right-field arm in the ninth inning. Guerrero pegged Jorge Posada at the plate to end the top of the ninth, and the Angels won it in the 11th, 1-0, on a single to deep right by Adam Riggs off Paul Quantrill.

Yankees Wear a blank expression
May 19
Newark Star-Ledger: While their pitching kept them closer than they had a right to be, the Yankees hitters -- minus Jason Giambi, whose back kept him out of the lineup for the second consecutive game -- made sure their effort was completely wasted. The Yankees kicked off their longest road trip of the season with a 1-0 loss in 11 innings to the Anaheim Angels. The Angels, who won their ninth consecutive home game and improved their record to 26-12, won it on Adam Riggs' bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 11th against Paul Quantrill (4-2), the third Yankees' pitcher of the night. It was the first hit of the season for Riggs, the former Lenape Valley High and County College of Morris star, who was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake City earlier in the day when the Angels placed Troy Glaus on the disabled list.

Contreras Rejoins Yankees, With All the Doubts Intact
May 19
New York Times: José Contreras will return to the Yankees' rotation on Saturday against the Texas Rangers, and when he does, he will try to answer several important questions.
They are the same old issues for Contreras - aggressiveness with his fastball, the ability to work out of jams, holding runners on base. But with a little more than two months before the July 31 trading deadline, the Yankees need to know what to shop for. If they cannot count on Contreras, they will seek pitching first.
"Pitching is going to make or break us, that's the bottom line," General Manager Brian Cashman said.
The Yankees optioned Contreras to Class AAA Columbus after a discouraging start in Oakland on May 4. He was 1-2 with a 9.47 earned run average in five starts, failing to complete four innings in three of them.

Contreras gets start in Texas
May 19
Newark Star-Ledger: Joe Torre admitted he was surprised, but not nearly as surprised as he was a season ago when Jose Contreras was shipped to Tampa, Fla., after the Yankees manager had told him he was headed for Triple-A Columbus. But, after just two starts for the Clippers, the Cuban-born right-hander will return to the Yankees rotation and start on Saturday in Texas.

Giambi's Resting His Back
May 19
New York Post: "Jason Giambi took batting practice and decided another day of rest was best for his balky back."
"I am going to take another day," Giambi said after a full BP in which he looked a bit tentative due to spasms in the left side of his back. "I feel it when I cut loose." Giambi had been hitting fourth in the original lineup, but after talking to hitting coach Don Mattingly, decided it was best to give it more rest.
"Back spasms are something Donnie had and he said it wasn't worth it," Giambi said. "I hope I am ready to go tomorrow."

Soriano bracing for Yankees
May 19
Dallas Morning News : "Alfonso Soriano didn't believe it when he heard he was traded to the Rangers for Alex Rodriguez this winter. And he can't believe he's about to play against his former teammates, the New York Yankees, a team he made clear Tuesday he still holds close to his heart."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soriano Is Home in the Heart of Texas
May 19
New York Times: Alfonso Soriano has a nice baseball home these days, just not the baseball home he ever wanted. Soriano once thought he would be a Yankee for life, the next link in the Don Mattingly to Bernie Williams to Derek Jeter chain. He had speed, power and style. He was a Yankee. But in the few days it took the Yankees to snag Alex Rodriguez from the Rangers for him last February, Soriano went from a franchise player for a storied franchise to a footnote for a rebuilding last-place team. He ambled away from the Yankees with all the anonymity of a substitute teacher.

Mattingly the Batting Expert Knows Back Injuries, Too
May 19
New York Times: Don Mattingly is more than the Yankees' hitting coach. When a player needs a second opinion on a back injury, Mattingly has painful experience to share. So when Jason Giambi was unsure about playing Tuesday, he consulted Mattingly, who had back problems for much of his career. Mattingly advised Giambi to take another day to rest, and Giambi was scratched from the lineup. He had been listed as the first baseman batting fourth against the Anaheim Angels.
