NEW YORK -- It was 1999, and Ruben Sierra was an outfielder with the Atlantic City Surf. One night he was on the phone with his 8-year-old son, and Ruben Angel Sierra Jr. asked why he couldn't watch dad play on TV anymore.

"I told him that he was going to watch me soon," Sierra said last week, recalling the phone call to Puerto Rico. "I was playing in a league where they don't put the games on TV, but he was going to watch me soon."

Sierra credits his son, who is now 13, with inspiring him to get out of the Atlantic League and back into the majors, where he is enjoying a revival with the Yankees at age 38. The Yankees are one of a few teams a younger, less mature Sierra left in disgrace earlier in his career, and the fact he is batting .308 with 17 RBI in 25 games as a part-time player for them this season illustrates the extent of his turnaround.

"I'm very happy for Ruben," said manager Joe Torre, who once called Sierra the toughest player he'd ever had to manage. "Here's a guy who hit bottom and bounced back up."

Last week, with Giambi and Posada out of the lineup, Torre put Sierra in the cleanup spot. Sierra told the YES Network's Suzyn Waldman that he preferred to bat lower in the batting order. Waldman relayed that to Torre, who smiled.

"He has changed," Torre said. "He really has changed."

I'm very happy to have been wrong about Sierra. Hopefully he can be a good influence on Kenny "I'll even take out the garbage" Lofton. Kudos to Sierra for turning his life around.
