Yankees news for May 18 CLICK HERE FOR FULL ARTICLES: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040518063024502 Jose to grab Sturtze's start May 18 New York Daily News: A few days ago, neither Joe Torre nor GM Brian Cashman seemed to think two starts at Triple-A Columbus were going to be enough for Jose Contreras to fix his problems with his confidence and command. But the Cuban righthander is returning to the Yankees after impressing team officials Sunday by recording 12 strikeouts and allowing four hits and two runs in seven innings in his second outing. "Contreras will rejoin the Yanks on their current road trip, two team officials said yesterday, and probably be slotted into the rotation on Saturday against the Rangers in a game that the Yankees had been planning to start newly acquired Tanyon Sturtze." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Angels, Yankees Get Infusion of Intensity May 18 Los Angeles Times: "Angel shortstop David Eckstein could sense something different the moment he stepped onto the Yankee Stadium field Thursday. There's always a little more excitement, a little more intensity, a little more buzz in New York, but this seemed to go above and beyond the call of a typical Angel-Yankee game." "You could tell right from the beginning that the fans were into it very early," Eckstein said. "It seems like things were a little more on edge. You can definitely tell there's something there when you step onto the field." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bernie's bat gets in swing May 18 New York Daily News: "A few weeks ago, after Bernie Williams started crushing balls in batting practice, Joe Torre and hitting coach Don Mattingly believed the struggling outfielder would use a road trip to Oakland and Seattle as a way to forget his poor start." Williams' career has been marked by hot streaks, so it was an easy concept to believe, but this tear took an extra week to bloom. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agent: Garcia 'Being Honest' About Trade Rumors May 18 Seattle Times: "Mariners pitcher Freddy Garcia is not angling for a trade to the New York Yankees. However, if he is shipped out at some point before the July 31 deadline, why not to the 26-time world champions?"Garcia ignited a fuse over the weekend in New York during a Spanish-language radio interview. Armando Tallavara, the sports anchor for WADO, asked Garcia how he'd feel about a trade to the Yankees. "I'd love it," he said. "It would make my day." Garcia's agent, Peter Greenberg, who was with him in New York for the series, said yesterday that Garcia "was just being honest." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeter taking mood swings May 18 New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica: "Now it is the middle of May and it is Jeter, the captain of the team, who acts as if he has something to prove. It is Jeter who plays like the new kid in town. Rodriguez? He is starting to come on now." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jose Close To Call-Up May 18 New York Post: Billy Connors reportedly thinks Jose Contreras is ready to be recalled from Triple-A, and a decision on the Cuban righty is expected within the next 24 hours. In his second start for Columbus, Contreras on Sunday allowed four hits and two earned runs against Buffalo while whiffing 12. Contreras is currently with the Clippers in Indianapolis, but possibly not for long. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yankees Are Taking a More Daring Path on the Bases May 18 New York Times: "Luis Sojo took over for Willie Randolph in the Yankees' third-base coaching box this season, but the team might have saved a little money by simply installing an E-ZPass scanner. After all, a familiar Yankees sight this season has been Sojo waving runners home with a left arm that looks like a propeller on a World War II bomber.""I want to be aggressive the whole time,'' said Sojo, who has not been acting on his own. With encouragement from Manager Joe Torre, the Yankees, who open a 12-game trip tonight against the Anaheim Angels have been more daring on the basepaths this season. They have hit 47 home runs in 37 games, putting them on a pace to hit 206 home runs for the season, slightly less than last season's total of 230. But Torre wants his team to be able to win games without needing to smash home runs. So they run. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Importance of a Closer Isn't Open to Debate May 18 New York Times columnist Murray Chass: "THE Houston Astros were winning the gamble in which they traded their established closer, Billy Wagner, and anointed Octavio Dotel as his successor. They were in first place, three games ahead of the Chicago Cubs, and looking good. Then came a stretch of four games, from last Thursday through Sunday, and suddenly they are tied with the Cubs. They lost three of those games, two because Dotel failed to hold a ninth-inning lead." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finding His Place May 18 New York Post: "Javier Vazquez has struggled with his location this season, but not the location of his new job. 'This is my home,' he said Sunday morning, gesturing inside the Yankee Stadium clubhouse." CLICK HERE FOR FULL ARTICLES: http://www.baseballfans.net/yankees/articl...040518063024502 |

So this outs Sturtze is the bullpen I'd assume. I know Vinnie loves it, I sure do love hearing that Fredy Garcia article you posted "I'd love it," he said. "It would make my day." Garcia's agent, Peter Greenberg, who was with him in New York for the series, said yesterday that Garcia "was just being honest." :D |

I was looking foward to my boy Sturtze getting a shot at starting Saturday. However, I am excited to see what Jose C can bring to the table. As far as Freddy goes, I can't wait! Just hearing him make those comments gets me all hyped up for him possibly coming to the Bronx soon. Good article by Lupica on Jeter as well.... |
