He had allowed just one run, but had let the tying run reach base in the eighth inning. That, rather than a one-mistake day in which he mostly dominated the Mariners, was the only thing on his mind. That's typical Brown, but the Yankees don't care if he fumes through the whole game as long as his results and his health stay what they've been so far this year. Tom Gordon relieved Brown and struck out the only hitter he faced, Mariano Rivera threw a scoreless ninth, and the Yanks rode the contributions of two subs and a heady play by Hideki Matsui to top Seattle, 2-1, at the Stadium yesterday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rotation Spins Its Wheels May 17 New York Post columnist Joel Sherman: TANYON STURTZE joined the Yankees' $185 million roster yesterday, which is like having aluminum siding on Trump Tower. About the only positive about Sturtze is he's not Donovan Osborne, and that is why he is a Yankee today. GM Brian Cashman saw a chance to incrementally upgrade his fifth spot in the rotation - that Sturtze's younger, more powerful arm might produce an occasional quality start that is beyond Osborne. But don't expect much; among the 88 pitchers with at least 300 innings the past two years, Sturtze's 5.40 ERA is the third worst. "When the Yankees have to go get Tanyon Sturtze, it says all you need to know about the state of pitching," said a scout who has watched the Yanks of late. "You better be able to develop your own." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flaherty catching breaks with HR, opportunity May 17 New York Daily News columnist Lisa Olson: "As he balanced on his haunches, John Flaherty had a prime view of imperfection incarnate. To most everyone else - the Yankees, the Mariners, the fans who delightfully squeezed into a jam-packed Stadium, even the hypercritical owner - Kevin Brown appeared to be working on something pretty darn special." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- '57 Copa brawl turned Billy Martin into a nomad May 17 Washington Times columnist Dick Heller: "Martin paid the biggest price. A month after the fracas, he was traded to the second-division Kansas City Athletics in a six-player deal. It didn't matter that manager Casey Stengel loved his self-confidence and brash manner. Now the Yankees' front office had an excuse for dumping Billy." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe makes Sturtze first option as fifth starter May 17 New York Daily News: Tanyon Sturtze arrived at the Stadium yesterday a few hours after a red-eye flight from his former baseball home in Las Vegas. He was a little bleary-eyed and he nearly made the turn toward the visitors' clubhouse instead of the home one, something most new Yankees experience on their first day. "But Sturtze also got some good news about his new role - he is likely the Yankees' new No. 5 starter following the trade Saturday night that brought him from the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Vegas." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contreras ready, says Connors May 17 New York Daily News: "Credit Billy Connors with his second save. The Yankee pitching guru, who spent the past week in Columbus trying to help Jose Contreras regain his confidence and control just as he did last year, was rewarded for his efforts yesterday." Contreras made his second solid start for the Clippers, allowing four hits and striking out 12 in seven innings against the Buffalo Bisons. Despite some shaky early moments - Buffalo's Chris Clapinski stole home in the third with the bases loaded - and a whopping 126 pitches, Contreras picked up the win (2-0 with Columbus) and more importantly, may find himself in the Yankee rotation as early as this week. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeter Can't Shake Slump May 17 New York Post: The Yankees played Game No. 37 on the schedule yesterday afternoon at the Stadium. If you failed the math portion of the SAT, that means the season is roughly a quarter over. However, it does not take a mathematician to add up the number of hits Derek Jeter is collecting these days, as zero tends to be a fairly simple number to tabulate. "Jeter went 0-for-4 yesterday in a 2-1 win over Seattle. The day before, he went 1-for-7 at the plate, and Jeter is now hitting .195 for the season." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doldrums resurface for Jeter May 17 New York Daily News: "Derek Jeter once again stressed that he doesn't care about his personal statistics, although his reaction to a sixth-inning pop fly told a different story." Jeter slammed his bat in frustration following that swing, and his slump is back in force following a few days of feeling better about himself at the plate. Jeter completed a 1-for-16 series against Seattle with an 0-for-4 showing in yesterday's 2-1 victory, dropping his average back under .200.
