NEW YORK -- Equal parts oracle, love letter and historic document, it arrived at Hideki Matsui's house when he was only 19, a message from a baseball god painted in perfect kanji characters.

"Mr. Matsui, you are the star of the Giants," it read. "Let's make sweat together to build a kingdom. I am looking forward to you joining the Giants."

It was signed by Shigeo Nagashima, Mr. Baseball in Japan, that country's version of Joe DiMaggio and at that time the manager of the Yomiuri Giants. If that still doesn't impress you, just try to imagine this: Joe DiMaggio, managing the Yankees, and sending a gushing letter to a high school senior, addressing him as "Mr.," anointing him a star before he'd taken a single big-league at-bat.

If Joe DiMaggio wrote me a letter asking me to "make sweat" with him, I'm uncomfortable. Shigeo could have worded it better. Or maybe that's a Japanese saying. Or maybe the exact translation of the words to English doesn't really convey what was meant. Either that or the Indians pitcher wasn't the only one recruited for the porno.
