Yankees notebook: Contreras won't be rushed

Star-Ledger Staff
NEW YORK -- Joe Torre announced that tomorrow's starting pitcher will be left-hander Donovan Osborne who, in his first start last weekend in Seattle, got roughed up.

Jose Contreras, whose demotion opened a roster spot for Osborne, will pitch Sunday for Columbus. Torre couldn't commit to Contreras returning after one more start in the minors.

"We have to wait and see," Torre said. "He was mixed last time -- his velocity was good, but he had some lapses in the middle innings, where his velocity wasn't as good, and he wasn't as aggressive. It was kind of the same thing we had here. We'll see. I don't want to say, 'He needs two more,' or 'He needs three more,' or 'The next one's enough.'"

Torre said he wants to talk to Contreras on the phone after Sunday's start. The manager also wants to speak with pitching consultant Billy Connors, who is monitoring Contreras' progress. But Torre said he would not let whatever Osborne does tomorrow factor into the decision.

"I can't do that," he said. "We made this commitment to do this (sending Contreras down), and I think we have to get him right."
