That was one of the worst f*cking games i've ever seen!!!!! I don't ever want to hear this guy torre call john flaherty the "best" backup catcher he's ever had!!!!! ( To me it's leyritz!) This guy can't call a game if his life depended on it and he can't field the damn ball!!!! And someone tell me why Quantrill has to come in every game!? I understand we have a limited bullpen, but please i'm sure he's not the only pitcher we have!!!!!!! I also think Vazquez needs to understand it's all right to throw a 0-2 pitch in the dirt!!!!! Also why did they make chone figgins, jeff devanon, Adam Kennedy and Casey Kotchman into f*cking hall of famers!!!!! And last but not least, I am really getting worried about bernie! This is just getting odd now with him being such a automatic out so far this year!!! :no2: :no2: :no2:

I know he is not the hitter he once was, but have you people watched the Yankees longer than 2 years? Besides last year, Bernie has always started very slowly. You might as well get it out of your head that he's going to retire. How often do players retire in the middle of a long-term deal unless they have a career-ending injury? The answer is almost never. Bernie will be a Yankee through next year and depending on how he is playing at the end of 2005, the Yankees might decline his option for 2006. There's really no point to constantly say Bernie should retire now since there is no way it will happen.

I agree with that Matt23, but also I feel at this point Bernie's defense is too poor to play CF. He should be DH or when Giambi is, Bernie should be LF with Matsui sliding over to CF, IMO.

Agreed. That's why I didn't want Lofton. I wanted DH open to Giambi whenever he needed it and wanted Matsui in CF as much as possible. The days when Bernie was the DH, I wanted Karim Garcia kept to play in the field. I am not a huge fan of Lofton's defense either. Under my plan, Garcia could have been let go next year, and Beltran could have been the long-term replacement in CF starting next year. The way it is now, there are too many CF'ers to go for Beltran. Lofton has to go before that happens.

Lofton will be gone next year if we get Beltran.

I want him gone before going after Beltran. The last thing they need is 3 centerfielders with one of them being an extremely disgruntled Lofton.

Well, pay most of Lofton's contract and send him along with mid level prospects at the deadline for a decent #5 pitcher (if Dukee's not back) or a lefty specialist for the pen.

Bubba Crosby could easily handle the backup OF job this year . . . say what you will, but Crosby would be an excellent spot starter/defensive replacement/pinch runner to have on the bench.

it won't matter one bit if Lofton is here or not...if the Yankees can sign Beltran, they'll do it & deal w/the logistics later...you think they wouldn't even simply release Lofton if it came down to it to open up the CF slot for Beltran?

Silliness.

Lets not get ridiculous with this Bernie thing. Yes, he has been terrible so far, but besides last year, he has always gotten off to slow starts. Throw in the fact that he's older, he had an operation that weakened him, and he missed 99% of Spring Training, and you shouldn't be surprised that he's off to a slow start.

Now I don't think he's going to be the old All-Star Bernie, but:

.285 20 HR 75 RBI

I still have him hitting over .300 this season. I've watched him go through some of the most "WHAT THE FU©K IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" slumps and he's pulled through it. Remember how he started off in 2002? His slumps are...nasty, but his hotstreaks are hotter than girls in the 6th grade. He'll come around. Today was a good start.

I would gladly take those numbers. I've always liked Bernie, and I can't believe people want him to retire after less than 2 months of baseball. Be rational, people!

Blow it out your ass. .265, 13 HR, 60 RBI, .780 OPS

Bernie can't handle two bad shoulders and a bad knee especially at 36 years old.

bernie has more than earned the right to play through a little adversity . the guy has been f*cking huge for us for over a decade . bernie is an all-time yankee , and he deserves to be out there everyday right now as long as he is healthy .

what if he is still hitting .200 at the break ? then yes he needs to sit down in the second half if he is still horrible . no question . but right now the yankees are hot and it doesnt even hurt them that bernie is playing like sh*t .

it is still may for christsakes . i mean bernie is not exactly known as a guy who gets off to a hot start even before he was 36 and all broke down and sh*t . and he never had a f*cking arm in the first place ( i dont think switching him and matsui in the outfield is a bad idea) ..... bernie will be alright and if he isnt than sit him down........in july .

To clarify, I wanted Bernie getting some time in LF during Spring Training. I'd rather not make the move in the middle of the season. That's a lot to ask of him after playing center for so long. I'd like to see him starting some games in LF next Spring Training.

i was hoping they would have made that move frrom the first day of spring training . left field is perfect for bernie at this point . he would have less ground to cover and it would hide that terrible arm of his ..........

I agree, BleacherCreature, although that move would have been interupted by Bernie's emergency appendectomy anyway. I hope it happens next Spring.

Carlos Beltran should be the next Yankee CFer...next year, get rid of Lofton, have Bernie DH, & keep Giambi at 1B (no choice) & have Clark backing him up...Travis Lee should be traded for pitching if possible.

Travis Lee might be out for the season. Unless you're talking about trading him in the off season. In which case, it wouldn't be necessary. We wouldn't be able to get any "good" pitching for him. We'd just sign someone big.

i meant in the offseason...i know he's likely out for the rest of this year...if you can't trade him for a good pitcher, then trade him for a good prospect or 2...he wouldn't be inclined to be strictly a backup 1B anyway...he'll want some playing time i'm sure.

He's coming off a .275/19/75 RBI + Gold Glove caliber defense season. He'd definitely want to be a starter somewhere. I'm actually surprised noone made a serious run at him as a free agent. We might be able to get a decent reliever for him in the off season.

I'd like that. But it would be tough moving Contreras. After this season, I think he still has 2 years and $16M coming his way.

I would think the Yankees will simply decline their option on Lee for next year, but who knows. Contreras is untradable unless the Yankees eat most of his ridiculous salary.
