As many times as I've read about Scientology, I've never learned a single core belief of theirs. I'm convinced they don't have any, but it boggles my mind that someone can claim to believe in it that way. Yeah, there's something about the power rangers and nuclear weapons and medicine being bad. They've also discovered ways to teach cockroaches to feed on living flesh. On the bright side, Beck is a Scientologist! And makes awesome music. But he's also a weird motherfucker who probably does his own body weight in hallucinogens weekly, so it makes sense. 072, I don't think theists/atheists are both believers in the same sense. The key difference, to me, is that the theist extreme, which would probably consist simply of pantheism + belief that god/the gods are omnibenevolent + belief in an afterlife (like Christianity! :o), gives in completely to what I consider the basic human instinct to strive to believe in supernatural forces that make things matter and make things good. The atheist extreme, nihilism, is opposite. It's technically a belief, but it's not founded on any of the same emotions. I certainly didn't decide that it would be totally awesome if morals didn't exist, and child rape was equivalent to eating carrots as far as the universe is concerned. It's a shitty thought, since I have morals etched into my brain, that none of them actually matter. Religion is comforting. If it stops being comforting people throw it out or rationalize it. Atheism doesn't have to be comforting, and as far as I know, isn't for most people. Well, the idea that you can do whatever the fuck you want and then you die so no one cares is mildly comforting but y'know. |

Once again, Tim's beliefs and views are on par with mine (although it's clear that I obviously shouldn't be listened to when it comes to serious matters :P). But yeah, Scientology is scary business. The only reason I knew any of what CMC said was cause I saw it on a TV show. Trippy, huh? Scientologists thrive on the secrecy of their religion, I believe. Makes them feel important. But Epicurus was a douche. I wouldn't be friends with the guy, that's for sure. But I wouldn't call him out or insult him either. He may have been a Grade A jerk, but his points make (at least) a remote amount of sense. |

I don't get along with fellow atheists. They're douchebags ![]() All of my friends are either agnostic or Christians open-minded to the point that I don't think they have any idea what they claim to believe in. |

Not necessarily. I don't believe in afterlife; indeed, I too see it in organized religion as the result of mere wishful thinking or a means to control people. But theism is not always synonymous with [organized] religion (depending on how you define religion), in which case there is little difference between theism and atheism in terms of why the person in question chooses to believe what they believe.

I have no idea what your point is, 072. I didn't say you believed in an afterlife, and I didn't say theism is synonymous with religion, organized or not. I said that our religious instinct in its most extreme and dangerous form is exemplified in mainstream Christianity, among others, and the antithesis of that, in its most extreme and dangerous form, is nihilism. Also:
PS It's never really what you own, but what you threw away! |

I was saying (albeit in a round-about way) that nihilism and theism aren't mutually exclusive. Afterlife is one example. If the universe exists because it was made to exist, that doesn't necessarily mean humanity was meant to exist, let alone have a purpose. Common logical fallacies. Of course some people will believe in something just because they want to, but is that really exclusive to theism? Not enough so that you can use it as a definitive line between theism and atheism. I'm sure some people hate the very idea that there could be a being superior to humans, and some will construct their beliefs around that. |
