You can't choose NOT to sin. "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" - Romans 3:23. That includes us Christians. God also said that to those who do not believe, Christianity appears as foolishness. This was written THOUSANDS of years ago, and he STILL knew your reaction. I'll admit, If I didn't already believe, it wouldn't make any sense to me. But it does, because I believe. |

I WOULD BELIEVE IN SOMETHING IF IT MADE SENSE? CALL THE FUCKING SWEDISH PARLIAMENT, THIS IS GONNA BE HUGE! God must be a GENIUS for figuring that one out. And yes, you can choose not to sin. For instance, the other day I was hard but then I was like "nah, I'm kind of tired, I'll just go to bed". Sin avoided. EDIT: In case you didn't notice, it pisses me the fuck off when you discard my entire post because of some stupid notion you have in your head that sin is inevitable. How does that counter anything I said in my post? That it's inevitable is not an argument for free will. If anything, it's another example of something that we do not have a choice* in. *free will |

That really really bothers me. Really. Take some time out of your day and try to respond to what I'm actually saying. PS Just because I haven't yet got it out of my system, I'll provide a less sarcastic answer to something you presumably consider to actually be in some way amazing. Your claim (God's claim) is that belief and making sense go hand in hand. There's a chicken and an egg here: Either it made sense, so you began to believe in it, or you need a bit of blind faith for it to make sense. Why isn't this amazing? 1) We tend to believe in things that make sense. 2) We're dumb as shit. Your mommy/daddy told you to go to church. So you did. Then it stuck. MIRACULOUS. More importantly, we really like to be happy. We like to be right slightly more than we like to be happy, which is why nihilists exist, but if all you need to do is take something for granted to think infinite happiness is on the menu, then hell yeah, people are going to do that. |

Uh...I'm pretty sure "God" knew our reactions because in reality, it was probably some guy who was stoned out of his mind saying "Man, this shit is so crazy, no one will believe it!" So he basically said "Unless your crazy enough to believe this crazy shit, it won't make sense. Isn't that wonderful?!" Yeah, the Bible does not hold in high regard with me. I finished Exodus, found out the rest of the old testament was basically a list of do's and don'ts, said screw this, I'm gonna do something entertaining, and now said Bible sits in my closet, buried under other things that I have lost interest in (except those legos I keep in my closet. Legos NEVER get old). Tim, I love your example. And it's a very valid one at that. Furthermore, I agree with Tim, as usual. Everything he's said essentially reflects my own views (for the most part. Being nitpicky isn't something I feel like being right now. I'm too busy playing video games and having fun during this respite from college/high school). Oh, btw, I'm converting to this religion I heard about (not really, I just made it up. But lying isn't a sin in it). It's called "Super mega epic religion of win." It's pretty nice, but there's a couple discontinuities in some of their texts, but who cares? Those same texts say if I follow them to the letter, I get to go to heaven! All I have to do is believe in their deity, who is called "The greatest most epic god of pure win ever and whoever says otherwise is going to hell" and he's really cool. So yeah, if you want to convert, just let me know. I'll be sure to pray to "The greatest most epic god of pure win ever and whoever says otherwise is going to hell" and I bet he'll talk to me and then I can admit you. Yes, that last paragraph is meant to be rude and everyone should be offended by it. In case I couldn't make it any more obvious, jking. I'm still an "Athiest" in the loosest sense of the term. If anything, I'm probably agnostic. I don't necessarily believe in a higher power, but that isn't to say that their isn't one. I just don't think that said higher power is as much of a dick as many religions make him/her/it out to be. |

wow tim...actually you've brought about a excellent point, and I shall expand. beware, the following is a wall of text Think, all you religious ones out there, do you actually believe that if someone wiped your of all things religion but you still knew the scientific theories and you had your reason. Now someone reads you the entire bible, from genesis to revelations and then tells you that its all true...you'd think they were pants on head retarded. The only reason people are religious is because they're parents told them to listen to those self important priests at church preaching the none sense that is the bible. and it indoctrinated you, were it not for those hours at church you, in theory, would be atheist, the only reason I wasn't indoctrinated like the rest was because I asked questions and didn't get straight answers so i just realized that its a load of shit |

Epicurus didn't want a god, he surrounded himself at all times with pleasure and friends. He avoided any pain and suffering like the plague. He's the kind of guy you would now know as the spoiled brat who cried if things didn't go exactly his way. Or the shallow type of guy who thinks alcohal and drugs are the same. Know somebody like that? Yeah, they're dicks. Tim, you're really pissing me off. I don't care what your beliefs are; but you can still be cordial with your arguments. You bring up plenty of good points, but be more tactful about it. These are values people base their lives around, show some respect. Also, CMC. Rght now, tell me everything you know about the LDS, no google, no wiki. Spill your mind. Go. |
![]() Birds fall from the window ledge above mine. Then they flap their wings at the last second. I can see their dead weight just dropping like stones or small loaves of bread past my window all the time. But unless I get up, walk across the room and peer down below, I don't see their last second curves toward a horizontal flight. Now due to a construct in my mind that makes their falling and their flight symbolic of my entire existence, it becomes important for me to get up and see their last second curves toward flight. It's almost as if my life will fall unless I see their ascent. | |

1) He wins life then, IMO. 2) People have a right to be upset if things don't go their way. As far as I'm concerned, the universe has no right to make things go any way but ours. 3) Ethanol is in fact a psychoactive and addicting drug, if that's what you mean.
I'm arguing with the values themselves quite cordially. The inane and condescending bullshit about how god already knew what I was going to say is what pissed me off. Though while we're on the subject, how is the fact that someone bases their entire life around a ridiculous belief any less of a reason to ridicule them than if their ridiculous belief is just a small insignificant detail in their life? |

I think you have distorted definitions of theism / atheism. They are both beliefs, which aren't ridiculous in their own right. It's only ridiculous when you try to claim that your beliefs are the right ones and that you are 100% sure about that. There are theists and atheists who are like that. There are theists and atheists who are not like that. For extremist Christians, I guess that view stems from some sort of "If I have any doubt in my mind, I'll go to hell!" brainwashing, and for people like you, it probably comes from the disdain you feel when you hear things like that... creating an "all religious people are brainwashed -> all people who believe in a deity or higher being must be brainwashed" double-pretense. |
