Howdy! This topic is where we can discuss the references and cameos that exist in these games! We can also make a list and put them in this post, so with that...

Superstar Saga:
Used:
Donkey Kong - Mario rescues Luigi at the Woohoo Hooniversity the same way as he rescued Pauline. There is also a minigame featuring barrels and a skeleton that looks like Donkey Kong.
Mario Bros. - A remake of this game was included here. Fighter Flies return.
Super Mario Bros. - The main theme of this game is often heard as tutorial music. Also, the type of block from Super Mario Bros. can be seen in Woohoo University. Finally, the Border Jump minigame uses the background with the castle and flagpole from the game.
Super Mario World - Bowletta uses the Koopa Clown Car in Little Fungitown. Also, the type of block from Super Mario World can be seen in Woohoo University, and the Koopalings are fought in the order in which they are fought in this game. The Bean Fruit is also based off of the fruit that can be eaten off of various bushes.
Dr. Mario - Blue, Red and Yellow Viruses are seen in Woohoo Hooniversity, and can be defeated the same way as in Dr. Mario.
Yoshi's Safari - The Sniper Bills use Super Scopes to attack Mario and Luigi.
Super Mario Adventures - Luigi again dresses as Princess Peach like in those comics.
Super Mario 64 - The theme of Peach's Castle is remixed from this game, and the type of block from it can be seen in Woohoo Hooniversity.
Super Mario Advance - If Popple is defeated in his fourth fight, Birdo says: "You may have hurt my darling, but that is as far as you go!" as a reference to her quote in Super Mario Advance: "This is as far as you go".
Luigi's Mansion - Ghosts from this game appear in Starbeans Cafe, as does E. Gadd. The Luigi's Mansion theme can be heard when the ghosts arrive.
Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars - Geno returns as a cameo in the Star Stache Minigame. Additionally, Mario humming the Super Mario Bros. theme in the shower is first seen in Super Mario RPG, when he is showering in the Marrymore Suite.
Paper Mario - The type of block from this game is seen in the Woohoo Hooniversity. Also, the Hammer, Super Hammer, and Ultra Hammer return.
The Legendary Starfy (series) - A movie poster titled "Legend of Stafy" is seen in Yoshi Theater.
WarioWare (series) - A movie poster titled "Wario" is seen in Yoshi Theater.
Kirby (series) - A movie poster titled "Kirby Story" is seen in Yoshi Theater. This may or may not also be a play on Paper Mario's Japanese name, "Mario Story".

Unused:
Zelda (series) - Early, incomplete Link sprites and animations are in the game.
Metroid (series) - Several Samus sprites and animations are in the game.
Pikmin (series) - Several Captain Olimar sprites and animations are in the game; there are also sprites of Pikmin crowds and an animation featuring Luigi getting covered in blue Pikmin.
Star Fox (series) - Several Fox McCloud sprites and animations are in the game; there are also Slippy and Peppy portrait animations.
Wario (series) - Several Wario sprites and animations are in the game.
Excite (series) - Several Excitebike Racer sprites and animations are in the game.
Wrecking Crew - A small selection of map tiles exist in the game's code.
Tomato Adventure - Some of the unused audio files resemble those from this game.

To be continued...

Credit goes to the Mario Wiki for some of this stuff, and to YL for the bulk of the unused stuff.
Have a nice day!

Oh wow, it's been a while. Um. Hi. I guess I can get back into M&L stuff sooner or later, it really has been ages.

To use a sword, /\ and / again.

WHY IS HEROBRINE STALKING ME IN BED?

Interesting... Could you tell me what program you would use to look through a game's code please? I've been pretty interested in it, so... I tried using VGMToolbox, but it didn't work.

I generally use VBA's memory viewer and hex editors to find code, and then I will look through the code and play around with it to see what I can find. A tile viewer will also work for some of the graphic-related things, most notably some of the animated map tiles, many of Mario and Luigi's graphics, and the Wrecking Crew tiles.

However, the "Used" list is mostly based on what we can see by just playing through the game, while the "Unused" list is what requires some of this software.
