Hi everyone, Vics fan here, looking forward to a visit tomorrow night. Have you got any anedotes re your ground, please? - Biggest win / defeat there? Streakers? (Not that I`m into that sort of thing, but just by way of example!) Tornadoes? People falling out of surrounding trees (well, it happened outside the Drill Field!) Amazing goals / come-backs? Failing that, funny things people have shouted out? etc I`m going to put an article together for our programme , albeit for Saturday`s in the Trophy. I have read the history section on this site and will use some info from there too if that`s OK? Thanks a lot, Andy Pls post on here or email me if you`d rather andrew@higginson8352.fsnet.co.uk |

Please use whatever you like from the site, and thank you for having the courtesy to ask. I can think of snowball incidents and power cuts during big FA Vase games - I'll get back to you later with more details! |

I think our director John Rowley, who is currently still playing competitive football at the age of 70+ for Tunstall Town, merits a mention. He has featured on television, radio and newspapers (including the Guardian!) and is still very active down the ground (he will be there tomorrow). If you google tunstall town you'll see the articles. And talking about falling out of trees, during the close season last year, me and the Chairman went down the ground to do a couple of jobs and found John Rowley, hanging from the branch of a tree whilst sawing off, one handed, a branch that was overhanging the ground. He didn't fall out, but it was the first time I had ever seen a 70 year old man hanging out of a tree! In recent years I remember playing AFC Telford 4 times (2004/05 I think) and beating them 3 times and drawing once (in Cup). Those games included a fantastic goal at home from Matt Rhead (now with Corby I think) who volleyed back the Telford keepers goal kick from 45 yards straight into the net. In those days Matt Rhead partnered Micky Lennon (now at Nantwich) up front and it was a fomidable partnership (Lennon scored 50 odd goals for us in 2006/07). Regarding large gates, I was also there in 1998 when almost 2000 were crammed in for the FA Vase semi-final against Tiverton Town. Despite winning the game we lost out on aggregate and Tiverton went on to Wembley to win the Vase. The sizeable away contingent's rendering of 'I am a cider drinker' will stay with me forever! This season we have had over 1100 in for the FA Cup game against Bradford PA. |

Biggest win in recent times was 13-0 against Flixton in the North West Counties League. Our biggest ever win is listed as 23-0 against Cross Heath WMC in the 1965 Staffs Cup. Many Grove fans have very fond memories of the 1997/98 season, where the team won the North West Counties League and Cup double, and reached the semi finals of the FA Vase. If you head over behind the goal on the right as you go in and cast your eyes downwards, you may still be able to see the names of the team carved in the concrete. There's a bit of irony in this, as the hard standing used to be about a metre closer to the goal, which was enough to deny Kidsgrove a well-earned promotion to the then UniBond League. The work was completed by the beginning of the next season, but that was not deemed to be soon enough. It still rankles slighthly that entry to the league is now pretty much a free for all! Kidsgrove have played in front of 1,000+ crowds only twice at the stadium - 1,903 against Tiverton Town in that Vase semi-final, which we won 2-1, but missed out on a Wembley final 3-2 on aggregate. The second occasion was this season against Bradford PA in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round, the furthest we have ever reached. It's a bit of a quirk that FA Cup football was played at the ground before Kidsgrove entered the competition. The first match was a Preliminary Round Replay between Eastwood (Hanley) and Cogenhoe United on 31st August 1994. Eastwood groundshared for the final three years of their existence, two seasons with Kidsgrove and their final one at Newcastle Town. That replay ended all square, which back then necessitated a further replay, which Eastwood won 4-2. They then had a "home" match in the 1st Qualifying Round in which they beat an up-and-coming Rushden & Diamonds, 1-0. Two years to the day from that initial replay, Kidsgrove played their first home FA Cup game at the ground, losing to Chester-le-Street on 31st August 1996. I've saved the snowball incident until last. Once more this occurred in the 97/98 season in a top of the table local derby clash with Newcastle Town. With Kidsgrove trailing 2-1 at half time, the snow started to descend, but a combination of some frantic brushing and an orange ball enabled the match to continue. Athletic pulled the score back to 2-2, and with the game deep into added time were awarded a free-kick just outside the area. Now, Kidsgrove fans being a helpful lot, pointed out to ex-Grove player Chris Holmes in the Castle goal that the resulting shot was going to fly into the top right hand corner of his net. Sure enough, dead ball specialist Paul Kiely stepped up and put it exactly there, while a collection of cold, white spherical objects mysteriously made there way towards Holmes. Suffice to say he was not impresssed! |

Cheshire Cat , Good luck from me too I also cannot be there tonight (Tues) for reasons well known on this forum, I won,t mention the 14 ladies again because it seems to stir the wrong sort of thoughts in Craftman,s mind. As a new (this season) supporter of Kidsgrove I am sure that you will find your welcome as genuine as I did it is a very friendly place to be. Lets hope you are grinning like your namesake after tonight s game. |

Not a good night on the pitch for us Trickies, yet - without knowing owt about the deal, I'm sure most - if not all - Vics fans will appreciate the fact that you, Nantwich (ran outa tea, but only enjoyable & affordable coffee on earth) & Macc Town have allowed our club to meet home fixture obligations. As for the responses, sheer quality - no need for grammar edit etc - better response than from many clubs at higher levels with busier forums. Email me (at address quoted below) if you want a scanned copy of the article about you club and area. All the best for the future. |
