Firstly, I'd like to say Grantham weren't lucky, they are top of the league for a reason and will be there at the end of the season. Funny game today, first half Grantham were the better side, but it looked like we'd make it to half time at 0-0 before Hodgy let a ball slip underneath him. Second half was better from us, we had a goal disallowed when their keeper dropped the ball into the net, and he repeated the same trick shortly after but no one was on hand to poke in the ball. Grantham then scored a second, before Grove were denied by an excellent goal line clearance. The home side went straight up the other end, were met by another rush of blood from Hodgy who charged out and the ball was rolled into the empty net. Something odd has happened with the attendance - it was announced as 223, so either Kidsgrove took 100 last year, or the good folk of Grantham are turning their backs on the league leaders. Anything from today was going to be a bonus, so I don't think we should get too downhearted. It's the games against the mid-table teams that are going to decide our finishing position. |

good side grantham , but to be honest we would get better crowds if we were top of the league, very poor home crowd considering their position |

Reece1, thanks for the view of our team, but I not sure what you are basing your crowds comment on. You didn't get any better crowds than this season when you made it to the play-offs two seasons ago, nor when you just missed out again last season, in fact, despite your poor start to the season, your crowds are slightly up this season, probably because you have already played Leek and Newcastle at home. I am sure you will get a boost when Ilkeston come in April with the sniff of play-offs in their noses. We are also expecting a big crowd against them two weeks later, hopefully higher than your FA Cup crowd, but not as high as '98, I am sure. One big crowd for an FA Cup 4th qualifier shows nothing. When we came for the next game at your place, bringing the usual 50 or so, there were only 180 there. Hardly shows a massive level of interest from the locals! We have had over 3,500 in our ground for an FA Trophy quarter final in the non-too distant past, 2,200 for a league game the same season and over 2,750 in the FA Cup 1st round in 2003 (The next game we plunged back down to our season average 400 crowd). This season has already seen one league attendance at our place almost half that you got for the cup tie. The people of Grantham do come to watch a sucessful side. The fact that we have increased our crowds by 35% this season shows that. If we carry on as we are, I would expect us to finish the season having increased our crowds by over 40% on last season, averaging around 240. That is probably more than any promoted side from this division since Nantwich. I would also expect a further increase should we be in the Premier Division next season. I would expect more than 1200 for an FA Cup 4th qualifier at the Meres. It is not likely to happen, however, as the FA always draw us away when we get there!! Tamworth, Rushden & Diamonds, Morecambe, Ashton United in the last 13 years, not one at home. |

my honest view is grantham are by far the most solid team in the league ,i wish you all well for next season ,not a dig ,but not a fan in watching football when tbe pitch and stands are in different counties. Our season in the league has been well below expectations, but a great cup run was a major highlight .My view on your crowds was based on your population and far fewer local teams to compete with . |

Chasetown averaged 366 when they got promoted two years ago. Attendances, of course, don't matter in the slightest in terms of league success, despite some clubs still thinking they should.

I needed cheering up after today's result, and this post on Grantham's forum certainly did it: On this day 3 years ago we beat Kidsgrove 1-0 away, looking at the Town line-up none of that side now play for us, whilst Kidsgrove have 3 players that played in both. Our overall record reads: Played 10 Won 8 Drawn 1 Lost 1 Well done Kidsgrove, think we can safely say we are better than you and have been on nearly every occasion, sadly we won't meet again in the league, but a small chance in the laters stages of the Evo Stick [sic]Cup next season . At first, you may wonder why, but it's such a compliment that a fan of a team of such great history, support and attendances (see above) should care that much to take the time to research team line-ups and playing records against us. We should be proud of how far we've come over the years to mingle amongst such greats, all off the back of hard work by a few individuals, including having to put our own ground together. It's a very bold prediction that we'll never meet again in the league - I'll make a note of that for the coming months/years/decades. Personally if I had those supreme powers of foresight, I'd put them to decent use, get very rich and Grove would be in the Premier League! Is it morally wrong to want tax-dodging Ilkeston to win the league? |

To be fair 3-0 was probably not a fair reflection of the game in which Grove gave a better account of themselves in the second period. We were certainly ring rusty but did enought to win the game with something to spare. Just a few comments on your team based I admit only on the last two games bwtween us. I am not familiar with your usual set up.We play wing backs in a five or three formation at the back and you set yourselves up to match that with the bald headed lad as the last man.If you don't normally do this it can throw the team out of its rythym/shape. I presume Dave Walker was injured,or not fit enought to start and he is a big miss,in fact he played against us at your place but was clearly not fully fit then nor was he when you came to our place at the end of last season- although he did score that day. I dont know who was missing but some of the subs looked more lively? Shotten and Davidson(or was it Dove) looked lively in central midfield,Kinsey is just slow. When we played at your place some the defence was overweight(I think one of them has since left) and pedestrian and on Saturday it was just pedestrian! Overall I think over the last two seasons we have steadily improved and you seem (FA Cup run apart) to have regressed? |

I think your comments, although only based on two games, are very close to the mark. Dave Walker's carrying a groin injury, and you're right he's a big miss when not fully fit. He's scored 98 goals in under three seasons, and given the number of games he's sat out due to injury must average over a goal a game. Shotton/Davidson did cause your defence some problems - if Shotton's strike hadn't been cleared off the line, it would have given us a way back in perhaps, but it was an excellent piece of defending. Our first choice defensive last man was unvailable, hence Danny Smith (bald lad) being pressed into that role on numerous occasions. We also miss Tim Sanders' creative input in midfield, a fact made worse by the fact he's now playing at the back for Leek - what a waste. To be honest, though, if we loaned the entire Barcelona squad, we'd probably still lose to you given previous results! League tables don't lie and indeed we have gone backwards over the past couple of years. Grantham have shown the value of consistency within a team, and have arguably been the best side in the league for the past 18 months. The title's far from won yet, though... |

I personally take nothing for granted Alan. We are in a good position but still a long way to go.If Ilkeston win by more than 3 tonight they could go top albeit we would have four games in hand and play at Rainworth tomorrow night. I think its a tough call for you to make the playoffs now with Loughborough and L--k better placed. |

The play offs were an extremely long shot even before Saturday's match. Our league position is slightly false - we could drop to 16th without kicking a ball if teams below us win their games in hand. I'd say it's the between the current top 5 and Leek for the playoff positions, depending on how their much moaned about fixture congestion plays out (it's only ever a problem if you're losing). But I see no reason why we shouldn't at least aim for 7th to salvage a bit of pride from the season. |
