Very ,very ,poor today ,even when winning it was dire to watch and in the end rainworth got a point they deserved ,everything seemed wrong ,players out of position and giving the ball away to easy ,no width and defending at home against an average team who we made look good ,yep it's a point we didn't eve N deserve really ,saying that we missed a couple ,but we were hanging on at the end |

Awful game. On the plus side, I have a money-making opportunity for the club: we can sell off the left hand half of the pitch for housing as we don't seem to have any intention of using it to play football on. |

If I were a Grantham fan (God forbid), I'd be more interested in the fact that my team are five points clear at the top with a game in hand rather than the number of people watching the game! |

Best team on the park was easily the three officials, the ref made three mistakes one was for Grove,s benefit ( the disallowed goal ) and two minor ones (free kicks) Dugout line got one offside wrong. Main stand line from the dugout area appeared to be very capable. My marking for teams is as follows Ref and his officials---7 Grove (a very generous and biased)---4 Rainworth (for not letting their heads drop )-----6. The ex wife ( we parted more than 40 years ago) talk more than the lads do sometimes it is as if they are complete strangers with each other, come on Pete Iv,e known you a long time and one thing for sure you could always be heard talking and shouting when you were playing. |

Shouldn't be too harsh on Grantham - it's only because they thumped Romulus yesterday that we moved up a place. Plus we need someone to stop Ilkeston winning the league! Returning to football, last season I thought Grantham and Kidsgrove were very closely matched, but whereas this year they've gone on to look like promotion favourites, we're a complete shambles on the pitch. Dare I suggest we could learn something from them? |

You had two season where I thought you were one of the, if not the, strongest team in the league and so I have been a bit surprised at where you have been this season. There are many random variables in football, bad runs can easily follow good. I remember Tamworth once being runaway promotion favourites and blowing it with an amazing 10 consecutive league defeats. So no one is getting carried away at Grantham. In balanced competition most teams in any given league are of a similar quality to the others, generally there are no stand out 'pub teams' or 'Barcelonas', maybe you're just on the bad side of the statistical graph...having said that I wasn't too impressed when we played at your place as you seemed far less solid at the back and less potent up front. The bulk of the team at Grantham have been together for 3 seasons, that certainly helps as well as building over time by bringing in those extra bits of quality like Brindley at the back, Ball in midfield and Grimes up front, once you get the winning groove more players want to come and we've been fortunate to get Damien Magee who can only warm the bench and old favourite Sean Cann...but who knows what will happen next. Funny old game football. In terms of the stadium. Someone said to me at Brigg they wished we had a ground like the Hawthorns which drew hilarity all round. Everyone gets a good view at Grantham of all the ground and surely that is a priority. I never get this non league obsession with being close to the pitch. The 700+ crowd at Rushall last season was a disaster, half the crowd couldn't see all the play, around 30 people were standing on picnic tables...and people wonder why our full time friends think non league is one step up from pub football. Whatever else, everyone at Grantham sees all the game and as I've said before, not a single fan of Orient complained about facilities or atmosphere. Interesting to see your comments re a trip to Brigg. Again, this is professional football and has to be expected in my view, indeed in recent years the leagues have become even more regionalised at this level. In recent years I've seen Grantham midweek games at Welling (130 miles), Sittingbourne (153 miles) and Hastings (176 miles) and all wins as I recall! Going further back I can recall trips to Rhyl, Runcorn, Witton and Morecambe in midweek and we never thought twice about 80 mile plus trips to Hednesford and Halesowen. Just be thankful you don't play in the same league as Newport IOW...we had our game there called off 1 hour before kick off, they had a Sheffield type scenario with their pitch and many teams like Spalding ended up travelling there midweek! |

The point about visibility is a good one, although this isn't necessarily restricted to older grounds. Daventry's new stadium has the best clubhouse and bar I've seen at this level, but they chose to put everything on one side of the ground and set the stands back, so the view of a large part of the pitch is blocked by the building. You can't really expect clubs to provide the facilities for large crowds if they only get them once every 10 years though - it would be financial madness. All grounds are different, that's part of the joy of football. Every fan will see the good in their own: I like the intimate feel of our ground from four low stands on each side, Grantham fans point to the view and facilites at The Meres, our friends from Leek have the turnip-growing opportunities on their pitch and if you get bored at Castle you can always take a bike ride. In terms of atmosphere, I find it varies from week to week and is massively affected by events on the pitch: the more controversial, the better. Personally, I've always thought Belper to be one of the best in our league - decent ground, reasonable gates and you always feel like you've got your money's worth there. Other people's experiences may differ, of course. The key to success on the pitch is mitigating those random factors as much as possible, for example by passing the ball to the players in the same colour shirts and tackling the oppostition. We haven't been doing much of that lately which may explain our relative positions. |
