What time is it?
|
The meeting today was long, and I'll admit, extremely tiring. It began at 3:00pm East Coast, and ended at 6:30pm. For 3 and a half hours we basically picked out each part of the storyboard reel, and--this being the longest--destroying walls that would probably be a hassle in the near future. These dreaded metaphorical walls continued getting thicker and thicker as if eventually we would just hit the mother of all walls with a huge splat and 16 members smacking into one another as if Gargamel found the hidden village of the Smurfs. Similes aside, and a dreaded foreshadowing, we hit chapter 1 of today's adventure: the storyboard. You can see the completed storyboard here, and hear outside opinion, but a few things were decided in the first hour: -The opening animation of the mall scene should be re-done. -The tipping of the cart during GIR's ravaging cheese-monster stage, should be re-done. -Minute 3:00-4:00 should be re-done -The scene of the "Obeyanator 2000" should focus on the computer as it shows a would-be device that Zim would deny. -The camera spinning sequences should be edited, or removed. -Zim should run for cover when Mini Moose is going to attack Dib. -Include more Moosey-damage when MiniMoose attacks in 10:58. -And finally, fade out and add a "later" when Zim and GIR are suffering what seems to be unrepairable damage to the base and themselves. Future critiques will be posted in the topic stated above. Now that it was settled, the following question arose: what about the animation? It seemed like an easy task. We agreed that we would have two groups of animators: the ones that strictly animated in symbols and tweening would do a rough animation, while the frame-by-frame animations would do the clean-up to smooth out the movements, and the lipsync. Seemed pretty fair, and we had artists volunteering for background art. To test this theory, we decided to mix ZazzyPaws' and Ontdre's boards to try the scene where Zim introduces MiniMoose: Well, okay then. We're all here. Now... cringe in fear at the newest, most amazing addition to ZIM's army of evil, MY INCREDIBLE NEW SIDEKICK! MINIMOOSE! MINIMOOSE floats in from the kitchen, purple, smaller than GIR, and even less threatening. If the scene would be completed, the entire episode would be made in this method. Since the scene is stiff, the animators would be Tallest Sarah, Animator, and an extra frame-by-frame animator; background art would be drawn by Invader Nat and colored by Cosmographia, yours truly. The job was divided, a light was seen at the end of this dark night over the ocean. Until Poseidon decided to have the last laugh, and reveal to us the final test: Toon Boom versus Flash. Toon Boom does not export .swf nor does it work with symbols. This would mean that Tallest Sarah's role would be difficult if every other animator has Flash. This was where the meeting took longer, and more problems continued to occur. We will run a test to see if exporting Toon Boom movies in FLV can be edited in Flash. If so, we have defeated Cthulu, and we can go on with our IZFAS lives. If not, it's back to the drawing board. Overall, I'd say the meeting was an 80% success. We managed to pluck out and approve the storyboard, we think this animation technique will work well, but...very few actually contributed, it was more like an audience. Not only that, the dreaded Toon Boom vs. Flash problem hasn't been resolved yet. Opinions? Hopefully, the future is clear, and we can roll up our sleeves and see Zim get the episodes he so rightfully deserves. I would like to finish this summary and review with this, a small 'speech' written just for the occasion: I would like to say a few things. If we all approve of these storyboards, minus a few modifications we may have obviously pointed out, I would like to give out an idea how I think the animation would go. We obviously have a small number of animators, and if I didn’t have 3 math classes this semester, I would have happily helped, as you all know I would have. Now, onto the animation, like many cartoons, animators and background artists are different. Hence, storyboarders and artists who CAN draw backgrounds, will have another task: making the animators’ lives easier. Animators will do “puppeteering” with symbols and the characters following Tallest Sarah’s art style, (I.E. following the style of the show strictly). If you can’t copy the style, practice by tracing screen-shots until then. Leave the lip-syncing and clean-up to our other group, the frame-by-frame animators, who will make the animations smoother and draw the mouths. Hence, the animators will be divided into two tasks: the tweeners and the clean-ups. That way, things will be done at a faster rate, and it won’t be as hard for everyone. We will have rough animators, background artists, and clean-ups. If we are lucky, and our artists are responsible enough to make the deadlines, we may have something to show at InvaderCon. Hear me out with this: to do this, everyone needs to cooperate. I understand if things are tough in some households, same goes on my part, but if we signed up for it, it meant that we were really willing to do something about the show. So I’m warning you beforehand, if you sign up for this, you’re staying. If we admins give you a homework, do it like any other homework you would normally do. If you can’t, let us know, but, personally, I dislike hearing excuses. If you can’t do it, say it now, but do not abandon us half way. From this point on, IZFAS can seriously call itself the Invader Zim Fan Animated Series, and this is going to be strictly our job. This is not just a fandom website, and I know many of you have an amazing talent just waiting to show to the world. This is your opportunity, and I hope that what you will show is the best you can give. I think we can all agree that we can officially say now: Welcome to IZFAS Refresh. Let’s get to work! ~Cosmo |

That was a killer summary! o.o I don't think I would've been a great contributer if I had gone though, but I do agree with most of what was decided. You did an excellent job compiling that storyboard though! It really made my inner Zim geek come out. :D Sadly, I can't offer suggestions for the animation problems. Whatever I'd say would seem ridiculous seeing as I've only ever animated traditionally, and have never seen what Flash or Toon Boom look like. Though, Isn't there a way you could convert the files with a converter? I have an AVI to GIF converter, so I don't see why there wouldn't be one out there for .swf or whatever files come from those programs. That was a great speech by the way. |

Wow what an amazing summary!! =3 Alright, what Cosmo said has got me excited, but it also got me thinking. I had to do some long thoughts on such a subject, because I want to be as involved here as I can possibly be. But I'm sick of making excuses for myself (no matter how valid they are for me, they suck when the rest of you have to hear why I'm delaying boarding etc.)... So?... I would honestly say 'yes' I'll go ahead and volunteer myself for background artist. But I simply cannot, first I do not have a program such as Flash or Toon Boom. And second, as my issues with boarding have shown I do not have the time. I can do voiceovers for sure. But drawing? That takes me an incredibly long time, and with school starting in a week, time I will have even less of. I don't want to let the team down. But I cannot offer any artsy contributions for a while. Of course I'll still be here to cheerlead and do voiceovers, but like I said boarding and art-ing (xD) is something I would love to do. But I don't want to say that I can, when I probably can not. |

I'm about 60 percent done with the background sketch. I just need to print out some additional reference and correct the stupid table a little. |

@Dana: Thanks a bunch! :D I'm glad it helped, it means a lot. x3 As for the animation problem, we almost have it figured out. @Rachel: It's all right, at least you can stick around and do voicing. I respect your decision, and I'm happy you said it early in the game. :) @Nat: *highfives* You're awesome, Nat. Thank you for working on it today. :3 Can't wait to see it done! |

Oh yeah, highfive, baby! xD I hope I can post a nice result tomorrow. It was quite a pain to change everything to a different perspective, especially since the stupid kitchen seems to change its look just a little bit in every episode it appears in. The sizes of things keep contradicting each other when I compare the kitchen from the first episode with the kitchen from "Germs". It's a bit annoying, but at least no fans can complain about anything being inaccurate. xD |

XD Exactly! I'll also be away tomorrow, going to apply for a Minor Degree, so I probably won't get to see it until tomorrow night, let alone work on it. So, no rush. :3 |

Okay, I haz finished teh kitchen sketch! I used screenshots from "The nightmare begins" and "Germs" for reference. The background I drew mostly resembles the "Germs" background. There's grime stuck to the fridge, the cupboard, the oven and the trashcan. The thick line on the floor marks where the kitchen floor ends and the living room floor begins, in other words: where the wall with the door should be. The door is most likely three floor tiles wide and allows direct view at the toilet (xD). The surfaces facing towards the wall/door are much brighter in colour then the ones facing to the side. For some reason, the trash can is illuminated. The table and chairs were a bitch to draw, I hope they'll look better when they're digitalized. ...Have fun colouring, Cosmo. xD I drew the whole kitchen just in case it might be useful later. |

... Thought I might as well help with redoing the scenes that everyone wanted to be changed. Starting with Rachel's part because she said she wouldn't be able to help with storyboarding anymore. Just doing this very small part here for now: INT. DOOR OUTSIDE ZIM'S LAB - DAY. GIR, in his doggy suit, paces back and forth, jumping up, trying to get a look through the energy window in the door into the lab. GIR pokes at the window, and receives a shock. GIR Whatchadoin?? WHATCHADOINN?????? |

Very nice summery! Sorry I missed the meeting. I have Adobe Media Encoder if we do need a program to convert files types. September 2nd I will be moving from Boston to California via car (gah! Long road trip!), but after I get my apartment all set up, I'll be all ready to help you guys with animating. Just let me know what the final decision is for animating everything. ^^ |

@Nat: Great! All I have for now is a plain wall and floor but this is my first time using CS4, I wanted to do it professionally. :D @Slucer: Awesome, well, if there's any part you'd like to re-do. >w< @DBK: Ouch, very long road trip O_O Still, I bet it's for the best. x3 Do you think the animation idea is good? |
