I started out looking for a Musinex alternative (searched: "any herbal alternative to Mucinex?"). This NAC looked pretty exciting (promising) to me at first at least until I ran into a reference saying that it accelerated cancer cell growth. Quite the opposite of some claims that it may help in treating cancer. I'll post various snippets from around. Natural Mucinex Alternative Songster Songster 2 years ago Member•2 years on site•1122 posts I have been using NAC for a great many years for sinus congestion. The other day I called my LLMD to ask him what I could use for my allergy induced stuffy sinuses, and he suggested Mucinex. Well, I don't do really well with over the counter sinus meds, so I did a little research. I wish I could say I had an 'ah ha' moment; but actually I had a 'duh' moment instead!!! I don't know, call it Lyme brain, but when I did the search for a natural alternative to Mucinex, guess what came up...yep... ...NAC.... I'll have to increase the amount I take.... http://www.mdjunction.com/forums/lyme-disease-support-forums/medicine-treatments/10952197-natural-mucinex-alternative ======================================== Mucinex/guaifenesin ann3915 ann3915 2 years ago Member•5 years on site•166 posts Has anyone had any problems with anxiety or depression while taking Mucinex which is also guaifenesin? I'm stopping my Sudafed because I believe it is causing me to have anxiety and insomnia even if I only take it during the day. I just started Mucinex recently and wanted to hear anyone else's experience on it. I have severe allergies. http://www.mdjunction.com/forums/bipolar-support-forums/general-support/10757229-mucinexguaifenesin ======================================== ^^^Want to note that it puts me in mind of ions. Positive ions (which is a misnomer that stuck even after it was straightened out) that are really negative, have a damaging impact on us, is in hot and dry weather, causes us to be irritable, whereas negative ions which are really positive and beneficial to our health and come from a splashing, crashing of water which releases the negative (really positive) ions which help repair our health, calm us down, and make us feel better. I imagine these are related. ======================================== |

N-acetyl Cysteine For more than three decades, a safe, low-cost compound has provided millions of people relief from the coughing, wheezing, and thick phlegm associated with cold and flu. Of course, pharmaceutical companies long ago co-opted it for profit by incorporating it into various patented drugs. The sad consequence is that most aging individuals have never heard of it. Even many doctors remain unaware of its potential role as a frontline defense against some of today’s most deadly public health threats, including:
Fortunately, renewed clinical interest in its broad-spectrum benefits is yielding fresh data on promising interventions for this safe, effective compound. In this article, you will discover the latest research on N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a readily available, inexpensive amino-acid derivative with four decades of scientific validation. You will learn of its role in restoring intracellular levels of one of the body’s most powerful antioxidant defenses, glutathione (GSH). You will also find out how 600-1,800 mg of NAC daily may act as an effective intervention against a constellation of chronic, degenerative diseases, including impaired glucose control and cancer. An Underutilized Intervention NAC is a slightly modified version of the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine. When taken internally, NAC replenishes intracellular levels of the natural antioxidant glutathione (GSH), helping to restore cells’ ability to fight damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS). NAC has been used in conventional medicine for more than 30 years, primarily as a mucolytic (mucous-thinner) inhaled to manage conditions such as cystic fibrosis, in which mucous is abnormally thick and tenacious. While there is little in the scientific literature to support its use as an inhalant, NAC administered in this form remains highly popular among experienced pulmonary speclialists. NAC given intravenously or orally, on the other hand, saves lives every year as a treatment for acute poisoning with acetaminophen-containing pain-relieving drugs. Acetaminophen is sold as Tylenol® and combined with other drugs to create analgesic compounds, including Vicodin® and Percocet®.6 Overdoses with acetaminophen are the number one cause of acute liver failure in the United States.6-8 Too much acetaminophen overwhelms the body’s glutathione reserves, which creates widespread and irreversible liver damage. NAC quickly restores protective levels of glutathione, averting catastrophe. http://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2010/5/N-Acetyl-Cysteine/Page-01 |

N-Acetyl Cysteine Overview Information N-acetyl cysteine comes from the amino acid L-cysteine. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. N-acetyl cysteine has many uses as medicine. N-acetyl cysteine is used to counteract acetaminophen (Tylenol) and carbon monoxide poisoning. It is also used for chest pain (unstable angina), bile duct blockage in infants, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease), Alzheimer’s disease, allergic reactions to the anti-seizure drug phenytoin (Dilantin), and an eye infection called keratoconjunctivitis. It is also used for reducing levels of a type of cholesterol called lipoprotein (a), homocysteine levels (a possible risk factor for heart disease) and the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with serious kidney disease. Some people use N-acetyl cysteine for chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hay fever, a lung condition called fibrosing alveolitis, head and neck cancer, and lung cancer. It is also used for treating some forms of epilepsy; ear infections; complications of kidney dialysis; chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS); an autoimmune disorder called Sjogren’s syndrome; preventing sports injury complications; radiation treatment; increasing immunity to flu and H1N1 (swine) flu; and for detoxifying heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. N-acetyl cysteine is also used for preventing alcoholic liver damage; for protecting against environmental pollutants including carbon monoxide, chloroform, urethanes and certain herbicides; for reducing toxicity of ifosfamide and doxorubicin, drugs that are used for cancer treatment; as a hangover remedy; for preventing kidney damage due to certain X-ray dyes; and for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Healthcare providers give N-acetyl cysteine intravenously (by IV) for acetaminophen overdose, acrylonitrile poisoning, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease), kidney failure in the presence of liver disease (hepatorenal syndrome), chest pain in combination with nitroglycerin, heart attack in combination with nitroglycerin and streptokinase, and for helping to prevent multi-organ failure leading to death. N-acetyl cysteine is sometimes inhaled (breathed into the lungs) or delivered through a tube in the throat to treat certain lung disorders such as pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, and others. How does it work? N-acetyl cysteine treats acetaminophen (Tylenol) poisoning by binding the poisonous forms of acetaminophen that are formed in the liver. It is also an antioxidant, so it may play a role in preventing cancer. http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-1018-n-acetyl%20cysteine.aspx?activeingredientid=1018&activeingredientname=n-acetyl%20cysteine |

Reason for taking: Other 5/4/2015 6:23:17 PM Reviewer: CharlesA, 55-64 Male on Treatment for 1 to 6 months Comment: Helps with non stimulating energy in Chronic fatigue. Not sure why it's being used for cancer. I've read NAC was used by the scientific community to see if the drugs are killing cancer cells through the common mechanism of increasing reactive oxygen species. If adding NAC stops the action of the anticancer agent, than it is assumed it was acting through oxidative action. In April 2010, Korean researchers reported on the action of NAC in combination with a proteosome inhibiting chemotherapy drug known as MG132. First they showed that MG132 increased the amounts of ROS in lung cancer cells and as expected, the drug slowed the rate of growth of the cancer cells. Then they treated the cancer cells with NAC. The drug no longer slowed growth rates. I found the following at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center: And preliminary results suggests oral NAC may help reduce chemotherapy-induced neuropathy (18). However, NAC accelerated lung cancer growth in an animal model Hide Full Comment http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientreview-1018-n-acetyl+cysteine.aspx?drugid=1018&drugname=n-acetyl+cysteine |

Sci Transl Med. 2014 Jan 29;6(221):221ra15. doi: 10.1126/scitranslmed.3007653. Antioxidants accelerate lung cancer progression in mice. Sayin VI1, Ibrahim MX, Larsson E, Nilsson JA, Lindahl P, Bergo MO. Abstract Antioxidants are widely used to protect cells from damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The concept that antioxidants can help fight cancer is deeply rooted in the general population, promoted by the food supplement industry, and supported by some scientific studies. However, clinical trials have reported inconsistent results. We show that supplementing the diet with the antioxidants N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and vitamin E markedly increases tumor progression and reduces survival in mouse models of B-RAF- and K-RAS-induced lung cancer. RNA sequencing revealed that NAC and vitamin E, which are structurally unrelated, produce highly coordinated changes in tumor transcriptome profiles, dominated by reduced expression of endogenous antioxidant genes. NAC and vitamin E increase tumor cell proliferation by reducing ROS, DNA damage, and p53 expression in mouse and human lung tumor cells. Inactivation of p53 increases tumor growth to a similar degree as antioxidants and abolishes the antioxidant effect. Thus, antioxidants accelerate tumor growth by disrupting the ROS-p53 axis. Because somatic mutations in p53 occur late in tumor progression, antioxidants may accelerate the growth of early tumors or precancerous lesions in high-risk populations such as smokers and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who receive NAC to relieve mucus production. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24477002 Note: http://www.researchgate.net/publication/259984562_Antioxidants_Accelerate_Lung_Cancer_Progression_in_Mice Edited by yass, Nov 25 2015, 03:08 PM.

I'll just excerpt a bit of this. It is after all the bottom line me thinks. ======================================== So far the Guaifenesin Protocol has not been demonstrated effective in a controlled clinical trial, or approved by the FDA for support of Fibromyalgia symptoms. An early one-year trial completed at the University of Oregon in June 1995 by Dr. Robert Bennett concluded that “patients in the placebo group compared with patients in the guaifenesin group appeared to improve equally - a finding that suggested a placebo effect,” says Dr. St. Amand. But “it is our belief that this study was flawed, due to our own lack of knowledge,” he explains. http://www.prohealth.com/library/showarticle.cfm?libid=12081 Edited by yass, Nov 28 2015, 03:48 PM.
