Have You Ever Wondered Why You Feel So Thirsty and Bloated after Eating That Pepperoni Pizza?

Well, that's because your body has been put into a tough position. It can't get rid of the table salt fast enough so it must neutralize it. How does it do that? It is forced to take water from our healthy cells to surround it and as a result, you retain water and kill off healthy cells. Consumption of table salt increases blood pressure, and leads to a number of disorders such as edema (water retention) and excess fluid in the tissues (i.e. cellulite). So of course, your allopathic doctor will tell you to reduce your salt intake. Unfortunately most allopathic doctors have had only one nutrition class in their entire careers. The nutrition class that they take does NOT teach from a healing perspective. In other words, they are not taught about and most of them do not believe in the healing power of food. They are taught to use medication to "cure" an ailment. For this reason, allopathic doctors do not know (and cannot teach their patients) about the healing benefits of unrefined salt.

When water is not available to get into the cells freely, it is filtered from the outside 'salty-ocean' and injected into the cells that are being overworked despite their water shortage. This secondary and emergency means of supplying important cells with injected water is the reason, in severe dehydration, that we retain salt and develop edema -- to have more water available to draw from for filtration and injection into the cells.

Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in. The body is very dynamic and always changing. This is especially true with water in the body. We lose water routinely when we:

  • breathe and humidified air leaves the body (this can be seen on a cold day when you can see your breath in the air, which is just water that has been exhaled);
  • sweat to cool the body; and
  • eliminate waste by urinating or having a bowel movement.

In a normal day, a person has to drink a significant amount of water to replace this routine loss.

-------------------------------

What causes dehydration?

Dehydration occurs because there is too much water lost, not enough water taken in, or most commonly, a combination of the two.

  • Diarrhea: Diarrhea is the most common reason for a person to lose excess amounts of water. A significant amount of water can be lost with each bowel movement. Worldwide, more than four million children die each year because of dehydration from diarrhea.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting can also be a cause of fluid loss. Not only can an individual lose fluid in the vomitus, but it may be difficult to replace water by drinking because of that same nausea and vomiting.
  • Sweat: The body can lose significant amounts of water in the form of sweat when it tries to cool itself. Whether the body temperature is increased because of working or exercising in a hot environment or because a fever is present due to an infection; the body uses water in the form of sweat to cool itself. Depending upon weather conditions, a brisk walk may generate up to 16 ounces of sweat (a pound of water) an hour to allow body cooling, and that water needs to be replaced by the thirst mechanism signaling the person to drink fluids.
  • Diabetes: In people with diabetes, elevated blood sugar levels cause sugar to spill into the urine and water then follows, which may cause significant dehydration. For this reason, frequent urination and excessive thirst are among the early symptoms of diabetes.
  • Burns: The skin acts as a protective barrier for the body and is also responsible for regulating fluid loss. Burn victims become dehydrated because the damaged skin cannot prevent fluid from seeping out of the body. Other inflammatory diseases of the skin such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, also may be associated with significant fluid loss.
  • Inability to drink fluids: The inability to drink adequately is the other potential cause of dehydration. Whether it is the lack of availability of water, intense nausea with or without vomiting, or the lack of strength to drink. This coupled with routine or extraordinary water losses can compound the degree of dehydration.

I was going to start a new thread but when I saw this thread thought I would just add it here.
I've been reading The Land of Painted Caves, the last book in the Earth's Children's series written by Jean Auel. She researched for what she put in her book. Hyssop was mentioned as being useful for treating edema. I researched it a little bit and though I haven't yet found a strong connection between Hyssop and edema, what I have found is very interesting and I want to get it noted for reference. It probably does need its own thread but for now this will suffice.

Okay. Thought this was interesting:

Antibiotic Properties

Hyssop tea has a lot of antibiotic properties which are produced from the leaves it’s made from, so drinking it may be a sure way to slow down and stop the growths of harmful bacteria in the body. The flavonoids present in it also have many antibiotic qualities to it which make it useful in helping to treat internal infections in the body such as throat and nasal infections.

Eases Cough & Cold

The many soothing oils that can be benefited from while drinking this tea can help ease sore throats and coughing for those that are sick with illnesses like the cold and flu. Because hyssop is considered to be an expectorant it breaks up the mucus that builds up in the throat and lungs, making way for quick relief, and even quicker healing from these particular sicknesses. The soothing warmth of this drink can relieve feelings of pain and scratchiness in the throat so it’s usually taken before bed since it can offer a better night’s rest.

Fluid retention, bloating, swollen feet, dropsy, or edema all are caused by the retention of excess water - often in the feet and ankles. Herbs that are diuretic in action stimulate the elimination of fluid, without the depletion of minerals that is a common side effect of prescription drugs. Diuretics are often included in weight loss and cellulite treatment formulas, however excess water weight is easily regained and does not represent real weight loss. If edema is a chronic problem, look for those herbs that are tonic to the kidneys and liver and well as diuretic. Cleavers and Horsetail are good examples.

Continued with list of herbs at http://www.anniesremedy.com/chart.php?prop_ID=20

Hyssop is certainly on the list but in the way of a diuretic (which all on the list are).

Cleavers sounds interesting:

Herbalists have long regarded cleavers as a valuable lymphatic tonic and diuretic. The lymph system is the body's mechanism to wash tissues of toxins, passing them back into the bloodstream to be cleansed by the liver and kidneys. This cleansing action makes cleavers useful in treating conditions like psoriasis and arthritis, which benefit from purifying the blood. Cleavers is a reliable diuretic used to help clean gravel and urinary stones and to treat urinary infections. In cats, these actions make cleavers a safe long-term aid in the treatment of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), and the herb may also be useful for chronic low-grade kidney inflammation. In studies cleavers extract lowered blood pressure without slowing heart rate or having any health-threatening side effects.

It is under the dominion of the Moon. The juice of the herb and the seed together taken in wine, helpeth those bitten with an adder, by preserving the heart from the venom. It is familiarly taken in broth, to keep them lean and lank that are apt to grow fat.
Nicholas Culpeper, 1653

Plantain:

The American Indian used the abundant plant as the chief remedy for the bite of the rattlesnake, and called it "snakeweed" after this use.
Our Saxon ancestors esteemed plantain highly and in the old Lacnunga (a collection of miscellaneous medical texts,Lacnunga means 'remedies' in Old English) the Weybroed (plantain) is mentioned as one of nine sacred herbs.

It is true, Misaldus and others, yea, almost all astrology-physicians, hold this to be an herb of Mars, because it cures the diseases of the head and privities, which are under the houses of Mars, Aries, and Scorpio. The truth is, it is under the command of Venus, and cures the head by antipathy to Mars, and the privities by sympathy to Venus; neither is there hardly a martial disease but it cures.
Nicholas Culpeper, 1653
