Get my free e-cookbook Grain Free Holiday Feast and the Empowered Sustenance newsletter! Busted: Candida Myths May 1, 2013 by Lauren 172 Comments Affiliate Disclosure busted candida mythsWhat is wrong with The Candida Diet? What is wrong with the popular Candida Diet? And what is a safer, healthier solution to eliminate candida overgrowth? You are in the right place and asking the right questions, because I have some answers for you! Sugar is healthy? What about Candida? Those were the common questions I received on my popular post Sugar: Your Body Needs It. “But I have candida issues,” folks commented and emailed me, “I can’t eat raw honey, fruits and maple syrup.” The popular Candida Diet takes many forms, such as the diet outlined in The Body Ecology book or The Candida Diet website. These anti-candida protocols all eliminate natural sugars like honey and fruit as well as starchy vegetables like winter squash and carrots. I’m here to tell you that you can and should eat natural sugars, even if you have candida issues. It sounds like a scary concept. Believe me, I was also hesitant to start incorporating healthy sugars back into my diet after my short and extraordinarily unpleasant stint on The Candida Diet. I am grateful that I escaped harmful candida myths, because now I’m healing my body and addressing the root cause of my candida overgrowth. So, without further ado, here are the three problems I have with The Candida Diet: 1. The Candida Diet doesn’t address the root cause First, candida overgrowth results from poor digestion and a leaky gut… not simply the consumption of sugar (although a high sugar, refined food diet can lead to the leaky gut down the road). Candida diets, which allow the consumption of gluten free grains, will not correct a leaky gut and therefore will not permanently address candida overgrowth. In most cases, it requires a grain free diet to heal and seal the gut lining. Why? Undigested food particles cause injury to the small intestine. This damages the villi and microvilli. Microvilli contain cells that produce the enzyme disaccharidase which breaks down disaccharides. But when the microvilli are damaged, disaccharidase production slows or halts. This leads to impaired digestion of disaccharides, bacterial overgrowth (and candida overgrowth), and an increase in gut-damaging bacterial by-products. It also allows undigested food particles to escape from the intestines into the bloodstream, causing food allergies or sensitivities. The cycle worsens over time (Source and source). read more http://empoweredsustenance.com/busted-candida-myths/ |

Starved candida needs sugar and so will travel upwards through the intestines in search of it. If no sugar is found, candida will project invasive filaments into the intestinal wall, pass into the bloodstream, and – if not quickly destroyed by white blood cells – become systemic. Note - Yucca Root; Yucca Schidigera: Keith Johnson, MD, editor of 'Turn Back the Clock' newsletter, states, 'Adding the yucca plant to your diet will act as a natural cortisone, and will wash out the harmful poisons that cause arthritis.' According to the late Robert Bingham, MD, director of the Desert Hot Springs Medical Clinic in Palm Springs, CA, yucca extract supplements can produce arthritis remissions. He supervised the use of yucca in thousands of patients. He told reporters, 'We have known for several years that a food supplement extracted from yucca acts like a natural form of cortisone, to reduce and eliminate the pain, swelling and joint stiffness suffered by arthritis victims.' Bingham goes on to explain, 'Toxic substances or harmful bacteria, when absorbed into the system, create allergic responses - anything from migraine to arthritis. Consequently, an anti-stress agent such as yucca saponin might have the same beneficial effect on wastes in the body and be effective in treating arthritis by improving and protecting the intestinal flora, rather than any direct action upon arthritis. 'Strong evidence supports the theory that some forms of arthritis may be caused or worsened by toxic substances occurring in the intestines and absorbed by the body. Yucca seems to inhibit these harmful intestinal bacteria and at the same time help the natural and normal forms of bacteria found in the tract.' Mary Clarke, Ph.D., of Kansas State University reports that saponins 'serve as natural antibiotics for the plant.' And now, 'scientists are looking at how they can help humans fight fungal infections, combat microbes and viruses, boost the effectiveness of certain vaccines, and knock out some kinds of tumor cells, particulary lung and blood cancers. They can also lower blood cholesterol thereby reducing heart disease. http://www.jeunesse-eternelle.com/yucca-root-arthritis.htm |

Traditionally, I have used Dr. Christopher's Original Formulas Yellow Dock Combination. This formula is only sold in the bulk now because of its content of comfrey (which I believe to be integral to its effectiveness and desirable in any type of yeast problem). Although it is available encapsulated, the ingredients are different from the bulk formula. I use the powdered bulk formula either stirred into juice or encapsulated. I also like bayberry[sic] and everyone uses Pau d' Arco, which is certainly effective. These herbs together or separate will inhibit Candida growth. http://www.naturalnews.com/023191_candida_food_glucose.html So easy to say bayberry when you really mean barberry. Edit - I don't know why I wanted to correct that or presume he didn't mean bayberry. Edited by yass, Sep 7 2017, 09:07 PM.

i. Chew your food very thoroughly. I would not be surprised to discover that raw foodists who are still struggling with Candida, universally fail to chew their food to a paste before swallowing. This means that holes and chasms exist in the food that will resist mixing with digestive juices, but which will be in the perfect condition to ferment. ii. Take cayenne pepper in water (work up to ¼ teaspoon of cayenne in any amount of water) 15 minutes before each meal to optimize digestion like nothing else on earth I know of. http://www.naturalnews.com/023191_candida_food_glucose.html Please read/refer to Why Probiotics Are Not Needed http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/probiotic1.php Post #15 |

Resveratrol administration has increased the lifespans of yeast, worms, fruit flies, fish, and mice fed a high-calorie diet, but it is not known whether resveratrol will have similar effects in humans. (More Information) http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/phytochemicals/resveratrol/ Resveratrol – Resveratrol, a compound found in the skin of grapes, may contribute to the anti-inflammatory characteristics of red wine. In 2007, researchers investigated (in a laboratory) the fungicidal activity of resveratrol against Candida albicans. They concluded that resveratrol demonstrated potent antifungal properties, and appears to be safer than conventional antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B (Jung 2007). In 2010, further research revealed that resveratrol impairs the ability of Candida albicans to convert into its more infectious form, and thus may be a useful agent against candida infections. In fact, resveratrol’s chemical structure may form the foundation of an entirely new class of antifungal drugs (Okamoto-Shibayama 2010). http://www.lef.org/protocols/infections/fungal-infections-candida/page-04 Resveratrol - Antiviral. In addition to inhibiting neuraminidase, Resveratrol also sends a message to cells to stop manufacturing viruses. This is a proven antiviral found naturally in red wine, peanuts, mulberries, Japanese Knotwood root (richest source), raisins and red grapes. Resveratrol supplements are relatively inexpensive, are more stable than wine and is available in liquid form for absorption in the mouth. No toxic effects noted. Garlic – For centuries, the garlic plant Allium sativum has been used as a popular food, spice, and herbal remedy (Aviello 2009; Dini 2011). Garlic has been noted to possess cardiovascular (Ginter 2010), anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial benefits (Dini 2011). Garlic (and its constituent allicin) can cause potent growth inhibition in yeast and be effective against mucosal and systemic/invasive candidiasis (Chung 2007; Low 2008). Research suggests that allicin, due to its effect on reducing the growth of biofilm (a component of candida allowing it to become resistant to certain antifungal agents), may reduce candida’s ability to become resistant to common antifungal drugs. Allicin may also decrease the production of candida by disrupting its membrane (Khodavandi 2011). A clinical trial found that the topical administration of a garlic paste was as effective at suppressing the symptoms of oral candidiasis as clotrimazole solution (the conventional antifungal treatment for this indication) (Sabitha 2005). Likewise, a clinical study of candida vaginitis concluded that there was no difference in treatment response between a vaginal cream containing garlic & thyme, and a vaginal cream containing clotrimazole (Bahadoran 2010). http://www.lef.org/protocols/infections/fungal-infections-candida/page-04 |

This one kind of tickled me: Can My Diet Survive the Shortbread Season? by Terry Willard, ClH, PhD It’s that time of year when all those parties and social gatherings dot the calendar. Everywhere we turn, sweet temptation rears its ugly head. How can we resist those shortbread cookies, the rich creamy cheeses and, of course, the mandatory rum and eggnog? People with concerns can be split into four categories: those following an anti-yeast (candida) diet; those worried about weight gain; those who feel that party foods may compromise the immune system; and those who know they just ate too much junk food and want to detoxify. Fortunately there are some good recommendations for each of the above problems. Prevention is by far the best solution. We all know the truth to the adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." One of the best means of prevention is to start early with a 12-day detoxification program. By doing a thorough cleanse beforehand, you won’t feel quite so guilty when you slide off the garden path into the dessert tray. During those 12 days, combine a detox cleanse consisting of herbal formulas (which you can find in your health food store) and a special diet. The coinciding diet should be alkaline, with no dairy, flour, processed foods or sweets. The average person will lose some weight on this program, lower candida levels and do a fair job of detoxing the body. I have many patients who do this simple program beforehand to ease the pressure of upcoming social events. As well, many people detoxify in January to undo some of the damage they did over the festive season and to get themselves back on a good diet. If you are on a strict, no-sugar diet to combat candida, we have found a great "cheat pill" that comes from China and is called huang lain su (Coptis chinensis). Take two or three pills, two to three times daily, depending on the extent of your cheating. The good news is that candida can’t grow while you are consuming Coptis. The bad news is that it only works for about two weeks every three to four months. So, only use it for those special occasions. If you don’t have a Chinese dispensary nearby, try using the close North American relatives: gold thread (Coptis spp.), barberry and/or goldenseal. You can find combinations of these herbs in your health shops. The dosage remains the same as with huang lain su. If weight gain is your major fear, losing a few pounds before the season can even out any possible problem. Fairly good success can be achieved with two nutritional supplements: CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) 2,000 mg twice daily and CitraMax (Garcinia cambogia) 1,000 to 4,000 mg, 30 to 90 minutes before eating. This is effective in reducing both appetite and fat production. Follow this program before and right through the holidays. One of the surest methods to avoid overindulging at parties is to fill up on safe foods before you leave the house. The food might look appealing, but your fingers aren’t quite so likely to wander to the hors d’oeuvre tray when you are full. If you take one tablespoon (15 g) of protein powder and two tablespoons (30 g) of psyllium husks in one to two glasses of water or juice before a party, you will feel full for about three hours. For the immune system take: beta-carotene (20,000 IU twice daily), vitamin C (at least 1,000 mg twice daily), echinacea (200 to 500 mg twice daily) and zinc (10 mg twice daily). This program will help keep your immune system on alert to ward off any nasty bugs and can be continued for most of the winter. In many countries around the world, festivals are for celebration, fun and entertainment. They should be times to enjoy. After all, many of us need a break away from the routine of our busy lives. If you successfully prepare for this time and get back on your normal program after the festive season, little harm is done. And there’s always that detoxification program waiting to help get you back on track. http://www.alive.com/articles/view/17185/can_my_diet_survive_the_shortbread_season |

It is recommended to read the whole page. Here is the last paragraph: People who are familiar with a yeast-free diet stay away from bread, cheese, mushrooms, vinegar, soy sauce, barbecue sauce, black fungus, and white fungus. But there are other yeast-based foods such as crackers, pretzels, dry cereal, miso, tempeh, canned vegetables, pickled vegetables, beer, root beer and other fermented beverages which are often overlooked by those with yeast infections. Grains, noodles, non-yeast bread and white rice are recommended. They are easy to digest. Brown rice and wild rice have more nutrients than white rice, but they take more energy to digest, and it is better for Spleen Chi Deficient people not to eat them often. Certain vegetables are extremely therapeutic for those with yeast infections, such as Daikon radish, which can help cleanse your system and is known as a "phlegm cleanser". The family of yellow-colored foods such as yam, winter squash, and pumpkins are strongly recommended from the viewpoint of traditional Chinese medicine, as they tonify and strengthen the Spleen and Spleen meridian. Yeast-based medications such as penicillin, mycin, chloromycetin, and tetracyclines should be avoided, as well as yeast-based Vitamin B supplements. http://www.tcmpage.com/hpcandidiasis.html |

Taking notes. Can Candida Cause Diabetes? Candida and Diabetes are two common conditions that occur as a result of past antibiotic use. Each condition supports the existence of the other, but fungal candida alone can create diabetes through direct and indirect means. Diabetes is a condition in which regulation of the level of sugar (Glucose) in the blood has been altered. The hormone insulin is responsible for ensuring that blood sugar levels don’t get too high. Insulin, a protein-based hormone produced by the pancreas, moves sugar from the blood into the cells and tissues. There are two main types of diabetes, Type I and Type II. Type I is primarily diagnosed in children and is considered to be an autoimmune condition. Type II is primarily diagnosed in adults due to lifestyle and other factors. Type II is the most common form. There are over 20 million adults with diabetes, and 40 million with pre-diabetes. Both the incidence and prevalence of diabetes and candida have risen steadily since the introduction of antibiotics in the 1940s. Diabetes has now become the leading cause of death among various ethnic groups and is the 6th leading cause of deaths in the United States. Worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 347 million people have diabetes and approximately 3.5 million die as a result of it. In 1940, there were no recorded studies on candida. Now there are over 53,000 studies, with 2466 recorded in 2013 alone. The incidence of both systemic fungal candida and diabetes have risen sharply in recent years. Read more at http://blogs.naturalnews.com/can-candida-cause-diabetes/ |

Sticking this here for now. I read something recently that cited Jethro Kloss, I believe had to do with Marshmallow root, and had three other views from professionals on what exactly marshmallow does (the end result was pretty much the same). Well, naughty me, I must not have saved it. I looked where I hide notes but it didn't seem to be among those I saved. I tried looking for something to do with it and I think I just found something, though a brief mention. Yeah, had to go to the waybackmachine to boot.
