I'm not ready to post here quite yet but Candida is an important topic and I'd decided to begin a thread topic about it soon, but I'm just now reading a page with an interesting reference about potassium/magnesium that I don't want to lose track of and I wasn't sure where to place it but the topic is Candida hence, I begin the thread with an excerpt from it.

Quote:

Most candida sufferers will do very well on 600 mgs each of calcium and magnesium per day in divided doses. Muscle cramps indicate you need more magnesium, and possibly less calcium, and deep muscle pains indicate you’ve taken too much calcium. If you have more cramps and muscle pains on your left side it indicates that your calcium intake is either too high or too low, and if you have more cramps and muscle pains on your right side it indicates that your magnesium intake is either too high or too low. It is very difficult to balance calcium and magnesium, but each individual must find their own optimal levels by experimentation. Your body can only handle a maximum of 500 mgs of calcium at a time, so if you are taking more, it must be split into smaller doses.
http://nourishedmagazine.com.au/blog/articles/how-to-overcome-candida-pt3

I think it was that left side/right side thing that intrigued me. :pc

I don't take calcium at all. Years ago I bought some fancy multi pill vitamin packs from Costco which included calcium and soon after got my first case of kidney stones. I thought the calcium supplements had to do with it and I haven't wanted anything to do with it since. Kidney stones are not fun.

This is the first reference I've ran across stating that Oregon Grape can treat yeast infections. It is a close relative of Barberry which is said to treat yeast infections.

Reference:

Oregon Grape root has mild antiseptic effects and is thus useful in douches for vaginitis(Michael Tierra (The way of Herbs): 107). It is recommended to treat leucorrhea and to help the body rid itself of yeast infections when combined with scrupulous cleanliness and internal use of the herb (Mal:250-2). It is mentioned as a specific to increase appetite (Lewis:2 13). It has been used for bronchial congestion.
Dr. Christopher said that in cases of chronic constipation, Oregon Grape root combined with cascara sagrada would clear the condition, taken in wine glass full doses. For skin diseases, he said, use the strong decoction internally and externally, either as a wash or a fomentation.

http://www.herballegacy.com/Barberry.html

Can't resist adding this:

JELLY HERB

Evidently the berries of this plant make “the most incredible purple-blue jelly” (Lang:26). This jelly can be used medicinally as well as at the table. The berries, once gathered, should be processed immediately. To make the jelly, use your favorite recipe or the following from Dr. Shook:

2 pounds of fresh Oregon Grape berries
1 gallon distilled water.

Boil until the water is just level with the top of the berries. Mash the berries to a pulp; then strain through a sieve and press. Return liquid to a clean saucepan (enamel is best; do not use aluminum or iron), add 1-1/2 pounds of brown sugar and simmer for another ten minutes, or until the syrup is not in excess of three pints. Pour into hot sterile jars, seal, cool, and store in a cool, dark place (ShoA:209).

The berries can likely be used in the same ways as the barberries are; check that newsletter for these uses.

Note: Because using too many herbs or supplements at one time can decrease their potency, it is suggested to use only one herb per week. For example, use Black Walnut every day for one week. Then stop the Black Walnut at the end of the week, and start Garlic for one full week. At the end of that week, discontinue the Garlic and begin on Golden Seal and so on.

When you’ve gone through the herbs you want to use, repeat again until you have no more symptoms of candida.

Abrasions, cuts and scrapes; infections of the bladder, eyes, nails, reproductive tract, sinuses, skin, throat and parasite problems berberine kills a very wide variety of bacteria and germs and it also kill the parasites Leishmania and Plasmodium, the organism that cause malaria, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Vibrio bacteria not to mention it also kill various kinds of fungi.

Did you know that berberine is effective against some bacteria that have become antibiotic resistant and that it is a more potent antibiotic than the sulfa drugs that are used to treat some kinds of infections?

========

Diarrhea some studies have shown that people affected by cholera-induced diarrhea, when treat with 100 milligrams of barberry four times a day, experience significant relief from acute diarrhea after twenty-four hours.

========

Yeast infection berberine contained in the barberry exerts a threefold action against yeast infections and yeast mastitis. Berberine has a direct antibiotic effect on Candida albicans and it also inhibits bacterial infections. It stimulates the blood flow to the spleen which in turn releases compounds to stimulate the immune system. Did you know that berberine is particularly effective in activating macrophages which are the immune cells that attack yeast infections?

========

If you are taking vitamin B6 or the amino acid L-histidine you should not use barberry to treat acne or yeast infection.

========

Barberry should be avoided by people with diabetes because it lowers the blood sugar. (?)

Blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure

Berberine may be helpful in maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels in those with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Guang Ning, of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in Shanghai and colleagues randomized 116 diabetes patients to receive one gram of berberine daily or placebo for 3 months. Average hemoglobin A1C -- a measure of long-term blood sugar control -- dropped from 7.5 percent to 6.6 percent in those taking berberine supplements. Patients taking berberine also showed significant reductions in total and "bad" LDL cholesterol. Blood pressure also fell in patients taking berberine. Patients on berberine lost 2.3 kilograms (5.1 pounds), on average, compared to 1.3 kilograms (2.9 pounds) for the placebo group. Patients taking berberine were more likely to have a side effect of constipation, and two patients in the berberine group had their dosage reduced for this reason. OREGON GRAPE ROOT

Botanical: Mahonia aquifolium (also known as Mahonia nervosa)
Family: Berberidaceae (barberry/barley)
Other common names: Mountain Grape, Oregon Grapeholly, Oregon Barberry, Alegrita, Sowberry,

Holly-leaved Barberry, California Barberry, Mahonia, Mountain Holly, Pepperidge, Sourberry, Yellow Root

Oregon-Grape is one of our most valuable herbs and thought to be unequalled in helping to purify the blood and cleanse the liver of wastes, as well as promoting a healthy gallbladder. It is also an effective antifungal and antibacterial. Moreover, Oregon-Grape helps to treat many skin problems and ease digestive disorders.

These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent disease. Individual results may vary, and before using any supplements, it is always advisable to consult with your own health care provider.

History:
Oregon-Grape, the state flower of Oregon, derives its name from its use as a medicine and food along the Oregon Trail, and that popularity as a food and medicine nearly led to its extinction in the late nineteenth century. The plant was also included in the traditional diets and medicines of the Pacific Northwest aboriginal peoples. Both the leaves and root bark of this evergreen perennial are used medicinally, and the root, containing the powerful alkaloid, berberine, was officially included in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1905 to 1916. Oregon-Grape was originally thought to be a species of Berberis and later determined to belong to its own genus, Mahonia, but all the species belong to the same plant family. Oregon-Grape closely resembles Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) in its chemistry and is used in similar ways, but the slightly different composition of the antiseptic alkaloid, berberine, makes it a better liver tonic. Oregon-Grape has been called yerba de la sangre (herb of the blood), indicating its importance as a blood purifier. The smaller Mahonia repens (creeping Oregon Grape) is also used for similar medicinal applications. Oregon- Grape leaves greatly resemble holly leaves, and the plant bears beautiful yellow flowers and small, tart, purplish-black fruits that resemble grape clusters. Oregon-Grape was included in many culinary preparations, including a jelly that is rich in vitamin C, and the root was also used as a greenish-yellow dye (the berries were a source of purple dye). Blackfoot Indians called it Ot-to-gue and used it to check rectal hemorrhage, dysentery and stomach troubles. The Kwakiutls made a bark tea to offset an excess of bile, and Oregon-Grape was also found to be beneficial for open boils, kidney troubles and as a topical antiseptic for wounds. In Europe today, Oregon-Grape is used topically to treat psoriasis and dry skin rashes. Some of the principal constituents in Oregon-Grape include alkaloids (especially berberine, berbamine, isocorydin and oxyacanthine), tannins and vitamin C.

Beneficial Uses:
Oregon-Grape Root is probably unequalled as a corrector of liver secretions. The root purifies the blood and cleanses the liver by helping to stimulate bile flow and releasing toxins. Some American herbalists believe that while strengthening the liver, it will also alleviate liver-related symptoms, such as jaundice, headache, toxic blood, poor digestion and gallbladder problems. Oregon-Grape helps the liver to metabolize wastes and toxins and has been said to be useful in the treatment of chronic hepatitis-B. Modern herbalists use the root to cleanse the spleen, and it is also thought to lessen the size of the spleen.

The berberine content in Oregon-Grape is believed to possess a wide spectrum of antifungal and antibacterial activity and has been used to stop diarrhea caused by toxic pathogens, such as bacterial dysentery. Some studies also claimed that its antibacterial activity has countered such important germs as E.coli and N. meningitides, among others. Berberine and other alkaloids have also been shown to kill a wide range of microbes and have been effective in human studies for speeding recovery from giardia, a parasite causing contagious diarrhea and cholera.

Used internally and externally, Oregon-Grape Root has been found to be very effective for reducing and preventing psoriatic lesions. With its blood cleansing and antibacterial qualities, it has been found to be helpful in treating various skin problems, such as acne, boils, rashes and eczema.

Oregon-Grape Root is said to regulate the digestive system. It is a bitter that is thought to stimulate and improve the function of the digestive organs, increasing hydrochloric acid in the stomach and digestive secretions that aid assimilation of foods. It is said to smooth mucous membranes and alleviate digestive complaints, including nausea and gastritis. Some studies claim that its use helps to remove obstructions in the intestinal tract and stimulate sluggish bowels. Herbalists sometimes use Oregon-Grape as an overall tonic to benefit delicate and convalescing people.

Berberine (found in Oregon-Grape, Barberry, Goldenseal, and the roots and bark of a number of plants) is now the focus of attention for use in diabetic care. In a report from Medical News Today (Diabetes News/August, 2006), a collaboration of Chinese, Korean and Australian scientists at Sydney's Garvan Institute revealed that berberine could be a valuable new treatment for this disease, giving scientific backing for its glucose lowering effects that were documented in Chinese literature and long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Garvan scientist, Dr. Jiming Ye claimed that in lab tests, the berberine activates an enzyme in the muscle and liver that is involved in improving sensitivity of the tissue to insulin, which, in turn, helps lower blood sugar levels. Moreover, the berberine might help to reduce body weight. Professor James, the head of Garvan's Diabetes and Obesity Research Program added that despite berberine's widespread use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it would have to be evaluated following the defined clinical trials process.

Studies in China have shown that an alkaloid in Oregon-Grape Root, called berbamine, can help to protect bone marrow and promote recovery after chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Contraindications:
Berberine-containing plants (Barberry, Oregon-Grape, Goldenseal, etc.) should not be used by pregnant or nursing women. Those who suffer from hyperthyroid conditions should not take Oregon Grape Root Herbal Supplement, and diabetics should use Oregon-Grape Root only under the supervision of a physician. There is some evidence that berberine may interfere with the efficacy of tetracycline medications. High doses (many times the recommended amount) may cause vomiting, lowered blood pressure and lowered heart rate, lethargy, nosebleed, skin, eye and kidney irritation. Do not take Oregon-Grape Root if you have chronic diarrhea, a duodenal ulcer or excessive stomach acid, as it could make these conditions worse. Oregon- Grape root is not recommended for prolonged use.

Blood Test
An Anti-Candida Antibodies, or Candida Immune Complexes test. There are 3 antibodies that should be tested to measure your immune system’s response to Candida – IgG, IgA, and IgM. High levels of these antibodies indicate that an overgrowth of Candida is present. This is the most reliable test for Candidiasis that you can find.

Candida (yeast overgrowth)

If you were able to gather up and weigh the bacteria in your digestive system, researchers estimate the total would weigh about four pounds! Under ideal circumstances, these beneficial microflora inhabit our intestines and perform many functions that aid our digestion and overall body health. But when the colonies of bacteria fall out of balance, populations of potentially harmful microbes can flourish and present a host of problems. Candida albicans is one such microbe. Candida is a yeast that normally occurs in the intestine and is kept in balance by beneficial bacterial colonies of acidophilus. When levels of the "good" bacteria drop, however, Candida populations can grow rapidly, with the potential for increasing inflammation in the body and causing an overall feeling of ill health.

Research has shown an association between subjects with inflammatory skin disorders, yeast overgrowth and fungal infection. In a recent study, 21 out of 34 people with psoriasis were found to have Candida albicans in the spaces between their toes or fingers. And most were also affected by fungi from the Tinea genus. Another study that looked at stool samples of people with psoriasis found disease-producing microbes - predominantly yeasts - in the colon. A 1997 German study, "Mycoses in patients with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis" found that Candida infections of the skin were seen more often in psoriasis patients compared to controls. Late onset (type II) psoriasis demonstrated a higher rate of candidosis cutis (skin) and candidosis oris (mouth) as compared to the controls. Yet this research found that the influence of fungal infections on psoriasis and atopic dermatitis is not as strong as often portrayed. A 1994 study by the Department of Medicine (Dermatology) at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine found that psoriasis of the palms and soles is frequently associated with oropharyngeal Candida albicans.

Clearly, more research on these associations is needed. Notwithstanding, fungal infection in the onset or recurrence of inflammatory skin diseases is certainly a factor. Candida may not be the cause of psoriasis, but it could be an indication of poor gut ecology, and treatment for yeast has been shown to correspond with a decrease in skin inflammation.
Symptoms and problems

It appears that the most common cause of Candida overgrowth is the use of prescription antibiotics and birth control pills, and some researchers believe that it may also be the result of a diet over-rich in simple carbohydrates and sugars. Because the symptoms of Candida are numerous and wide-ranging, from fatigue and depression to intestinal cramps and eczema, the condition is often overlooked or misdiagnosed. Unfortunately, if left unchecked, Candida can compound the discomfort of conditions like psoriasis and irritable bowel syndrome. Bouts of constipation and diarrhea are an extremely common occurrence as a result of this condition. As the population of yeast grows and IBS symptoms worsen, the intestinal walls can become thinned, which may lead to "leaky gut" or intestinal permeability. When the intestinal wall is compromised, it is unable to correctly perform its job, and toxins, including Candida, can leach into the circulatory system. This may lead to increased inflammation throughout the body. The rise of toxins within the system may also put an increased strain on the liver, whose job it is to filter these toxins from the system.

Candidiasis, or moniliasis, is called thrush when it grows in the mouth, a condition especially common in infants. On the skin it can show up as a red, inflamed, and sometimes scaly rash. It often leads to eczema, acne, and hives. Candidiasis moniliasis in the vagina is commonly referred to as yeast vaginitis or vaginal yeast infection. Candida can also cause candidal onychomycosis, or infection of the nail plate, and paronychia, a tender infection with inflammation around the base of the nail fold. Candidiasis can also affect the esophagus and the digestive tract. It can cause fatigue, lethargy, weakness, migraine headaches, muscle pain, chemical sensitivities and even respiratory problems. From a gastrointestinal perspective, candidiasis is often accompanied by diarrhea, constipation, rectal itching, IBD, flatulence and food sensitivities.

Candida and psoriasis

Many researchers now believe that there may be a link between Candida and psoriatic flare-ups. Psoriasis is categorically an inflammatory condition, and individuals suffering from Candida frequently experience increased incidence of conditions arising from increased inflammation in the body. Some psoriasis researchers believe that intestinal permeability or leaky gut may be the root cause of some psoriasis flare-ups.

The release of toxins into the circulatory system from poorly functioning intestines may put undue stress upon the liver. The liver, which is the main filter of toxins in the body, can become overwhelmed and unable to properly perform the fundamental functions the body requires of it for maximum health. Organs like the skin and lungs often "take over" the job of filtering excess toxins the liver is unable to process. Some believe that toxins deposited on the surface of the skin during this process may contribute to psoriatic discomfort.

Treatment for Candida

Once you have determined that you have Candida, treatment may come in a variety of forms. Since Candida is a yeast, one way to combat the problem is to deprive the yeast of food, or literally "starve it out." During this course of treatment, individuals are often encouraged to partake in a detoxification program followed by a strict dietary regimen for a few days. The diet typically suggested consists mainly of vegetables, meat and poultry, yogurt, eggs, nuts and seeds. Some practitioners also suggest eating a lot of garlic during this time. Foods high in sugars, which include alcohol and fruit, as well as all foods containing yeast, such as bread, should be avoided during this time. Many individuals report significant improvement within a week of starting this regimen. Once the Candida levels are in check, inflammation may subside, paving the way for marked improvement in other areas of health, including psoriasis. We always encourage consulting a physician before starting any treatment or diet regime.

Since the liver can get overburdened with candida's toxins because it filters the blood, cleansing this organ is essential for your recovery. Daily supplementation with hepatic herbs like, dandelion root, golden seal, wormwood, barberry, Oregon grape root, or bayberry ([sic] - I think he meant to say barberry), is highly recommended. Again, the need for increased water intake is emphasized here to facilitate internal cleansing. CAUTION: Avoid goldenseal and barberry if you are pregnant.

DIETARY DO'S AND DON'TS

Since candida loves sugar, it must be avoided in all its forms (dextrose, sucrose, glucose, maltose, lactose, fructose). Say goodbye to all fruits, except the low sugar ones like strawberries, cherries, and papayas which can be eaten in strict moderation. Read the label of every food product you buy to be sure there is no added sugar (a near impossible task these days!).

Diet is your main weapon against candida, but also the most frustrating as you will have to give up a number of foods. Bid farewell to: wheat, rye, milk, cheese, alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, potatoes, honey, mushrooms, and vinegar: all these foods promote yeast growth or can aggravate already present yeast colonies. Keep your food well covered in the refrigerator to prevent mold formation. When eating out, be sure to ask how a dish is prepared and tell the server to hold any undesirable ingredients like soy sauce or mayonnaise.

In general, a low carbohydrate diet is preferred. Carbohydrates, even complex ones, eventually break down to glucose (sugar) in the digestive tract, and sugar feeds candida. Its also adviseable to avoid the starchier vegetables like sweet potatoes, parsnips, and winter squashes. Different people, however, have different sensitivities. I've worked with patients who can handle wheat, despite a candida problem. You and your body are your best guide as to which foods to avoid. At rock bottom, however, all sugars MUST be avoided.

Due to the restrictions, you may be wondering at times, "What the hell am I supposed to eat?!" Books will be listed at the end of the article to help with food selections and recipes.

On the positive side, assuming you have no allergic reactions, you can enjoy all of the following: fish, poultry, meat, all vegetables, brown rice*, eggs, seeds, all nuts except cashews and peanuts, herb teas, beans* and lentils*, goat milk*, corn*, amaranth*, kamut*, quinoa*, buckwheat*, oats*, and spelt*. Check with a local health food store for sugar free breads made of kamut, millet, or spelt and consider eating corn tortillas to replace wheat bread. (*: moderate amounts only.) To ease their digestion, all nuts, seeds, and whole grains should be soaked for at least seven hours before cooking or drying. Soaking initiates the sprouting process and breaks up the enzyme inhibitors and phytates found in these foods.

Contrary to popular belief, foods containing yeast may be eaten if no allergic reactions are present. Brewer's yeast, for example, is a very nutritious and immune enhancing food and can be eaten for nutritional support during one's recovery.

As your symptoms disappear, you can cautiously add back the forbidden foods, one at a time and slowly. Do not eat any refined sugars for at least 6 months after your recovery. Having candidiasis once predisposes one to getting it again so be very careful after you are well. Indulging in too many foods too quickly can, as I can painfully attest to, cause a relapse.

HERBS & SUPPLEMENTS

The following herbs should assist in recovery: Garlic- a powerful antifungal and immune stimulant. Garlic will also help with constipation, gas, excess mucous, and blood cleansing; it is antiparasitic and hypotensive also. Some people are sensitive to garlic so increase your dosage slowly to discern any unpleasant side effects. If there are none, include it liberally in your diet, everyday. If you prefer to take garlic tablets, look for ones that are enteric coated to insure that the garlic is released deep inside the intestines where candida thrives.

Golden Seal, Barberry, Oregon Grape Root- the berberine in these herbs is lethal to candida. Berberine is also a powerful immune stimulant. Don't overuse golden seal as too much will irritate the liver: take for 2 weeks on, one week off. All of these herbs can also be used to assist digestion. Golden seal can be topically applied to ringworm, and made into a tea for athlete's foot. These three herbs are excellent for urinary tract problems, being diuretic, antibacterial, and antifungal. Like wormwood, golden seal and barberry should not be used by pregnant women.

Eczema, psoriasis and Candida

Quote forum member 'Tooter': "I thought we could start a thread about it here."

Yeast causes Eczema, Psoriasis, Itching and Rashes

Here is just a part of what the article says:

Candida and disorders of the skin

Out of all the Candida related disorders, research on psoriasis has come the closest to showing that Candida causes psoriasis. Researchers have actually shown that Candida causes all the changes in the skin characteristic of psoriasis (1). When Candida is injected into the skin of an experimental animal, the skin lesions of psoriasis, including scaling and thickening, develop. The authors of this study suggest that the scaling is a defense against the Candida (1). For some complicated reasons of experimental design, the authors stop short of saying Candida is the cause of psoriasis.

Is Candida found on normal skin? Candida may be found on normal skin, especially in skin folds (1A). Candida is much more likely to be found on skin after antibiotic use, after steroid use or in people with skin disorders (1B).

You might legitimately ask why researchers could have this major finding that Candida can cause psoriasis and yet ignore this result and subject psoriasis sufferers to coal tar, steroids and methotrexate. I actually do not know for sure why researchers would not wish to follow up their finding. One reason I would imagine is that the relationship between the Candida on the skin and the Candida in the gut is not generally appreciated. Cells which are fighting Candida in the gut can circulate and start fighting yeast whereever these cells find yeast. One place these cells might find yeast is on the skin. If one takes a narrow view and only looks at skin, one will miss this relationship. The other main problem is that researchers do not know how to clear the Candida from the gut for any length of time, so even if they did appreciate the relationship between the Candida in the gut and the Candida on the skin, they would not know how to clear the gut of yeast. Unfortunately as long as there are immune cells fighting yeast in the gut, there will be immune cells looking for yeast on the skin.

When the immune cells come into contact with Candida on the skin, the same observations of the immune system being unable to clear Candida completely all apply. The Candida suppresses the immune system's offensive weapons on the skin as it does elsewhere in the body, so inflammation can be prolonged on the skin as it is elsewhere. If the inflammation occurs in the hair follicles, acne can result. If the inflammation is spread more generally, we can see eczema. When the inflammation becomes even worse, we see psoriasis. Psoriasis is the body's immune system fighting Candida on the skin and the immune system is unable to win so the inflammation, a defensive weapon persists.

Itching is a painful sensation that something must be removed from the skin and if there is no other way, one scratches. Your body would love to remove the Candida. Candida is one of the main causes of persistent itching.

Feeling Sick or Tired? It Could Be Candida

Sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Wondering why you have sinus congestion, bloating and/or brain fog every day? I know this may sound like one of those annoying pharmaceutical ads on TV, but this issue is real and there is no quick-fix, cure-all pill. As many as 70% of all Americans are believed to have Candida overgrowth, yet most of them don’t even know it. A part of the problem is that it is not a recognized disease by many doctors and there is no miracle pill for them to prescribe! In addition, the symptoms range from bloating to depression and so, many cases go undiagnosed.

First, let’s just clarify that we all HAVE candida. Candida Albicans is actually helpful yeast that lives in our gut and its job is to assist with digestion and nutrient absorption. But, when most of us think of Candida, we think of systematic candidiasis, which, quite contrary, can be a real troublemaker. This is candida gone out of control, leaving it’s home in the gut and settling down in other parts of our body, causing a range of unpleasant symptoms.

Typical symptoms of Candida include (but is not limited to):

Chronic fatigue syndrome, yeast infections, brain fog, headaches, anxiety and depression, digestive problems and bloating, acne, skin rashes and sinus infections.

Candida and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Candida over-growth and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can both present with confusingly similar symptoms, such as long-term debilitating mental and physical fatigue, headaches, food intolerances, joint and muscle pain, and brain fog.

Other common symptoms which are much more specific to Candida include severe Pre-Menstrual Symptoms, depression, pain behind the breast bone, intolerance to strong odours, dandruff, athlete’s foot, visual disturbances, oral or genital thrush, an itchy anus and a feeling of bloating or flatulence.

Whilst I certainly do not believe that everyone who suffers from CFS/M.E. also suffers from a yeast over-growth, I have noticed that a significant proportion of the people I have treated for CFS/M.E. also have had food intolerances, bloating, thrush, or an itchy anus, and shown a positive result to a laboratory test for Candida.

Candida is a yeast which naturally lives in the human intestine, but under certain conditions the normally small Candida population can explode with serious consequences to health. From my experience, I would suggest that a Candida overgrowth may result from the immune breakdown in M.E., especially if the sufferer relies on sugar as an energy source (which ‘feeds’ the yeast) and/or coffee, which stimulates the release of blood sugars. However, although Candida alone clearly does not cause M.E., it mimics the symptoms so closely that distinguishing between the two can sometimes be difficult.
