I've been reading a lot about the Ebola outbreak in Africa. They say it is unprecedented and there is worry of a global pandemic. Besides thinking on protective attire to help prevent (or contain?) the virus (I think it is a virus? will have to double check), I've been thinking on herbs to treat the symptoms if it should become necessary. Of course, Tine's Wellness Programme contains essentials. I should add that Tine visited at another forum and commented on beetroots, which I had some confusion (ignorance) about. This info might be particularly useful for this. I'll quote Tine:

I have read your postings on my Wellness Program - thank you for your comments. The Program works, but nothing should be left out. I saw for example the discussion about beetroots. Most people are anemic but have normal iron levels. Benzene destroys bone marrow. Bone marrow produces blood cells, red and white. Unhealthy bone marrow - unhealthy blood cells. Any health protocol should include beetroots as they heal the bone marrow. Last year I was diagnosed with lung cancer - the blood literally pouring out of my mouth - 6 weeks later it was gone, using our own cancer program based on the lemon mix with a few tweeks here and there and a mind change. I had nearly given up on life because of the frustration of not being able to do what we had been doing when we still were able to fund ourselves.
Even AIDS dementia can be reversed if you realize it is candida on the brain or a lack of vitamin B3 - either one - so you hit them both.
I will keep in touch and anybody wanting more info can go to my blog or contact me. Kind regards to everybody
Healthy bone marrow=healthy blood.
The first thing I looked into more deeply is cayenne. I'd read it stopped the flow of blood. I think I'd read that it could stop bleeding internally or externally, but something I ran across today carried a strong warning. It was about taking the cayenne when on warfarin or coumadin. It should probably have a warning like raw garlic. Externally, cayenne could help blood to coagulate because of the cellulose content, but internally it has blood thinners. Here's the read if interested: http://medcapsules.com/info/Dangers%20of%20Cayenne%20for%20Heart%20Attacks%20and%20Strokes.html
In the case of Ebola, sickened persons bleed both inside and out. Both garlic and cayenne can thin the blood but perhaps blood thickening would do. Bone marrow health may also factor.

Are There Natural Foods That Will Help Thicken Blood?

Thickening of the blood usually infers either increasing the number of cells in the blood or improving the efficiency with which it coagulates. Thickening of the blood may be warranted with bleeding diseases, traumatic blood loss or after overdosing on blood-thinning medication. Benefits of blood thickening include increased oxygen-carrying capacity, stronger immune response and quicker wound healing. Consult with your doctor before you try to change the composition of your blood.
Composition of Blood
There are approximately 12 pints of blood in the average-size man. The main components of blood include plasma, which constitutes 55 percent of blood and is used to carry nutrients, minerals, hormones and carbon dioxide; red blood cells, the most common cells in the blood, which carry oxygen throughout your body due to the oxygen-binding capability of hemoglobin; white blood cells, the principle cells of the immune system that kill pathogens and clean up debris; and platelets, cells that are needed for blood clotting and wound healing. Stimulating the production of these cells or increasing the clotting ability of platelets depends on certain nutrients such as folic acid; vitamins B12, C and K; and copper.
Folic Acid and Vitamin B12
Folic acid, also called vitamin B9, and vitamin B12 are required for the production of healthy red blood cells within bone marrow, according to “Vitamins: Fundamental Aspects in Nutrition and Health.” Deficiency of either of these vitamins results in a condition called pernicious or macrocytic anemia, which manifests as malformed, immature red blood cells and reduced platelet cell production, or thrombocytopenia. Both B vitamins are ingredients in meat; poultry; fish; dairy products; and some vegetables, such as kelp, wheatgrass, beans and lentils. Broccoli and spinach are very good sources of folic acid. ---
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is required for your platelet cells to become “sticky,” which means their tendency to aggregate together and form blood clots in response to breached blood vessels. Without enough vitamin K, the coagulation cascade is slow to develop, which leads to increased clotting times, easy bruising, nosebleeds and heavy menstruation, as cited in “Biochemistry of Human Nutrition." Blood-thinning medications work by inhibiting the actions of vitamin K. Excellent natural food sources include spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, avocado, kiwi, egg yolks, most meats, some cheeses and some vegetable oils, such as canola and olive.

Back to the bone marrow! Yumm, brussel sprouts. I've only ever bought bags of frozen brussel sprouts, and I read recently that freezing before cooking takes out the bitterness (which I'm not familiar with but I gathered that some people not-so-fondly have bitter memories of them.)

I also want to note that somewhere I read that Cayenne pepper is mixed with other healing herbs because it can take the herb and deliver it to where it's needed in the body. Just to keep in mind.
Also, beets. A family member received a juicer in the last couple months and I've heard (a couple of times) that the beets produced a sweet juice that people enjoyed. (Hard to imagine). I don't know if juiced beets would be effective for healing bone marrow purposes but it sounds good. I was told it was the ordinary beets from the produce section of the supermarket used.
Sugar is the enemy. Sugar feeds cancer. I suppose if one were to indulge, something sweet with health giving properties may be a preferred option.

Moving on from blood. If I find anything new or exciting on the blood topic I'll add it here.
(Quick) Notes on herbs for diarrhea:
- Quote:
-
There are many astringent herbs that help stop diarrhea. Astringents contain tannins that tighten and contract human tissue. The result is fluid retention that can quickly halt diarrhea and reduce any bleeding. Agrimony, bayberry, comfrey, yellowroot, peppermint, slippery elm, white oak, white willow, black walnut, green tea, red raspberry leaf, and mullein are all astringent and excellent for treating diarrhea, dysentery, and even cholera. Cinnamon and dried berries (blackberry, blueberry, and strawberry) are also astringent and can help. A good tea recipe is one teaspoon of powered cinnamon to one cup of boiling water. Steep ten minutes before drinking. The key when treating diarrhea, dysentery, and cholera is to drink plenty of uncontaminated water, to avoid consuming any additional harmful microorganisms, to avoid sugar and fruit juices that feed parasites, to reduce absorption of toxins into the body, to transport toxins out of the body, and finally to heal the bowels with mucilaginous herbs. Mucilaginous herbs soothe and heal damaged parts of the digestive tract. They also carry toxins out of the body without feeding harmful bacteria. Mucilaginous herbs include psyllium, slippery elm, and marshmallow. They should be consumed with large amounts of water. Okra pods, also considered a mucilaginous herb, should be thoroughly cooked and chewed well when treating diarrhea. A recipe for slippery elm balls calls for a dough to be made of slippery elm powder and a little honey. Roll into bite sized pieces and dust with more slippery elm powder. Store in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator and eat often as a snack. Read more http://everygreenherb.com/diarrhea.html

Herbal Remedies for Diarrhea TreatmentThere are several natural herbs and herbal remedies which can be used to treat diarrhea. The herbs that are most effective usually contain one or more of three natural ingredients which are also found in most over the counter remedies. 1. Tannins are responsible for the astringent or bitter taste of many herbs. Astringents reduce intestinal inflammation. They bind with the protein layer of inflamed mucus membranes and thicken them. This slows the absorption of toxic materials and also slows the production of secretions. 2. Pectin is the primary active ingredient in the popular over the counter anti diarrhetic Kaopectate. Pectin is a soluble fiber that adds bulk to the stool and soothes intestinal distress. 3. Mucilage also soothes intestinal distress and adds bulk to the stool by absorbing water and swelling. Natural Herbs for Diarrhea Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)Because of the astragalus anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties it is considered a good natural remedy for diarrhea. It contains polysaccharides which provide support for the immune system and stimulate the activity of phagocytes (white blood cells). It also raises the level of natural antibodies found in the blood stream. Goldenseal (Hydrasis Canadensis)Goldenseal has an intestinal antibiotic action and helps to reduce adhesive E.coli while it stimulates the immune system. One of the active ingredients in goldenseal is berberine. Berberine has been proven to increase the activity of macrophages which digest bacteria and viruses. Barberry (Berberis Vulgaris)Barberry also contains berberine, which has anti protozoic properties. Protozoic diseases which cause diarrhea include giardia, dysentery, candida and cholera vibrio. Both berberine and palmatine are active ingredients in barberry and have anti bacterial properties. Another component of barberry is berbamine. Berberine and berbamine are alkaloids and strong antibacterials which are believed to increase the production of white blood cells and platelets. Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia)Echinacea is well-known as an immune stimulant. It’s active ingredients are polysaccharides and alkamides, which stimulate the body’s immune responses. It also contains polyaceytlenes which have anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti viral properties. Echinacea appears to interfere with the activity of the enzyme hyalurnidase. This enzyme breaks down the connective tissue and allows bacteria and other microbes to travel throughout the body. Carob (Ceratonia siliqua)Carob is very rich in tannins, which are astringent substances found in many plants, that have a binding effect on the mucous membranes of the intestinal tract. This makes its effectiveness high in adults with diarrhea, but even more so when used for children and infants experiencing diarrhea. The primary chemical constituents are largely sugars and tannins found in the carob pods. When these pods are eaten the gum like stability acts as a thickening agent to aid the body in retaining water and fastening together watery stools. Psyllium (Plantago ovata)Psyllium is used as an herbal remedy for diarrhea and relieving constipation due to its high mucilage and fiber content. The husks of the seeds swell by absorbing water, thus adding bulk to stool. Read more http://www.herbal-supplement-resource.com/diarrhea-natural-herbs.html
This was the first result I turned up. Consequently this ingredient, Astragalus Root, has been listed on each of the few results I've looked at. It would probably be a base herb for diarrhea. Sure is spendy. I think I'd shop around. Just noting.

Herbs for vomiting with word of caution:
- Quote:
-
The use of ginger as an herbal supplement must be avoided by all individuals who have a very low blood platelet count. This is because very high doses of ginger may interfere with the blood clotting mechanism and lead to other problems. --- Usual dosage Ginger, 200 mg every four hours as needed. Goldenseal, 125 mg goldenseal extract every four hours as needed. People with high blood pressure or pregnant women can not take goldenseal. Peppermint oil, One enteric-coated capsule thrice daily. Note - I thought I'd read a warning earlier, one of my first reads, that included ginger along with garlic as being dangerous (to those who take blood thinning medication.) It might be in the link I posted in the op. It's getting late so I'll have to pick up again sometime later.

Luckily, in a half hour you felt better again. Chinese food? Hungry again in half an hour? No?.......:o So Vitamin C huh? I guess I went overboard with the garlic and oil of oregano and all the rest. I ingest Vitamin C everyday. Let's see... Vitamin C in the form of orange juice/grapefruit juice around the clock whilst eating organic garlic sauteed in organic olive oil. Oil of oregano 3-5 drops, 3 times a day as well. Fuck Ebola and the horse it rode in on.

Pneumonia can be fatal if left untreated, and that would unfortunately require antibiotics. If you ever get sick with the flu, take Vitamin D, 2000 mu twice a day. Also I can't recommend organic garlic enough, raw or sauteed. Of course water, along with orange or grapefruit juice, just like above in my "Ebola Cure [size0]TM[/size]". It's nice when you can take something natural and cure yourself or respiratory infections and flu. It makes you feel great, strengthens your immune system.
I don't doubt that Vitamin C is helpful but I also note this info is 100% based on Jim Stone Freelancer who says an "anonymous" doctor sent the information to him. It could be but then again, it could be bogus. - Quote:
-
Here it is, the patent for the current version of EBOLA I do not have time to read all of this, but it appears to be a patent for both the virus and the vaccine to cure it. ROGUE DOCTOR PUBLISHES ACCESSIBLE AND SIMPLE EBOLA CURE, THIS IS BELOW UNDER AUGUST 1 POST or click here Why would a doctor go rogue and publish this? Perhaps because he did not agree with the plan? UPDATE: A second cure is out there: Blood transfusions taken from ebola survivors also works to stop ebola, however I would not call that cure "accessible", it only proves that "they" know of more than one way to cure ebola, and it will NOT take a vaccine. http://www.jimstonefreelance.com/index.html
- Quote:
-
How do I know this? A doctor who has remained anonymous and has worked with ebola victims has discovered this and sent it to this web site, at last check this cannot be googled which confirms this doctor did not just copy paste, SO POST IT EVERYWHERE; GET THIS OUT THERE, THE TREATMENT FOR EBOLA WHICH WILL PREVENT DEATH IS KNOWN AND THIS IS AN EMERGENCY REQUEST FOR MY READERS TO SPREAD THIS INFO AND STOP THIS EBOLA ATTACK IN ITS TRACKS. From an anonymous doctor: http://www.jimstonefreelance.com/ebola.html
Some reasoning. If you've ever been sucked in and later embarrassed for it you become more careful about information. Fear doesn't just sell vaccines, it sells snake oil stories from anonymous strangers. That said, I would definitely include Vitamin C, limes, lemons. Here's some good reading on the medicinal value of lemons and limes and their peels/rinds!: http://s3.zetaboards.com/For_My_Jee/single/?p=8138211&t=7460463http://s3.zetaboards.com/For_My_Jee/topic/7406399/1/As for garlic which I've made an intense study of for years, sauteed is tasty, but to be medicinally potent...: - Quote:

[size0] Allicin is the most powerful medicinal compound derived from garlic.[/size] - Garlic as the source of allicin.
About 10 years ago, researchers determined allicin from garlic to be a potent sulfur containing antimicrobial. Its chemical name is thiosulphonate. Its only found in small concentrations in a group of food plants called the Allium group which contains onions as well as garlic. But the largest concentration of alliin is actually found in garlic which is why they selected garlic as the source of allicin. This is the structure of allicin or diallyl thiosulphonate. In some ways it almost resembles an antibiotic- two cysteine derived molecules on the ends, but it is this S-S double bond which is the very potent part of the molecule that gives it its very strong antimicrobials activity. This comes down to the fact that if you take a garlic clove and you peel it very carefully and you smell it. There is very little smell. But as soon as you crush it...boom! You get an instantaneous smell. This is a clean smell, that is allicin that is produced. And the reason is that in garlic itself you don't find allicin but what you do find is a precursor molecule called alliin. And alliin is found within the garlic clove within the mesophyl cells and also in the garlic clove you then find around the phloem in the cells around the vascular bundle you find an enzyme called alliinase. These two are physically separated within the cell. When you crush it these two come into contact and immediately the combination of the two produce allicin, and the other thiosulphonates. "It is important to note that the garlic MUST be fresh. The active ingredient is destroyed within one hour of smashing the garlic. Garlic pills are virtually worthless and should not be used. When you use the garlic it will be important to compress the garlic with a spoon, crush, mash, grate, press, mince, or chew . If you swallow the clove intact you will not convert the allicin to its active ingredient." reference http://s3.zetaboards.com/For_My_Jee/single/?p=8160615&t=7406399

Garlic's medicinal properties are only potent if it is raw and has been crushed, mashed, grated, pressed, minced, or chewed, and consumed within an hour. Warning: Garlic Is a Powerful Blood Thinner Garlic must be used with caution by people who have a bleeding disorder, or are on blood thinning medication such as aspirin or warfarin. That's the scary thing. A blood thinner. I believe that like with aspirin a person has to discontinue use prior to a surgery. Maybe in combination with other things as a preventative. I don't know. This mentions ebola, but because of the bleeding thing, I believe it requires indepth research and investigation. - Quote:

There’s an invincible weapon against disease and infection--a cure-it-all remedy that stops any virus it comes in contact with. That includes the most feared biological agents like anthrax, ebola, and H5N1 (the infamous bird flu virus). No known germ has ever managed to develop a resistance to it. It is proven to wipe out cancer cells without harming healthy cells, and it clears plaque-clogged arteries like a charm. http://www.escapeallthesethings.com/avian-bird-flu-garlic.htm

excerpt from The Miracle of Garlic & Vinegar pg 23:
What's more, garlic actually dissolves life-threatening blood clots. Dr. Martyn Bailey of Georgetown University in Washington D.C., has produced laboratory evidence that a chemical in garlic called adenosine blocks the production of a blood compound named fibronolytic, which makes blood sticky and causes clotting.
To put it another way, this means that garlic thins the blood. And adenosine isn't the only weapon in garlic's arsenal, says chemistry professor Dr. Eric Block of the Albany Medical College. By teaming adenosine with a chemical Dr. Block discovered called ajoene (which is what you'd call a medical marvel, because it also has antibiotic properties and promotes wound healing), garlic can give untimely blood clots a knock out punch.
Block says quite bluntly that "as an antithrombotic agent (clot buster), ajoene is at least as potent as aspirin." And aspirin has been recognized as one of the most effective anti-coagulants, or blood thinners, going. Blocks animal experiments show that a single dose of ajoene will shut down platelet aggregation (unwanted clotting) by 100 percent and keep it that way for 24 hours.
All of these researchers stress firmly that garlic has absolutely no side effects of any kind. The only risk you can possibly run as a consumer of garlic is that of offending your friends. And kyolic can eliminate that hazard if it concerns you.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the healing powers of garlic.

Lancet. 1983 Nov 5;2(8358):1055-8. Haematological and biochemical monitoring of Ebola infection in rhesus monkeys: implications for patient management.Fisher-Hoch SP, Platt GS, Lloyd G, Simpson DI, Neild GH, Barrett AJ. AbstractPatients with severe viral infections such as Lassa or Ebola may be denied adequate laboratory investigations because of justifiable fears among laboratory staff. This study in monkeys was designed to provide comprehensive haematological and biochemical monitoring in a contained environment during all stages of Ebola infection. Marked neutrophilia, depletion of lymphocytes, and early failure of platelet aggregation preceded a consumption coagulopathy with a microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and failure of prostacyclin production by vascular endothelium. Liver dysfunction was moderate but in conjunction with the dehydration and hypoalbuminaemia could be expected to precipitate renal failure and shock. It seems reasonable to anticipate successful patient support with a patient management isolator and treatment with platelet transfusions, fresh frozen plasma, and possibly prostacyclin when haemostasis is defective during this otherwise self-limiting illness. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6138602

J Infect Dis. 1985 Nov;152(5):887-94. Pathophysiology of shock and hemorrhage in a fulminating viral infection (Ebola).Fisher-Hoch SP, Platt GS, Neild GH, Southee T, Baskerville A, Raymond RT, Lloyd G, Simpson DI. AbstractEleven rhesus monkeys were monitored intensively during experimental infection with Ebola virus. Prominent neutrophilia with left shift and lymphopenia were the earliest abnormalities and were statistically significant by day 4 (P less than .02 and P less than .01, respectively). By day 4 falls in platelet counts were not statistically significant, whereas in vitro platelet aggregation was markedly depressed, progressing rapidly to complete failure by the time of maximum illness. Intraplatelet protein studies suggested this event was the result of in vivo activation and degranulation. Coagulation cascade defects were mainly in the intrinsic system and were surprisingly mild, with no evidence of selective consumption or production deficit of factor VII or VIII. When the possibility of indirectly mediated damage to endothelium possibly by a nonspecific immune response was examined, weight loss was less severe in drug-treated monkeys, and all had detectable plasma prostacyclin metabolites, but there was no improvement in survival. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4045253

Bioterrorism & Biodefense
[size0]The Role of Platelets in Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers Dermot Cox, Maria S Salvato and Juan Carlos Zapata Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Ireland Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, 21201, USAAbstractArenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Filoviridae and Flaviviridae are all RNA viruses that can induce a coagulopathy in infected patients. While there is a paucity of information on the cause of this coagulopathy, these viruses all produce a severe thrombocytopenia. Here, we review the literature on viral hemorrhagic fever and discuss the role played by platelets in the coagulopathy. We also discuss the possibility of using anti-platelet agents to moderate the coagulopathy, a strategy that might have a role to play in treating patients infected by these viruses. Keywords: Platelets; Arenaviridae; Bunyaviridae; Filoviridae; Flaviviridae; Dengue; Viral hemorrhagic fever; Disseminated intravascular coagulation; Anti-platelet agents; Biodefence Hemorrhagic Fever VirusesViral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) are a group of illnesses that are characterized by a loss of homeostasis leading to increased bleeding and shock. VHFs are caused by enveloped RNA viruses from four different families Arenaviridae, Bunyaviridae, Filoviridae, and Flaviviridae [1]. The bleeding signs of VHF are more frequently associated with Marburg and Ebola (Filoviruses), Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (Bunyavirus), and South American hemorrhagic fever (Arenaviruses), but less frequently associated with Dengue and Yellow Fever (Flaviviruses), Rift Valley Fever (Bunyavirus) or Lassa fever (Arenavirus) [2]. A common characteristic of all hemorrhagic fever viruses is that they infect vascular endothelial cells and diminish platelet numbers or function. However, these viruses differ greatly in their replication strategies, extent of cytopathic effects, and extent of immunopathology [3]. Here, we review information on the effects of VHF on platelet functions, with emphasis on dengue hemorrhagic fever pathogenesis. Biothreat of Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHF)VHFs have a number of properties that make them potential bioweapons, whereas the arenaviruses and filoviruses are aerosolizable; such high doses are needed for infection that they are unlikely to be transmitted that way. Outbreaks of VHF generally center on bleeding patients, as a source of nosocomial infection for health care personnel. Also, the effects of VHF can be sufficiently dramatic to instill terror in a civilian population. Even if many of these diseases can be medically managed, this often requires treatment in ICU units. Thus, even if only a small number of patients develop the disease, as a result of an attack the image of infected patients bleeding from several orifices, the risk of spread of infection from blood and the pressure placed on ICU resources would all serve to terrorize a civilian population. One of the biggest problems in dealing with a VHF outbreak due to a bioterrorist attack is the ability to identify the causative agent. Outbreaks occurring in their endemic regions are easier to identify than those occurring in new regions. Thus, a patient presenting with hemorrhagic fever in Malaysia is most likely to have dengue fever, while in Eastern Europe, it would be CCHF. Doctors are aware of these endemic diseases and look out for them in patients. If there were an imported case or a covert release of a VHF agent in a US city, it would take doctors a long time to appreciate that the patients had VHF, as they would not have any of the typical risk factors. Furthermore, it would be very difficult to identify the causative agent, as most VHFs have similar presentations. Even if there were anti-viral agents available, they would be unlikely to be effective against all agents, as the viruses are from different families. However, a common factor with all of these viruses is their ability to evade the innate immune system and compromise platelet function. Thus, platelets are a potential drug target in the treatment of VHFs. Therefore, the study of the role of platelets in the VHF pathogenesis may lead to the identification of new drug targets that will not only inhibit viral replication, but will also improve the antiviral immune response, preventing the onset of the hemorrhagic disease. While targeting the platelet may not inhibit viral replication, it may provide time for the immune system to clear the virus, and thereby, preventing the onset of hemorrhagic fever. http://epubs.rcsi.ie/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1068&context=mctart
A pdf, can print or save. A pain to copy and paste from because must format line after line after line.
So, herein lies the problem. Platelet aggregation/degradation. I fear that with the garlic treatment, it would only hasten the process. The only possible exception is that it might work by the homeopathy theory:
- Quote:
-
Homeopathy is a theory of alternative medicine which tries to treat illnesses with infinitesimal doses of the drugs that cause the same symptom as the illness. Homeopathy is based on the ideas of Samuel Hahnemann, a 19th century physician who observed that some contemporary medicines evoked symptoms similar to those of the illnesses for which they were prescribed. Homeopathy is popular in Europe and has been used by the British Royal Family. Critics claim there is no clear evidence to support the efficacy of homeopathic remedies.[1] They further argue that the reported effects are equivalent to placebo.[2] A group of studies examined by the National Center for Biotechnology Information and U.S. National Library of Medicine found that homeopathic treatments had weak evidence of efficacy and that they were likely a result of the placebo effect. [3] Critics say that homeopathic beliefs have no standard theory; practitioners vary widely in their prescriptions. http://www.conservapedia.com/Homeopathy

It's not that old, and not that sure I'm afraid, although there may be some merit in it.

Was hoping to find anecdotal support. Nothing like that yet but many, many references to garlic and ebola, mostly recommending garlic.

The above is apparently published from and for Sierra Leon and every answer is to get to the clinic. There's even a hotline to report suspected cases:

In his book, he also recounts how he was left dumbfounded by former South African president Thabo Mbeki, who blamed the Aids crisis on Western pharmaceutical companies poisoning Africans. Mr Mbeki was persuaded by his health minister that Aids could be cured with garlic, beetroot and lemon juice.
EBOLA:- There have been about 1,850 cases of the Ebola virus since it was discovered in 1976- More than 1,200 people have died from the Ebola virus- Ebola symptoms include a sudden fever, muscle pain, headache and a sore throat. This is often followed by vomiting, diarrhoea and internal and external bleeding- The Ebola virus is transmitted by direct contact with blood and body fluids of an infected person- It is often passed during burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased- Earlier this month, Canadian scientists said they had successfully cured monkeys infected with the Ebola virus through a cocktail of drugs. Trials on humans will begin before the end of 2014 Sources: World Health Organization, UNAIDS

Ebola is spread directly, human-to-human, by secretions such as saliva and sweat, but also by blood and feces. It can be spread directly by a break in the skin or mucous membranes or indirectly after touching your nose, mouth or eyes after having contact with the virus. It is not transmitted by coughing or sneezing (droplet spread), as would be the case for someone with influenza or measles.
Ebola virus, a member of the family of filoviruses, is one of the most deadly viruses known to man, owing to its ability to constantly undergo changes or mutations in its viral proteins. Symptoms begin suddenly–often with an intense headache and fatigue, sore throat and chills–followed by vomiting, and diarrhea with onset of a hemorrhagic rash in the upper roof of the mouth and the skin that appears to be blister-like. The virus attacks the immune system, releasing inflammatory mediators, which lead to collapse of the coagulation pathway, ending in massive external and internal bleeding.
