Most commonly used natural remedies for Crohn's and colitis include vitamin and mineral supplements; herbs; prebiotics; probiotics; omega 3 fatty acids; garlic; ginger; peppermint.

Crohn's disease is typically experienced as flair-up, with attacks occurring every few months to every few years. Over time, if the disease is active, bowel function can gradually deteriorate, with the risk of cancer increasing by 20-fold.

Scientists believe that chronic imbalances in the intestinal flora set off a chain of events that, in the end, damages the intestinal mucosa. This theory is strongly supported by the parallel in the number of cases of Crohn's and other inflammatory bowel disorders and use of antibiotics over the last 50 years. In turn, it has also been found that the incidence of Crohn's disease is higher in cultures consuming a "western diet", while it is virtually non-existent in cultures consuming a more primitive diet.

Studies also reveal that patients with Crohn's disease were found to be individuals who habitually ate, prior to the onset of symptoms, more refined sugar, less raw fruits, vegetables and dietary fiber when compared to their healthy counterparts.

Some of the recommendations from the above website:

Quote:

  • Avoid sugar, both white sugars and the sugars contained in white flour, white rice etc.
  • Keep a food/flair-up journal. Identify foods you are eating, or your emotional state just before and during a "flair-up". In time, you may find a pattern forming.
  • To reduce intestinal inflammation and begin the healing process, try products such as Intestinal Sooth & Build, CLT-X, marshmallow root, slippery elm, aloe vera juice or "Robert's Formula".
  • Flax seed oil and omega 3 oil are known to greatly reduce inflammation. If you find you have a hard time digesting it, try freezing the gel caps before taking them.

Just going to separate these from those (for focus purposes):

  • Extra vitamins and minerals are important at this time, especially if you are not absorbing nutrients correctly. Incorporate a liquid meal replacement, one that is loaded with vitamins, minerals and protein, and low in sugar, into your diet as well as taking a high quality vitamin and mineral supplement.
  • Find a good mineral supplement such as alfalfa, barley greens, liquid chlorophyll, noni juice or colloidal minerals. Many of these come in a powdered form that you can mix with water or juice.
  • Because of blood loss due to rectal bleeding and the anemia associated with it, incorporation of additional iron is important. Look to find an herbal iron alternative, especially one that comes in liquid form for better/easier assimilation. If you decide to look to a single herb, yellow dock would be a good choice. A combination such as I-X is another excellent source of iron. (Consult with your health care provider before introducing additional iron into your diet.)
  • Starting a program of re-inoculating the intestinal tract with friendly bacteria, such as acidophilus, can enhance recovery and restore bowel function to normal.

I was curious about "Robert's Formula". It was just recently I posted about Herb Robert but except for the namesake "Robert's Formula" there's no relation. There is no Herb Robert in Robert's Formula.

Robert's formula usually consists of cabbage leaf, geranium, marshmallow, slippery elm, echinacea and goldenseal. It sometimes contains bismuth, which kills H. Pylori, usually found in upper GI ulceration, as well as other microorganisms. Although never fully studied in placebo-controlled trials, Robert's Formula has long been favored by naturopaths treating suspected inflammation in the GI tract. A typical dose is at least one capsule tid between meals.

Robert's formula is becoming harder to find unless one goes to a liquid formula. Gaia Herbs has a preparation labeled Roberts Formula in a 4 oz size from their Supreme Compounds series. This is available through various outlets.

Robert's Formula can help with the following:

Autoimmune Ulcerative Colitis
See the link between Ulcerative colitis and Slippery Elm.

Crohn's Disease
See the link between Crohn's and Slippery Elm.

Digestion
Gastritis
See the link between Gastritis and Slippery Elm.

Gastric/Peptic Ulcers
Robert's Formula is a time-honored herbal preparation for upper GI inflammation. It sometimes contains bismuth, which kills H. Pylori, usually found in upper GI ulceration, as well as other microorganisms.

Infections
Dysbiosis, Bacterial
If inflammation is present from this over-population of harmful bacteria, the regular use of Robert's Formula may help soothe the intestinal lining, and reduce pain.

One herbal combination with a long history of curing ulcers is Robert's Formula. Not much is known about Robert. He was probably a physician, but legend has it that he was a sailor who suffered from severe stomach ulcers. Robert tried various herbs to cure his ulcers. Some had minor effect; others didn't work at all. Every time he visited a new port, he added a new plant to his formula. The final concoction healed his ulcer. There have been some revisions to the formula since Robert's time, but it is basically the same. Some of its main ingredients aremarshmallow, slippery elm and dried cabbage powder, with echinacea and baptisia to help enhance immunity and fight infection.

I found it very interesting at the above site, that raw cabbage juice can help heal peptic/stomach ulcers in 10 days.

From the same site (luckinlove.com) I liked this suggestion, though raw cabbage juice would probably go down easier and be soothing:

  • Raw cabbage juice: 1 quart daily in divided doses. Continue for two weeks. I would put one clove of garlic thru the juicer with it as garlic kills all bacteria. And one inch of aloe vera leaf.

Echinacea and goldenseal may help to speed this process along. These two immune system boosters are often packaged together in capsule form. You may also find Echinacea and goldenseal in combination with slippery elm, marshmallow, geranium, and other herbs. This combination goes by the generic name of Roberts Formula, and is made by a number of manufacturers. Roberts formula treats the digestive tract by creating a beneficial layer of slime that is healing to digestive tissues. Check your local health food store.

Echinacea and goldenseal are important healers because they have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. One cautionary note, however: Dont take these herbs continuously. Generally, two weeks on and two weeks off for a period of up to two months.
