This is one of several herbs that I ran across and studied while investigating Woden's Nine Herbs Charm that aren't related the charm, but were interesting enough to feature. There are yucca's out in the front yard, and after learning about it, I went out with my little shovel, talked to the plant and told it I needed some of it's roots for healing medicine, and I thanked it and said words of love and gratitude. I dug in a bit then I heard *snap* and the coolest piece of root, about 3 1/2 to 4 inches came up. It looked like a person, it had red lips and side shoots looked like limbs, arms. I wanted to take a picture to share but I never did.

I grated it with a small grater, like you'd use to grate lime or lemon peels and I made a decoction. I started feeling it very quickly inside my body, a chemical change that felt natural and positive.

Keith Johnson, MD, editor of 'Turn Back the Clock' newsletter, states, 'Adding the yucca plant to your diet will act as a natural cortisone, and will wash out the harmful poisons that cause arthritis.'

According to the late Robert Bingham, MD, director of the Desert Hot Springs Medical Clinic in Palm Springs, CA, yucca extract supplements can produce arthritis remissions. He supervised the use of yucca in thousands of patients. He told reporters, 'We have known for several years that a food supplement extracted from yucca acts like a natural form of cortisone, to reduce and eliminate the pain, swelling and joint stiffness suffered by arthritis victims.'

Bingham goes on to explain, 'Toxic substances or harmful bacteria, when absorbed into the system, create allergic responses - anything from migraine to arthritis. Consequently, an anti-stress agent such as yucca saponin might have the same beneficial effect on wastes in the body and be effective in treating arthritis by improving and protecting the intestinal flora, rather than any direct action upon arthritis.

'Strong evidence supports the theory that some forms of arthritis may be caused or worsened by toxic substances occurring in the intestines and absorbed by the body. Yucca seems to inhibit these harmful intestinal bacteria and at the same time help the natural and normal forms of bacteria found in the tract.'

Mary Clarke, Ph.D., of Kansas State University reports that saponins 'serve as natural antibiotics for the plant.' And now, 'scientists are looking at how they can help humans fight fungal infections, combat microbes and viruses, boost the effectiveness of certain vaccines, and knock out some kinds of tumor cells, particulary lung and blood cancers. They can also lower blood cholesterol thereby reducing heart disease.

Did you know that a substance found in fresh flowers from the yucca plant combats some strains of melanoma in test tube studies and in mice? Although the effectiveness of yucca with human melanoma has yet to be proven, this often overlooked ornamental shrub is medicinally useful in a number of ways.

Yucca Soap

Boil 1/2 to 1 cup (125 to 250 mL) chopped fresh or dried root in 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) water until suds form. Lather and rinse.

Yucca Magic

According to Scott Cunningham in his book, Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Llewellyn, 2000), a cross of yucca fibres twisted together and placed on the hearth will protect the house from evil. First Nations of the American Southwest, for whom the yucca is a highly functional plant, have their own magical legends. A small wreath of yucca fibres on a person’s head will enable the wearer to assume any form desired. Jumping through a hoop of yucca fibres will transform the person into an animal.
