She has been growing up in a very sheltered world, mostly kept from the outside, and especially since her brother took over the Barony of Athenry when she was around eight. Everyone always treated her with love, honesty and respect, so the concept of this being only show is hard for her to grasp. She always sees the good in everyone first, unless almost brutally proven wrong – and even then she will search for good excuses for their behaviour. She thinks herself a proper little lady, but hasn't had the chance to compare herself to 'real' english ladies yet – challenges that make her both excited and a little anxious. Ever since coming back from London, her brother Meiler has been telling her about the wonders of the English Court, how it is the center of sophistication, breeding and culture and ever since then she has been dreaming to one day be part of it, find her place there and maybe someone special who might make her his wife and therefore an English Lady proper. That marriage is all about politics hasn't come through to her mind as of yet, as cluttered by romance novels and Irish tales of old as it is – reading and hearing those being her favourite pastime, along with dancing and drawing. <p> At the same time though, she doesn't share her brother's contempt for everything Irish and remembers the time fondly when she still was allowed to keep the company of all those Irish clan people around, especially those of Clan Burke who were dominant in the parts around Athenry. But, being a good and well-bred young lady, she accepted this turn of her life, even though she often felt lonely in Athenry Castle, without any female friends, and only her brother and her nurse to keep her company, apart from servants of course, teaching her everything a lady should know. This is another reason why she does look forward so much to coming to court. In her blissful naivety and excitement she is firmly convinced that she will make many friends there and finally have the sort of girl-talk she lacked her whole life. <p> That this naivety makes her an easy target to be exploited needn't be spelled out, but as of yet she is happily unaware of the traps she might walk into with her large doe eyes wide open. She is intent on making her brother proud, also not realizing how he uses her as a tool for his own game of getting the Barony of Athenry to be of more significance than it is now. For now, Máire is convinced everything will go well, as she is an optimist at heart, that her life might not exactly be destined for greatness, but will be a happy one, if she only finds her rightful place in this new and exciting world. </div> <div class="connte"><table><td><div class="linee"></div></td><td><div class="hist">► history</div></td></table> Lady Máire de Bermingham of Athenry was born on May 7th 1493 on Athenry Castle close to the west coast of Ireland. Her father, Thomas III de Bermingham, had always had a fondness of the land he was living in. England was far away and many of the Anglo-Norman nobles who had conquered this land generations ago had accustomed well in it, adapted its traditions, married the clans' daughters, had children that were more Irish than English. In truth, Thomas himself had only set foot into England two times. Once to swear fealty to his lord as new Baron of Athenry and a second time to take home with him Joan Hylton, his wife and distant, distant relative from the English branch of the Birmingham line. His wife though had no love for that land she had been followed her husband into. She despised the irish natives, thought them and their traditions little above savages and in general couldn't deal with the quiet and secluded life in Athenry Castle, so far away from London. <p> Thus, any softness she had in her heart for her husband soon withered and she became melancholic and withdrawn, resulting in a long gap between their two children. Máire's conception was a mixture of a futile try to spark their relationship once more and a pure accident. Thus, Joan saw no reason why she should fight the depression that took over her after her girl's birth, after losing yet another fight with her husband who had insisted on yet another irish name for his child. Máire instead of Mary, like Joan had wanted. The depression turned into a fever merely months after, and tired of her life in the 'wilderness' with no option of betterment – you did not just seperate in their time as a good Catholic after all – she simply gave up. The care of Máire was, as it was custom, fully entrusted on her nurse. <p> Despite that non-too favourable start in life, Máire was a sunny, carefree child. Outwardly she was the spitting image of her mother, with her dark brown curls and her delicate face, but she lacked that sad look in her doe brown eyes, instead they would sparkle with curiosity and mirth. Her mouth seemed to be endlessy asking questions and she strived to make a friend of everyone, always happy to lend one of her tiny hands or appearing with a little token of her affection. The first shadow on her life only fell when her father died unexpectedly when she was only seven and her brother, Meiler seventeen. A long lonely winter and half of spring ensued when Meiler travelled to England to pay his respects to the lord of Ireland as the successor of his father as Baron of Athenry and when he finally returned, everything changed. Meiler seemed as if besotted by what he had witnessed and experienced at court and he claimed everything here only could pale in comparison. He forbade Máire most contact with the Irish inhabitants of Athenry and he slowly cut all ties to the clans around, insisting of only keeping true English company and striving to turn his sister into a proper lady so that one day she might be introduced to court. <p> As English company was hard to come by in this area of the island, life at Athenry Castle became even more secluded and Máire was left with her romance novels and her dreams of a bright future. She slowly turned from a girl into a young lady, getting proficient in ladylike skills as sewing, embroidery, dancing, drawing and even reading, though she certainly could not write. Her sanctuary from her loneliness became the valiant stories and knightly romances of the generations present and before, mixed with the Irish lore she had been taught before her father's death. <br> Then suddenly word reached Meiler from his sparsely knit contacts at court that Henry VII was dying and his son ready to ascend the throne. This was the chance he had been waiting for. Preparations were made and as soon as word was out that Henry VIII was inviting all his loyal subject to attend his coronation, Meiler and Máire set out for England. There, Máire knew, she should hope to gain a place as lady-in-waiting, perhaps catching the eye of a wealthy and influential young lord. Meiler was by no means satisfied with residing over a small barony at the edge of the crown's sphere of influence. He intended to use his sister's pretty face to assure Athenry would appear on people's mind again and that in time Ireland might return under the crown's dominion by more than mere name. <p> Blissfully unaware of her brother's plans, all Máire saw in this was the chance she had always been dreaming of: A life at the center of the world as it seemed, a life of friendship, excitement and maybe even romance. The court was were all those knights in her romance novels came from and went, where they fought for the attention and love of graceful ladies. And with a young king such as Henry, he would certainly draw all those young lords forward like Arthur had done in his time. Her life of seclusion was ending, now all the years of learning how to be a proper lady would surely, surely pay off! She simply couldn't wait to meet everyone! <p> Family:<br> Father: Thomas III de Bermingham, passed away in 1500<br> Mother: Joan de Bermingham, née Hylton, passed away in 1493<br> Brother: Meiler de Bermingham, 26, Baron of Athenry<br> 1st Cousin: Sir William Hylton, de jure 8th Baron of Hylton<br> </div> <div class="connte"><table><td><div class="linee"></div></td><td><div class="appear">► appearance</div></td></table> Máire has inherited her looks almost wholly from her mother, the late Joan de Bermingham: long thick brown hair that falls in gente locks down to her waist, an angular face that still holds the softness of youth and large brown doe eyes. Her nose might be a little bigger than she likes it, but all in all, she thinks she can be happy with how she looks. Still on the verge to blossom fully into womanhood, her figure is slight and a bit on the smaller side, reaching 5'3 at most. Intent on making the best impression at court and aided by her brother's money, she is dressed in the latest court fashion, her favourite colours certainly being bronze, golden yellow, a warm brown and creme, as they go well with her hair and overall appearance. Her hair she keeps in subtle but still fancy hairdos, often adorned by pearls, but mostly open to show her status of maidenhood. She tries to keep her hands clean at all time, but sometimes you still can find tiny specks of charcoal she uses to draw and sketch with or parchment dust on her fingers from reading one of her beloved romances. Around her neck she almost always wears a golden cross on a pearl necklace, one of the few things she still has of her mother's. </div> <div class="pam">GWEN ▲ 26</div> <a href=http://z10.invisionfree.com/Shadowplay/index.php?showuser=7567">•••</a> </center> [/doHTML] |
