June 1509 Coronation Banquet The solemnity of the vows made at the coronation as well as the reverence felt as the new king was anointed with holy oil were quickly wiped away the moment the ceremony ended, at least for John. Now he had to vigorously be on the lookout for anyone that might want to ruin King Henry VIII's coronation day, or do something even worse by attempting to assassinate the new sovereign. Dudley's paranoia might be growing by the day, but John was willing to have his nerves fray and his eyes always darting about if it prevented calamity from falling upon His Grace and upon England. Nevertheless, it was with great pleasure when he turned over the bulk of his responsibility to one of the other knights of the body in order to eat. His comrade had been joking and laughing loudly as he supped on the divine smelling food and drank the heady rich wines while John's stomach grumbled and he estimated the intentions of the occupants of the room for what felt like the thousandth time. But now, with His Majesty within sight and an empty stomach to fill, Dudley could allow himself the slightest relaxation. The knight took a vacated seat among other courtiers, many of them strangers to him. But no matter -- perhaps today all would overlook the presence of a traitor's son in celebration of their new monarch. As his goblet was filled, John made a toast to his dining fellows. "To the great King Henry VIII's good health -- long may he reign!" |
