Swinging lightly in her plumb colored gown, Joyce's eyes excitedly followed the events of the day. England has crowed a new King and with it gained the promise of brighter days ahead - of prosperity and joy that would spread throughout the realm. New beginnings were magical indeed, because they brought with them a certain hope for the future and a fondness for the unknown. The coronation of King Henry was certainly the grandest event she had attended. Never in her life has she seen such beautiful gowns, garments and jewelry. It seemed that every lady at court was competing with one another in beauty and fashion. But the young King, of course, was dressed grandest of them all with jewels that made Joyce's head swirl. The Earl of Derby and the Duke of Buckingham opened the banquet with a show and a clever trick at the end. The Duke of Buckingham had somehow trained his stallion to bow in front of King Henry - which earned them an applause from both the court and His Majesty himself. After the banquet has commenced, the food was served and the guests seated. Joyce's eyes scanned the hall in search of her sister but she couldn't find her in the crowd. Having just arrived at court, he sixteen year old didn't have many acquaintances so instead of lingering around the hall, she took the seat that was assigned to her in silence. A servant girl promptly came and poured wine into her goblet as soon as she sat down. Joyce took a sip and tried to restrain herself from spitting it out, not being use to the strong taste of it. The ale she drank at her family estate had a much lighter and more pleasant taste. Hoping that her tongue would get familiar with it, she took another large sip of her wine |

Vivat Rex! The cry resounded at his coronation. England had a new king. Long live the king. Now, the celebrations would begin: feasts, banquets, all sorts of jubilation in honor of His Majesty. She dressed a bit more fancy than she was used to dressing, though this was the coronation, and she needed to look her best for her family. Even if her best meant trumping about like a trussed-up pheasant. What Lord Derby said made her smile, and the trick the Duke did with the horse was ever so delightful, and made her clap and laugh. Mary did love horses, and if ever there was a time she was so honored to speak to the Duke, she would love to ask him how he managed to teach his lovely steed such a trick. Now, she found herself here, seated next to Mistress Joyce. The Great Hall abounded with food, wine, laughter, and people dancing. Her young eyes even caught a few couples leaving the hall and she shook her head and smirked. "The wine must have gotten to them early," Mary muttered, and took a sip of her wine. She was rather used to the taste, but a quick glance at Joyce told her the other young woman wasn't quite used to the taste yet. "If you take small sips and let the taste linger on your tongue," she said, while leaning toward Joyce, "you will find yourself much more used to the taste. At least that is what helped me when I had my very first sips of English wine. Like so." Mary demonstrated with her own goblet of wine and raised her brows at her over the rim of her cup. "See? Easy enough." Her eyes glanced back out toward the people dancing. "Can't have too much wine, though...don't want to be taking my shoes and stockings off in front of all these people." |

Joyce listened carefully to Mary's tip and did as she was told. A small sip of wine swirled around her tongue as the taste slowly became familiar and she let it travel down her throat. This time, instead of an unpleasant reaction, she felt a soft tingling sensation. "Thank you. It truly makes a difference", she said gratefully with a smile. Now at least she could cross out spitting out the wine from her list of possible embarrassments at court. This rather long and thought out list included tripping and landing face first during a dance and falling so deep asleep during Sunday worship than she would start snoring in the middle of it. "I am certain that we have already proved the dangerous effects of wine on young minds such as ourselves", Joyce spoke as a soft laugh rolled down her lips. "Although I doubt we would be as bold this time around. Nature gives one a sense of freedom that a hall, even one as grand as this, could not replicate. Besides, I do not believe that the cold stone floor would be as pleasing to my bear feet as the soft grass was", she said in a softer tone to ensure that her words couldn't be overheard. After all, not everyone at court would see their little adventure as only the innocent fun of young girls. She was told than even the smallest of rumors could ruin a lady's reputation, and Joyce did not wish to gamble with her odds. "But I commend you, Mistress Mary, for suggesting such a bold idea. Not many would have the courage to do so", Joyce said offering her a genuine smile of admiration. Most ladies she had met at court were rather dull or terribly ignorant - there seemed to be nothing in between. Mary, on the other hand, seemed different. "Tell me, are you enjoying the festivities? For my sister had said that you have been at court for quite longer than we have, so you must be use to such grand decadence." |
