Virtue alone is invincible.

February, 1513 It was such a pleasure to be one's own mistress! As long as Isabel made a valiant effort to ensure that she was not in any way neglecting her husband or his wishes, she could do what she pleased with her days. If she cared to linger in the library, she could. If Isabel wished to spend the afternoon conjugating French verbs in effort to surprise the Earl of Bath that evening, she could -- and did. But one of the most simple pleasures she found was simply taking Jasper for a walk around the palace grounds. Winter's hold was still on London, and so these walks did not last long (Jasper did have very short legs, after all, and was easily tired), but they were still a pleasure. Watching Jasper attempt to bound through drifts of snow that were taller than he was one of the funniest things that Isabel had ever seen. The dog with the wild hair would think the snow solid, jump into it -- and disappear! Sometimes Isabel had to dig the poor creature out himself, only to have him shiver in her arms until they returned to their room and the poor hound was warmed before the fire. But today, Isabel would be diligent in their walk! And, since they would be confined to the base court, there would be little opportunity for the hairy puppy to bound into deep drifts of snow. Isabel was bundled up in a thick evergreen mantle, her red curls tucked beneath a warm woolen hat to keep her ears warm. Jasper pranced at her side, wearing that bell that Isabel thought prevented others from trodding upon him. His lead was in Isabel's gloved hand, and as they entered into the brisk air of the base court, the little puppy began hopping in excitement. "Yes, I know how you love your walks, Jasper." Isabel laughed to the puppy, ensuring the doors closed tightly behind them. Within a moment, Jasper had given a rather insistent tug on his lead, causing it to run in between Isabel's fingers and he was free, bounding across the expanse of the base court as though the devil himself were after him. Isabel's face stretched into an agape look of alarm, and the woman was off after the puppy, mantel billowing behind her. "Jasper! Come back here!" |
