Late February 1513 Lent was well under way now, and Jane was in the library reading quietly. The silence was rather calming and it seemed like there was nobody else within the room, with the exception of herself. She was perched on a chair with a French poetry book rested in her hand. Although she wasn't fluent in the language, she could still see the beauty in the verses through the few words she could understand. Soft footsteps outside the door drew her attention away from the text, but as they faded she focused again on the words. Jane sighed, now bored with her current book. She stood up and tucked the book away, glancing over the shelves and the covers of many different texts. Above her head, there was a book she found rather interesting. Biting her lip she reached upwards, standing on her tip-toes in an attempt to grab the book. Realizing it was futile, her eyes flickered around the room for something to help her coax the book far enough for her to get it. She huffed, coming up with nothing; if only she was a little bit taller! Giving up, she picked up the French poetry book again. The same one she'd just put away. Jane walked over to her vacant chair, crossing her legs at the ankles and flipping the book open. She was less interested now, and was only scanning the pages. More muffled footsteps drew her attention to the door, but as they faded again so did her interest. Outside, there were now low voices and Jane frowned in annoyance. She wished they would leave and continue their conversation elsewhere, somewhere where they wouldn't be disturbing her reading. But suddenly, the door creaked open and she stretched to catch a glimpse of the one who walked in. But too her surprise, it was actually two someones! "Oh, hello Jerome, Andrew!" She stood again, placing her book on top of the chair she was sitting in. |

Jerome was not happy. His brother was annoying him greatly, he had not been in a great mood to begin with, and constant wedding talk was driving him slowly insane. It was never a good mix to be disappointed with things in general and then to have a large, socially hideous flaw within yourself being continuously flung in your direction with a vehemence. It was confusing, also. He did not understand why Andrew was so keen that he have a marriage when he could have conceivably remained a bachelor for a while to come. The youngest Dudley had always supposed that he would have to go through with a sham marriage, try and find the woman he liked and admired the most, and try and convert that into love and sexual appetite, but he was not in the right place for it, “We can talk about this with mother. She’ll want a hand in it, and I dare say she won’t yours anywhere near the business” he sullenly said, as he went into the library. He had been giving sullen, short and altogether rather rude replies to the subject all day, and finding that it seemed Andrew was not likely to go away, had decided the library might be a good place to at the very least get rid of his incessant chatter. It would be far more difficult to pester him when others were reading, surely? And he had a mind to read himself. Study history or a new language perhaps, or merely establish himself with images and rhymes he had previously overlooked. Either study or creativity was a better thing to be immersed in than his brother. Yet he was surprised, horrified perhaps, that they had company in the form of Jane Guildford. Not that he disliked her at all. Indeed, he was very much of the opinion she was a lovely woman, and one he would normally have liked to speak with. But it seemed probable she would be asked about the topic of the day as a woman who might know other women who had perhaps indicated he would not make a bad husband. “Good afternoon Jane. You;ll excuse me, I hope, and will entertain my brother” he said calmly, shooting a look to his brother that he was not to be disturbed, and then taking himself off to a book case on the other side of the room. If they were to talk about him, he would rather not listen, and he imagined they’d find it both more interesting and easier if he was not there to fetter everything they wanted to say about him. |
