*Early-January 1513*

Andrew didn’t know what was wrong with him. He had survived so long without the influence of women or ale or wine, but yet even without the ale and wine he had wrongly kissed a woman who was differently not his betrothed or would ever be. He liked this woman though and he didn’t know why. He had tried to not think about her or that kiss, but it proved futile as not only was he reminded her during Christmas celebrations, but no matter how he tried to distract himself, she could not leave his mind.

He knew that because of who she was that he should leave at that and keep away from her, but he found himself looking for her in a crowded room to at least see that smile and the pure beauty she held. For Jane Seymour made life worthwhile and while he tried to ensure nothing came between them he knew that he wouldn’t be able to move on until he had seen her again. Perhaps they could simply be friends, he could keep her as a friend couldn’t he? But could he trust himself? He had made that mistake once before, but then last time he wasn’t entirely sober and now that he was he could make the right decisions and if something got out of hand he could salvage it to ensure their reputations weren’t ruined, especially and most importantly hers.

Andrew didn’t know what had brought him to Jane’s chambers, but he was standing out her door waiting to be announced. There would be enough people around to ensure they didn’t do anything right? But once he entered the room, there weren’t that many servants he would think there was going to be. When he found her sitting in her parlour, he bowed graciously. “Mistress Seymour…I apologise for not seeing you sooner, I have been preoccupied. But I wanted to sincerely apologise for my actions the last time we were together. It was wrong for me to take advantage of you like that and I ensure it will never happen again.” And then he looked up and saw her in all her beauty and he knew that it was going to be quite difficult in keeping his promise, quite difficult indeed.

Jane's small sitting room boasted a large window that was in the perfect position for the sunlight to shine directly through it in the early afternoon. It was usually at this time that she sat at her embroidery, for the intricate stitches needed a bright illumination that candles could not provide. Embroidery was one of the endeavors that kept her occupied during the winter months, as well as reading, painting, and spending time with friends and family. It was quite a calming and relaxing pursuit, which considering her recent restlessness, was something she appreciated.

There was no real reason for her restlessness, at least not that she could pinpoint. It just seemed to her that her existence was a little duller now, that the activities she had once enjoyed no longer pleased her as they once had. It was if the light had gone out of her life, and she could not explain the strange feelings that plagued her. Not even the Christmas celebrations had been as thrilling as they had been in years past and she had found herself turning down more dances than she had accepted. There had been one or two notable exceptions, but most of the time she had felt as if she were standing on the edge of a world that was going on without her.

Glancing up from her stitches, she gazed out the out at the falling snow. She had situated herself just out of the draft, and the fire blazing in the hearth kept the room relatively warm despite the cold air wafting in from the open window. Perhaps it was just the inability to spend time outdoors that annoyed her. She missed riding Calypso, taking walks around the gardens, and shopping at the markets. Occasionally she did venture outside, but it was so cold that she could not remain outdoors for long.

Sighing, Jane returned to her embroidery, allowing her thoughts to wander where they would. She had no idea how much time had passed when one of her maidservants came to the door and announced that she had a visitor. Expecting one of her siblings … for they were the only ones who ever came to her rooms uninvited … she did not ask for a name but simply told the woman to send her guest in. With any luck, it would be Elizabeth or Thomas. She did not really want to endure one of Edward's rather one-sided conversations, which usually only served to make her feel small, insignificant, and powerless. As much as she loved her eldest brother, she preferred to avoid him whenever possible.

Setting her embroidery on her lap, her eyes turned toward the door and when her visitor arrived, her eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat. Sir Andrew Dudley was the last person she would have expected to see, especially in her own chambers. In fact, he was the last person she would have expected to see at all, as she had promised herself that she would never speak to him again. She had not forgotten that day in the chapel with the puppy and she certainly remembered his kiss. That simple but forbidden gesture came back time and again to haunt her thoughts, and she had become quite adept at pushing such memories to the back of her mind. Yet seeing him again brought them all back, and she simply stared up at him, waiting for him to speak.

A soft blush touched her cheeks when he mentioned that he wished he could have seen her sooner. Jane should be appalled at the very notion, but instead she was pleased that he had not put her out of his mind. Her own feelings confused her and she had no idea what to make of them. What she did know was that she should tell him that he had no right to come to her room, that she never wanted to see him again, and that he should walk out of the door and out of her life forever.

Instead she smiled at him and the words that came from her mouth were not at all as she intended. “Please, there is no need to apologize. I stumbled into you with quite a bit of force; I think we were both shocked by the impact and by being yelled at by that priest. You probably had no idea what you were doing, and I cannot blame you for that.” And I liked it, she added silently to herself, surprised at her own thoughts. “I have no doubt that it will not happen again. I know you are an honorable man.”

Now was the time she should send him away, but she simply couldn't get her mouth to form the words. “So tell me, how is the puppy? I'll bet he has grown since I saw him last. Oh, and please sit down,” she added, waving at a nearby chair.
