Late January, 1513 When she received word that her friend, Sir John, was coming to Greys Court, her country estate where she and her little Penelope resided, she was inexplicably happy. Her mother and most of her sisters, save the youngest that served her here, lived in Lettice's Reading estate, closer to London and the bustling of the city. There was a time she thought to reside there, but with the birth of her daughter, she felt the quiet of the country was a better place to raise a child. Even though Oxfordshire was not the most beautiful at this time of year and the plants were dead in the gardens, she knew she made the right decision. Upon her arrival, she found the house and grounds were well-looked after, and Penelope was a happy, healthy four-month-old baby. She was very pleased with her progresses. The present John sent ahead also made himself right at home...the fuzzy little male Spaniel Lettice named Francis. He was a welcome addition to the large and cozy manor; since her friend was coming, there was another welcome addition. No matter how long he chose to stay. She spent the few days before his visit preparing. "I want for you to make sure rooms are ready for Sir John, and I want you to make sure his comforts are provided for...fresh linens, a bath, and the like." Her servants did her bidding, and by the day of his impending arrival, all she needed to do was wait in the receiving chambers. Lettice decided to wear a gown of green and the emerald necklace he gave to her before she left court. To pass the time, she had a book and was trying her best to muddle her way through it. She knew a little Latin, enough to understand the Holy Mass, but this was a challenge her preoccupied mind was not willing to undertake right now. "My lady Warrington, Sir John is here." A servant poked his head into the room. She blinked. The book, abandoned on top of the fireplace mantle for the time being, was forgotten. "Please, show him in. Oh, and tell Penelope's nursemaid to bring her down, so her godfather might see her." He bowed, and left the room. She patted her hair and wrung her hands together, then placed them on her stomach, then behind her back. Why was she so anticipative and nervous? It was someone she'd known for a long time, and there was no reason to be. |

The ride to Oxfordshire had passed admirably enough. Sir John never traveled alone as a man of certain rank, he always had others with him. That made the trip that much more amusing and leisurely, even in the cold. He found her estate quite pleasing when he arrived. Of course, he was partial to Wormleighton, but Sir John was a creature of habit. He preferred his routine and organization. It made him well-suited to his position. After dismounting his horse and coming into the house, he found it quite warm. It had a rather pleasant scent. With little more than a nod, he allowed the servants to precede him where he was going. He hoped that his visit pleased the lady. In due course, he was shown into the room where she was, and he immediately noticed her emerald green gown and the necklace she was wearing. His lips quirked as he offered a small bow. "My Lady Warringon," he greeted, "I see that you have enjoyed your gift, that pleases me, and how have you been keeping?" He put his hands behind his back, his deep navy doublet a fine compliment to her green gown. |

"Sir John." Lettice gave him a curtsy in return. Her eyes skirted over him...his stance, his gait, his choice in clothing. It was still strange to see him in garments other than the ones he wore for his position in the palace. "I do enjoy my gift, thank you. I have been keeping well, and you?" She walked over to the fireplace mantle and placed her hand atop it. "How...how was your journey here? Comfortable, I trust." God, why was she so nervous? This was a man she had known for some time. She closed her eyes and breathed in, slowly. "My lady Warrington?" A servant came in and bowed, followed by the nursemaid holding Penelope. "We bring your daughter, as you requested." Lettice looked to them, and smiled. "Most excellent. And you have things prepared, should our guest decide to stay?" The servant bowed. "Yes, everything is prepared." "We will take our meal in the dining area shortly." She thought nothing of taking charge and giving direction, for she had been doing so since she officially became head of Warrington at the age of eighteen. "Come," she motioned to the nursemaid. "You may go," she said to the servant, in absent dismissal, for she was more focused on her daughter. The servant bowed, and left, as the nursemaid came over, eyes down, to stand near her, thought not exactly by her. "May I present your goddaughter, Sir John, Penelope." She saw more of herself than her husband in her child; the only small remnant of William in her daughter was her eyes. She shared his dark brown eyes, and when she stared at her in utter contentment, she saw him, if for a few small moments. "Four months of age, and progressing well." This was the first time he had seen her since she was born, so it was fitting he saw her now. |

Did she sound nervous? Whyever would she sound nervous? Women were, indeed, strange things. Even stranger, this woman typically made more sense than most to John. Some would say he was lucky that he understood women better than many because of being so oft around them in his service to the queens and kings. It did not make him understand everything. Poets were the only ones who seemed to quite get that eccentricity that made women different than men. Sir John was no poet, but if he were, he would not have written poems about a topic like love. "Very well, indeed," he replied before she spoke to one of her servants, assuring that things were prepared. "I think that I shall, My Lady, as I thought that was the understanding." He smiled his crooked smile that quirked, reaching to his blue eyes. "It is, after all, no short ride and with the French gone, I have been relieved of those extra duties and my usual ones are easily covered with people pouring out of court instead of into it." John would not be gone from there long, but he would enjoy his time away. His eyes flickered across to the nursemaid who entered, carrying the baby. He tried to look before the girl came closer without seeming to have an undo amount of interest for a man, but his lips twitched with pleasure and then curved into a smile at the tiny form. Babies were fine enough when they were sleeping. "Like a fine porcelain doll," he observed, with a small huff of merriment. "And so content...and strong to have been so healthy. God does grant some blessings." He would think to hold her but was far too large for such a small thing, and it would be uncomfortable for him. A small baby girl was far too fragile for a man. When she was larger perhaps, when she could play little games. He had not oft gotten to do such things with his own children, but he had enjoyed it in its rarity. "I must rudely confess to being parched," he said, when he found his mouth a bit dry with what he had been going to say. "She resembles you and should then grow to be quite beautiful." Women liked such compliments. |

"Of course. But I do not know if your plans have changed." A small smile played at her lips. "And you best not be making mischief here. " She doubted he would, but being friends afforded her opportunities to tease him. It truly pleased her to see that he seemed...well, happy to see Penelope. "Yes, indeed. God does grant some blessings, and I am truly blessed to have my daughter." William's family had not tried to take her away from Lettice, and she was able to maintain control, for now, over her daughter. That was a blessing, but how long God continued to grant that blessing, she did not know. "I wasn't aware you were parched, so how is that rude, Sir John? If anything, I should be chastized for not offering you anything." After all, she was the hostess, was she not? "Wine," she smiled at a servant, while seating herself at a chair near the fire. "You may take Penelope and put her back to bed." The nursemaid nodded, and, once again, she was alone. Well, almost. "I must say, you do flatter me as well as your goddaughter. She is too little to understand compliments, so I shall take them in her stead, lest the Deadly Sin of superbia comes through at an early age." The wine was poured, and she was handed a goblet. "Thank you," she nodded to the servant, and waited till John had his wine before she continued talking. "So, I take it with the wine you will be less parched." The liquid passed through parted lips, and her brows raised. "Care to share your thoughts? Forgive me for asking, but you seem somewhat preoccupied." |
